So I was just reading an aritcle on CNN.com about how Americans are getting angry at Obama planning a speech telling kids to stay in school and that they will need an education to go anywhere in life. Am I missing something here?? Isn't that..a....goood thing??? How dare he try and tell kids to better themselves
the nerve!

haha. i have to agree. i think all this talk about obama is nonsense. after having bush for 8 ungodly years... how can we criticize obama for trying his best and for saying something like "hey kids, stay in school and you will do well in life" ??

i dont get it. people always want something to fight about and question.

Some people are flat out mean and no matter how hard "O" try he will be hated on.

But why, what is their argument, I still don't understand??? Why do they think he should not be saying this?

Because the children are theirs and they don't want them listening to Obama.

We really don't need anymore reason then that.

No, it was about the worksheet that they were gonna have the kids do. The assignment was that they had to write a letter to themselves and tell how they were gonna help the president.

ummm... the children are yours, yes. did you have no problem with bush passing the no child left behind act? and forcing every child to take some stupid test to see if your child was smart enough or dumb?

does no one have a problem with the fact that other presidents have done much worse than give a speach to your kids about staying in school?

maybe obama has to say it because to many irresponsible parents dont. there are a lot of little devils running around and they are not parented well enough. its kind of GOOD that they are getting a piece of advice from someone who is probably intimidating to them, ensuring they may be more likely to listen.

I could understand if obama said to your children "Hey guys, join the army its a lot of fun" but he didnt. he said "stay in school"

this is so stupid.

probably because, like all politicians, he is a dyed in the wool liar. it's in the job description. and evidently in the blood.

people are upset because in the privacy of your own home you have the ability to turn off the tv, or at least explain to the kids your take on the subject matter.

washington doesn't want to be forthcoming about anything, but it wants some alone time with your kid. sounds a little creepy from that perspective.

There you have it in a nutshell. An honest and concise response from jd140.

It wouldn't matter of Obama was reading a script prepared by the parents themselves, some people just hate Obama so much that it doesn't matter WHAT he says, they don't want their kids listening to him say it...

And that's their right. Thing is, people are letting their politics get in the way of having the most famous man on earth right now speak to their kids and tell them to do well in school. They're also teaching their kids that if you disagree with someone, you hide. You close your ears and close your mind and ignore those people with whom you disagree. And that, too, is their right.

Poor kids.

you cant mask your children from everything in life. they will still watch tv and learn about sex, drugs, and violence.

so why are you so concerned with obama saying something?

forgive me.. it is honestly the dumbest thing i have ever heard.

1. No one knew what the speech was going to be. So to say "All "O" was gonna do is tell kids to stay in school" is just speculation.

2. Some people (myself especially) do not see a need for any politician, or even a sitting President (regardless of party affiliation... and in some ways because of any party affiliation) to address my child, or anyone else's child. Period. No speech I've ever seen by a politician was agenda-less. Stop trying to use kids to get your point across.. or get your PR fix.. or whatever.

3. Shouldn't he have better things to do.. like keep some of the promises he made during the campaign? Like getting big business/lobbyists out of government? Or maybe getting some troops home? And when you get bored with that ... there's that whole economic mess hanging about...

etc.

Hope that clarifies things somewhat... lol I have my doubts

It is my opinion, after watching the country having convulsions since January (and before), that Obama's race has more to do with the vitriol being thrown at him than most people are willing to admit.

The reality is that Obama's policies and behavior are just not (so far at least) that much different than previous Presidents. Yet the massive amount of hysterical hatred continues.

People get themselves all tied in knots over things he isn't even planning to do.

Maybe parents don't want any President or politician talking to their children... OK, I can buy that. But never before has such an event created such furor.

Maybe some people don't like Obama's health care reform plans. OK. But again, when Clinton tried it in the '90s, the hysteria was nothing like it is now.

Hell, after watching the Bush administration in action, I have no use for that bunch... yet I can and do say "Good on you" to Bush for his African AIDS work... I have yet to hear anyone who opposes Obama say anything good about him. And like it or not, there are plenty of good things to say.

No, to me this kind of non-thinking hysterical hatred has one basis - race.

so who should address kids?

politicians corrupt them
actors corrupt them
musicians corrupt them
athletes corrupt them....

do you think teachers are any better?

I guess any knowledge or perspectives shown to kids corrupts them...unless of course it's out of a text book.

If I could give a speech to kids I'd tell them everything they need to know...
Finish school...if you want.
Don't knock up any dumb chicks or get knocked up by any dead beat losers....like your parents did.
Apply creativity to everything.

Done. Recipe for success.

Am I the only one who sees the bigger picture here....we're gonna fail as a society...
Becuz everyone is sooooooo dumb.

WTF?? Am I in bizzaro world??? Someone actually said doesn't he have better things to do??? NO!! he does not, one of his main priority should be to make sure the people of HIS country are educated and able to hold their own in the academic world. Am I the only one who does not have a ropblem with the leader of a country sending positive messages to kids?? Get over your own political opinions and put your childs future first. Crazy, this actually blows me away.

Anytime people's children gets involved, it becomes highly emotional. I'm honestly a little torn on this subject. Mainly because I feel that Obama has better things to do than talk to 5 year olds all day. Secondly, I don't think "any" politician has any business addressing anyone that's not even old enough to vote yet, nor will be even after the end of a second term if they get re-elected. I guess I can understand the fear of indoctrination since that seems to be what all politicians are about these days, and you can be damn sure that if I had a kid, I'd want to know what was being said. This brings me to the other side of it. I think it's absolutely ABHORRENT to simply dismiss what could be an otherwise positive message to young children about the values of hard work and fostering the desire for a more fulfilled life. I'd simply be one to find out what his speech was all about and THEN decide if it was appropriate for how I would wish to raise my child. Not doing so is just an obvious display of ignorance.

I was listening to the talk radio this morning the DJ was taking callers on this very issue...

One lady caller (Hard core Christian homeschool mom) was spouting verse and chapter how Obama was the antichrist and anything he said to our kids was poison... now this lady was livid and quite firm in her beliefs... don't know where its coming from but she was not the first person I've heard say stuff like this...
