What is the point of believing in something ?

I am happy in my life, have ever been, and never felt the need to question my existence.

Live life & love life.

Robert Anton Wilson also called Carl Sagan a dogmatist. Keep that in mind. Also, I believe you have not looked deep enough. EVERYTHING we do is based off belief, no exceptions. We all have our reality tunnels that are mere models. They are not the territory. I think what should be said is, given a current belief, one should be willing to view the world with humility and honest truth-seeking with only the desire to see more of what is (keeping in mind that what you currently regard as what is happens to merely be a model), rather than to get a pat on the back from others (or simply relishing the idea of external affirmation). In the process, if you see something that transcends what you currently believe, you accept the transcendent idea. You then continue the process, having faith but also a teachable spirit that is willing to change. We have to have faith, but we must also be willing to move faiths, but only within the holistic and even more transcendent perspectives (We want to see more, not less).

I want to the same question except what would it take for you to believe? What amount of evidence do you need to beleive God is your creator? What amount of logic do you need to understand God is your creator?
what amount of brains do ya need?

Alright.

When it comes to religion, common sense is somehow not present in the debates. Logic is also missing.

Let's look at this in the most realistic & sensible way possible, okay?

Why should I believe in God? Because it'll make my life better? Because I'm lost without Your God? Why should I worship what you worship?

God is nothing but a myth. Your religious higher authority does not exist. Followers of organized religious institutions have it wrong. They are wrong. They follow something that does not exist.

Man was not made by god, but god was made by Man.

It's a myth. But people fail to see it or believe it because it gives them hope in life.

Is there a universal or scientific creator? Maybe. Is it a Christian or Muslim? No,

Santa is the imaginary friend for children and God is the imaginary friend for adults. It's sad and pathetic.

Old boy would get tired real fast of the "Why?" questions I threw at him. I might have a few suggestions to help make things better that could be frowned upon.

The thing is... it is the very same God that made us thinking beings. It is odd for God or Christians to frown upon questioning since God is the one who made us that way!

Like my sig says, "God loves honest atheist (or questioning people)" That is very apropos for this topic.

No you have taken my words out of context, no true Christain nor God will frown upon you for asking questions. Every question you ever had or could have is answered. It is in the Bible, you just have to be able to understand the Bible, in order to understand you must believe whith your whole heart then he will reveal to you the meaning. If you read the Bible today and I am talking about the Hebrew Greek King James version and it makes no sence to you what so ever then you are lost. No one can come to understand God without faith. God loves everyone even athiest he pines for non believers to come home to him. If you are honest or not is irrelevent. Satan is probably brutaly honest in his beliefs too. Think about it...

I tend to agree. People are fabricating a "God" that suits them. God basically becomes their special agent in the world, manipulating events to suit that person. They don't conceive of much, so the God they conceive of is nothing much. They forget that all would be important and interconnected in the eyes of a universal God.

Nevertheless, I see faith as cutting the cord of hope/fear. Faith is the direct path to something. It keeps one from flipping from hope fear ad nauseum. That being said, one must be open to something greater to replace the current ideal. Ideal is not a sufficient word, however, it would be more like a profound insight. But we can always go deeper, LOL. One must also learn to flow with in a continuum, rather than merely being an action or reaction.

What would it take for ME to believe in a God? Well I am going to tell you OP

Without saying what I believe.
Without insulting you or your beliefs.
Without attempting to change the subject.
Without using the cop out of "Finding out at Death".
Without saying there is NOTHING that will make me believe.

Buckle up, we are about to go for a ride.

1) Be able to tell me out loud exactly what I was thinking in my head.

2) Be able to tell me the exact recollection of events that happened to me at any part of my life.

3) Be able to do these things with other people being present and to also do these things to the people present as well.

3) Be able to defy the laws of Physics in front of me...such examples that I would be willing to accept are making fire burn in a controlled environment where no fuels exist. Turning Solid metals into liquids and gases.

4) Transport matter instantly from one spot to another, make matter completely disappear, duplicate matter, Create matter out of thin air.

5) Make an amputee's limb grow back. Make ALL amputee's on Earth limbs grow back at the same time.

6) Bring the dead back to life.

7) God cannot be able to be harmed by any means as far as projectiles, Chemicals, Temperature, Lack of oxygen, Starvation, Dehydration, Being Crushed by force or a weight, exposure to radiation, exposure to pressure, and any other way we could think of to injure God.

8) God must be able to rearrange the location of the planets and moons and even go so far as to be able to arrange the Stars in the Universe to form different images that are visible from Earth.

9) God must be able to make the Sun change orbit at will.

10) God must be able to Rapidly advance evolution in a species to the point of a new species OR show an example of Creation where a new species is created and make an effort to explain to our puny minds how it is done.

11) God must be able to answer ANY and ALL questions that we can pose to it regarding Science, Mathematics, History, Art, Music or any known or unknown events that have ever happened in history.

12) God must be able to accurately 100% of the time be able to flawlessly predict the future for any event.

ALL of these actions must be performed in front of as large of a team that we can possibly get together to monitor these events in as strictly of a controlled environment with the strongest amount of scrutiny that we can have.

Members of the team could include people from every field (Biology, Archeology, Physics, Astrophysics, Mathematics, Historians, Skeptics, Magicians, Chemists, a WIDE range of Medical Professionals, Military, Politics, Members of EVERY branch of EVERY religious institution and anyone else you could think of to help make sure the testing is as strict as possible).

Sorry but you are talking about the qualifying tests for the professional illusionist/ magician post...

but if you believe in Jesus, that is the main thing, and if you don't, OK.

1. How old is the human race?

2. How many human civilizations?

3. How many deities?

Answers:

1. Aprox 6000 years old, due to the pegan catholic calander we use now it is impossible to calculate exactly becouse the time God created in the begining has been twisted and preverted.

2. How many human civilazations? Hundreds and they have all collapsed due to heathen beliefs.

3. How many diety's? Too many to count but there is One God.

Well I will be willing to accept that statement as long as you are willing to explain what you believe or what type and amount of evidence would be sufficient for you to consider or call a being a God.

This may have already been asked, but if there is only one true god why are there so many religions that claim to be the one true religion? why are there so many false profits and how would an person on the planet know which is the real Slim Shady? For me it is LOGIC that tells me there is no god. in the original post you said logic tells you there is a god. it is not logical to say that some magical man who lives in the clouds, and has never been seen by a sane person created the universe and everything in it. I could go on for hours about contradictions in every part of the bible and how it actually was about things of the time. But that will never change anyone’s mind, because you believe what you want to. Brainwashed or not.

LOL. If you really say so. Everyone thinks their religion is better than everyone else's. Religious institutions are highly flawed and full of severe corruption. Instead of having a close mind, open yours up and accept the fact that it's an open universe out there.

Religion is for the people who can't grow up.

Oh dear, I feel likeI am banging my head against a brick wall. Because the devil is the ruler of our current world he has penetrated the church and likes to keep us fighting over who is right because as long as we are fighting then he can go on about his business and distract people from God. All non believers have been had, it is a mater plan devised by a master manipulator and it is working. Aliens, the big bang, evolution, it is all to keep you away from God, and guess what you are all being had... If you study and comprehend the Bible then you will know exactly who the real "slim shady" is. I have the time for you to throw your contradictions out, I gladly accept your challenge. And LOL... LOL... LOL... Brainwashed? That is satans specialty watched any TV lately? It is non believers that are brainwashed and the sad thing is they are desperate to prove that have not been manipulated and they use the same tools Satan used to brainwash them to begin with. If you could only see it from the other side...

I don't usually like to delve in to religious threads. But from my experience, It really takes quite literally a Leap of Faith to Truly believe in God. To do such can be a very difficult step. (One I personally am having trouble making)

To make this step it almost seems as if you have to deny logic, you have to take on the aspect that your knowledge is indefinitely inferior to that of God.
For this reason, is why you have so many of the population on this particular website that doesn't believe in God. They have delved so far into logic that they are under the impression that they can figure everything out for THEMSELVES. To the extent that they know better than God.

The worst part is, it's nearly impossible to have true faith in God and an Open mind. I know, because I tried myself. I have gone from an absolute faith in God to someone who takes largely part in philosophy and logical thinking and open-mindedness. Somewhere along the lines I lost that faith. I personally haven't been able to return to that faith for reasons stated above.

In the end, you won't truly know true faith in God until you experience it yourself. Which is why many on this site can't accept it because from my experience, You can't get it without submitting your entire mind to faith in God and the Idea that it is not YOU in charge, it is God. A most difficult step and a very uncomfortable idea if you ask me, and especially for the people on this site.

I personally do not believe in any of the Gods theorized in modern religion. nothing you say will change my mind. since you are Christian what would you say to those who follow Buda, or those who are Hindu, are they wrong because you are right?
