Do you think passing an aptitude test should be required for ATS
membership?

Most people here including the mods should have to pass a field sobriety test.

Thank you mamabeth.

I've disregarded a few of these points just today. (and paid for it)

You are an eloquent and insightful addition to the fray. Thanks for sharing your observations.

It is a public forum so why should there be any kind of test?

Everyone should be able to freely express whatever is on their mind in whatever manner of language they are comfy with.

In other words, no one should need a PHD just to respond to a post. Not to mention some of the ones I know who have one are some of the most clueless people you would ever want to meet. But I do know a brilliant plumber who might be worth listening to even if he doesn't spell as good as some others.

I can't speak for the membership but many of the staff, myself included, wouldn't pass that test.

No aptitude test is needed. The only thing that one should do is read the T&C. Why? Because ATS is different than most internet sites. Courtesy is Mandatory.

Many come here unaware of this. Happens all the time. I don't know how many warns I racked up when I first got here. It can be a learning curve. There was a poster about a year ago and he came in the same way I did and once he got the "ATS way" he became an EXCELLENT member.

If you agree that aptitude does not imply formal education - I screen members with my own little test.

How do you feel about horoscopes?

Who shot JFK?

If they mistake JFK for the JR of other Dallas fame it's an automatic crash & burn.

Nope. Even ideas that the majority of us may think originate on the outer fringes of sanity can, on the odd day, lead to new enlightenment...

I have wondered, should passing an aptitude test be required for ATS
membership? I know several members would agree to a test in order
to screen applicants for membership. I have found, the highly educated
and superior thinking members on this board, have problems with members
who have had a mediocre education and questionable debating skills.

What you should take note of when asking this question is the correlation (positive or negative) between "flag" garnering and "highly educated superior thinking." By and large, the less "intellectual" contributors to the site are the more popular, and their threads tend to draw more post. ATS is not a website dedicated to providing high quality information, it is dedicated to providing entertainment and it just so happens that the format also attracts a respectable number of intelligent and educated contributors.

Just spend your time on the threads and contributors that you enjoy the most, and dont worry about what others on the site are or are not capable of. ATS needs that type of contributor, as the new flag system of recognition shows. It may not be your cup of tea, but it is what the bulk of the people here want.

The question I asked wasn't really a serious question.I knew the
answer would be no! I was just curious what others thought about
the question.
My favorite answer was the one about the sobriety test. This was the
type of answers I really expected.

Welcome to ATS, I'm glad your having fun here.

I was a lurker for a long time, finally decided to join because most of the people I meet aren't bothered in having an interesting discussion but will happily talk about celebs, drink and x factor etc.

I've started posting again recently, trying to contribute more to the community but its difficult to know where to start, so much of the information on here interests me.

You are right about the constant attacks on members with religious beliefs.
The problem is that everybody, who believes in God, is judged the same as somebody else doing bad things in God's name. That would be the approach taken by some of our less tolerant ATS members.

That was all I was doing my first couple of weeks here on ATS,defending
my faith.

First off welcome to another female member of ATS!

No ATS should never have an aptitude test for posters. I love the variety! It isnt hard to determine worthwhile posts from trash posts.

And we need lower denominators so we know how the sheeple REALLY think.

Another thing I want to say to all of us.
I often times look through threads, trying to decide which ones I
want to participate in.I have been surprised to find some postings
that contained very personal information.I read one that had a
phone number, another had someone's IP address.

I know it's in the rules, but we have to remember not to give so
much information about ourselves. Since this website,is global and
anyone with a computer can read what we write. We need to make
sure we don't get carried away and provide too much information.

Really like you'r post mamabeth.

Of coarse I don't believe there should be an entry exam. I believe all have something to bring to the table.

I will leave it at that as you'r OP said it all and will just take this time to say welcome and hope you enjoy the rest of you'r time here on ATS..

peace to you
