Though one might think otherwise, the law in not applied equally in all instances. Those in power do not share the belief that "all men are created equal". Powerful people expect, and usually get preferential treatment. The travesty in this case is that the LEO's conducted the check from a traceable source.

Has anyone wondered if the fact they might have found anything, although i think its unlikely... IF they did they wouldn't want them speaking about it...

Maybe he has a parking ticket he forgot to pay lol, nothing major but still a degree of embarrassment might come of it...

We don't know why the officers where searching thru the database... I suspect it has more too do with Obama's recent run in with the cambridge PD... and these officers felt that they had to see if there was dirt on obama.... i seriously doubt it had anything to do with "protect and serve" And i agree its an abuse of power on there part and a bit of stupidity as it is obvious that obama's information is being monitored.....

Unless they have a valid reason to suspect someone of a crime then a criminal background check cannot be done without written permission.

Like if you are registering a pistol. A criminal background check must be done and you have to give written permission.

Actually they did have a reason to run it.

Anytime you take a paid federal or state position within the US you can have a background check run on you anytime someone feels it's necessary. That is the law. I've had over 30 background checks done on me that I know about while working for both federal and state govt.'s so I can hardly see why this is even an issue at this point.

The reason for the charges is because like another poster said they were stupid and did it in a car. In the vehicle it would be considered a misuse of time and state facilities because your suppose to be patrolling in the car not running random background checks.

But in the end is stupid and will put egg on the face of the secret service and chances are raise more questions whether the officers found anything or not.

Every time we get stopped by the police they run a background check. Its called an NCIC.

THEY DO! Every FREAKING day!!! When they're at a stop light, they run a tag - from the tag they run the registrant. They're looking for warrants and such. What fantasy village do you live in!?!? It's been done this way since computers were introduced into police cars.

So, as others have stated... it certainly doesn't warrant suspension. What!?!?! The President is now somehow not subject to the laws of the land or scrutiny by its enforcement officers??? I don't recall Bush's criminal record or background being so forbidden!

It's not like an attempt was made on his life, or that one was even being planned. FYI - the info in the police database is a matter of PUBLIC RECORD. You could request it, pay the processing fee and get it yourself. So, this is rather peculiar. Barry is certainly hiding something. I just can't wait for the day when it leaks out - and it will!

Oh, gosh. I had a background check on my perpetrated by my girlfriend's family, done by a family cop. Results? Nothing. Was I pissed off?Yeah. Especially because I was innocent of any wrong doing, but just being checked on. I would expect the same reaction from Obama, what? I haven't done anything wrong in my life, what are you doing? now I think, yeah, I don't blame the family for checking on me, after all, My girl's parents wanted to know just who is this guy that calls and comes to see her. My understanding is that background checks and credit checks have to be authorized by the person being checked out. In otherwords when you sign a credit card application you are authorizing the credit company to conduct said search. When you apply for a job requiring a background check you provide written authorization to do so. When you have medical data at your doctors office you sign a release form under the HIPPO act to authorize who can have access to your medical records. In America your private data is just this unless warranted under certain conditions.

Lets see,these officers decided to look at the presidents criminal back round,hmmm I see no problem with it,unless they have ulterior motives.In the UK,they have a camera for every citizen,so in the UK, it is even worse then America.Who needs a back round check,when they can see everything you do,everywhere you go,all the TIME. And yes,in America or anywhere for that matter,for a price,or sometimes free,you can find out the criminal back round of many people.No harm,no foul......

Being placed on leave,until they can find out if these two officers were up to no good,or if they broke some sort of department policy is not a problem.Hopefully they will go back to work,a little wiser from the experience.....

Police officers are not supposed to run background checks in such manners as they did...needs to be a "reason", such as arresting someone.

Now, it said the secret service was notified.

Not like it isn't obvious, but the second they ran his name, more than likely they got an alert message.

The cops broke protocol, which normally should result in being fired or suspension...BUT!!!! I wonder if they ran some average joe, if they would get the same consequences as being discussed here...THAT is the question, and THAT should determine their punishment.

The officers should get an award!

There are many reasons for running a background check on Obama.

-The biggest reason is that he has not provided information on himself but rather denied it to the American people to the extent of hiring a long list and spending untold thousands on lawers to deny the American people information on his past.

-His dubious past associations including Bill Ahers and an incredibly long list of others criminals and anti American activists.

-Obama has never held a significant paying job. He has little history of past employment yet money has never been a problem with Obama. Where did it come from? Drugs? Bribery? Unions? Treason? Payoffs? Compromise? What is not to doubt about Obama?
