Well said my friend.

I wonder how many people stop on the 4th to recognize the Native Americans we slaughtered in order to live on this great land.
Most people believe that Christopher Columbus sailed her, shook hands with the Indians, they taught him how to grow corn, taught us a new holiday called Thanksgiving, and we all lived happily ever after.

It is a very uncomfortable topic which people tend to shy away from because it somehow makes us feel guilty for living here.

I still would be interested to hear from you all on wheather or not your family knows why we celebrate the 4th.

Some of my deceased relatives were Native Americans although it took my Mother quite a lot to get that out of my Fathers side of the Family!

I live in England now and have English children but still consider myself American. (I was born there.)

I am trying to teach my kids the American history that is not taught in school books, they hardly ever mention slaughter of Native Americans and to be honest most of what they thought they knew did not come from the British school system but from Family Guy and American Dad!!!!

I would give your wife the benefit of the doubt, could have been one of those bad brain days. My wife had one of those many years ago that I still get a good laugh at.

One night me and my wife was sitting on our back deck enjoying a cigarette. It was a cool brisk fall night with a full Moon and those high wispy clouds that you can still see the Moon through clearly. My wife looked at me and asked "Are those clouds behind the Moon"?

I laughed so hard and she is a very intelligent woman. Happens to the best of us.

That's all good and fine but she hasn't worked in 3 days and she still doesn't know the answer to my question. Why do we celebrate the 4th of July? I will give her another day of R&R and maybe tomorrow she'll know.

Not knowing something is one thing, making exuses such as " I'm tired, had a long day at work" etc, doesn't fly with me.

You can catch me on my most tired and worn out day, after working a 60 hr week and I will still be able to tell you why we celebrate the 4th.
Those B.S. exuses don't cut it. If you don't know, then you don't know, PERIOD. What makes it worse is the B.S. exuses that people offer.

Anyway, I would still like to know if she's the only one.

Honestly it sounds like your wife was pulling your leg.
I do that to my husband all the time.

Here is the question most people can't answer, why did the founding fathers decide we need Independence?

Well aren't you special.

Your statement is extremely patronizing.

Funny how men can exhibit their knowledge and intelligence, yet they can't go to the doctor or ask for directions.

First off, one personal expreience is only and exception to the rule, it doesn't make the rule.

People have different kinds of intelligence and memory. Especially working as a nurse, she is working her brain extensively all the time. The brain is a muscle, it gets tired.

Women are also prone to more hormones, which messes with cognitive ability. They are also prone to low iron, which messes with cognitive ability.

Now let me ask you this, do you work your week and come home and do nothing? Or does she have 2 full time jobs, working as a nurse and taking care of the home? Easy to say you shouldn't get tired when your work is done after 8 hours.

LOL, And yours exhibits classical stereotyping and broad, sweeping generalizations.WOW!

FYI I was in sales covering my entire state and did not have the luxury of GPS. If I had a hang-up with humbling myself and asking for directions me thinks I would still be on the road wandering aimlessly.

Now back on topic.

I personally can answer ANY question that I know the answer to at ANY time of day or night, weather fully awake, falling asleep, just waking up, or dead tired from working a 60 hr week. But hey, maybe that's just me?

The point of the thread before it got derailed is to find out how many people out there have no clue why we celebrate the 4th.

I don't need any man bashing from any mouthy women who are pissed that they didn't know either. This isn't about trying to stick up for one of your own or make excuses for ignorance. It is about educating yourself and the ones you love.

If there is someone in your circle who doesn't know such basic fundamental information such as why do we celebrate the 4th then it is your duty to inform the ignorant. Only by doing this will the ignorant masses, (and humanity for that matter), stand a chance.

And not those cheap walmart pillows...the real feather ones.

But you can decide for an ENTIRE population that since you don't get befuddled when your tired, nobody else should either. hhhhmmmm

Good! I am glad, Must of made you a good salesmen.

Its just you. Most people don't have superbrains.

The point of the thread before it got derailed is to find out how many people out there have no clue why we celebrate the 4th.

Here I thought it was to publicly humiliate your wife.

Mouthy women?
Now I know your patronizing. and a sexist. ANd it only took one post to get it out too. What decade did you go to high school? I will take my pregnant belly into the kitchen now and cook you up some grub and just let you take care of everything.
P.S.

I probably know the reason more then you do.

Yes, Which is what attracted me to the thread in the first place. Most people don't know or bother to look, when it is one of the most fascinating periods in American history. OMG, someone let this woman learn to read!

It is when the Jonas Brothers and Ashlee Simpson do an outside concert for the fallen Amercan Idol contestants err sumpin'.

I swear I am on a mission now. I am going to ask this question at every holiday now. Not just from my wife but everyone in my circle. If there are people in my circle who don't know such basic info then it is MY fault to a degree and that is a burdon I just can't live with.

I still want you all to ask this questions to people around you and get back to me. I want to know how wide spread this is.

Has anyone yet made a comparison to some of Jay Leno's bit, when he goes out "JayWalking"??

It's like asking people what month the Fourth of July is in, and they can't answer!!!

That was kind of what I had in mind when I asked her this question. I never in a million years would have thought she would get it wrong.

FYI, I asked her on several different occasions, she has been off for 5 days now, well rested, and not on any medications. SHE JUST DOESN"T KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now how many others are out there. Are you all as afraid to find out the answer as I am?????

My boyfriend, friends and family ALL know the history of 4th of July. This is basic elementary school knowledge.

I guess surrounding yourself with people that know these things is not important to you..... not judging, just saying. I choose to live differently.

First of all, don't diss the Jonas brothers, they are excellent musicians who turn simple words into emotional and spiritual experiences for millions of people.Second, generalizations about a certain sex is bad,i could agree with your statements if you narrowed it down a bit to a certain group of woman. But not a sweeping statement.Third of all, if your posts are any indication of how much respect you have for your wife,i think she deserves better and should leave your mega sized encyclopedia of a brain.Yes i realise what i just said, and have no qualms about the repercussions of such a statement.

Well I know the answer but I really don't care that much about it. lol Then again I am a Canadian woman so ....

Personally I wouldn't be that upset if people didn't know why we up in Canada celebrate July 1st or any other holiday. As long as they show patriotic pride and enjoy the day to celebrate together. My children know why we celebrate each holiday.

You really shouldn't get so upset about it. Lots of people don't know a lot of basic information. Like people in New York are surprised to find out their winters are colder then where I live. It doesn't bother me. I just laugh and explain that no that's not true and move on. No need to get your panties in a knot.
