Preliminary accident report is up

This site (above linked) is already referring to crew and passengers as 'Fatalities'...

I hope that's premature.

does the flight path go anywhere near or through the Bermuda Triangle - I know its far fetched but it could be the latest case of a missing plane...

But lets hope nothing serious has happened and they all survive...

I know it's easy for some types of people to be disconnected from the loss of others peoples lives and the pain their families have to go through due to the fact that it doesn't immediately effect you.

But you did however prove how people seem to lose a sense of reality when viewing the tragedy over others lives through the media as you so easily compare it to a book...it's sad.

This is real life not a movie, book, or video game, people will feel pain and if you can not at least show respect and empathy it would probably be best to say nothing at all.

This is terrible news, fingers x that there are survivors.

Does anyone know if the LHC is back up and running yet, I think with the Wales beaching themselves and now a plane coming down is something going on?

whilst we can all hope its premature , a sudden loss of power at cruise atltiude does not bode well. especially since now after (quite correctly) air france using available data are now saying the aircraft is lost - they correctly said it was overdue till given best possible calculations the fuel would have run out.

It sounds like an electrical short circuit after strong turbulence is the cause and that the plane was able to make some kind of communication.

a quote from pprune:

To all speculating GZCP has the whole array..GPS SATCOM ACARS SELCAL..no airline is going to get into the specifics without facts..this will be treated as aircraft missing comm lost till the first sign of contact in whatever form that might be :-(. AF MCC has live tracking as well and I have a feeling loss of contact times will be corrected too. The ELT would have been triggered too.. so there will be something soon

Actually this is abovetopsecret.com. Where's the harm in speculation? Be it supernatural or otherwise? As of this moment in time, this is a genuine mystery and should be treated as such.

This plane should have been able to glide for a long time in the highly unusual event of both engines shutting down and a total electrical breakdown and should never have been more than 400 miles away from a diversionary runway.

Has just been announced by Air France that a message was received that they had experienced a short circuit after strong turbulence at 02:14 GMT.

Yeah BBC just reported a distress call was made by the crew that they struck turbulence which caused electrical failure.

Maybe my theory of losing electrics in darkness and falling out of Mach Box was right ?

I find it quite disturbing too.
There are conflicting news about the disappearance time from radar screens. As far as 0130 GMT (Reuters) to 0600 GMT (AFP). That's a huge gap.

A search and rescue aircraft is about to take off from Dakar, Senegal.

Because to make a game of other people's tragedy is macabre and offensive.

True, though I didn't see anybody playing games. Speculation should be tolerable regardless of how extreme or far-fetched is may sound, especially here at ATS.
