So what if it was a joke.

She went on a hate filled rant about Rush with a few bad jokes mixed in and President Obama laughed.

Rush does this on a daily basis and the same people who gripe and slam Rush are saying that this is okay. If Rush had said he hoped that Obama gets lung cancer as a joke, you guys would be the one complaining and the Rush supporters would be the ones saying that it was a joke.

I don't see the differance.

Yeah, except when Rush says it, it's not in a comedic context.

If you can't see the difference between the two, then I don't know what to tell you.

Well as far as I know Rush has never wished Obama to become seriously ill. I don't listen to him, but I'm sure if he had said it someone would have posted it on here.

Thats why I said IF he had joked about it the shoe would be on the other foot. You would attack him and Rush supporters would defend him.

I listened to her little rant on Rush and while it was suppose to be in a comedic form. I get the feeling that she really wasn't joking.

Wanda Sykes = not funny. Does she have a career, and if so, how?

Regardless, count me as one whose sense of humor is worn thin from witnessing the seemingly systematic destruction of our Republic by the Bush and Obama administrations. So both parties get to play at being funny and self deprecating while my son's future is destroyed by crooks who bribe them to look the other way. Sorry, but I am not laughing.

You of all people need to laugh... your view on this is way too serious.

Think "extremism" in thought... and if you can't laugh in the face of all of that you speak of, then you truly have given control of your joy over to your objective world.

I have been following Rush lately and this guy has without doubt crossed into the realm of treasonous behavior. Not only that he is enjoying it. In my view he is no longer an American, so he is fair game to be attacked and even laughed at by our president.

So that's your opinion on anyone whose opinion doesn't jive with your own? What if I were to tell you that I found your opinion, what you just wrote, so utterly reprehensible that I believe it no longer makes YOU an American? What if I say YOU are fair game to be attacked by anyone on ATS simply because I don't agree with what you say?

If I had stated I wanted America to fail then by all means go for it. But I never said that. I am saying Limbaugh wants America to fail, he is trying to make this happen for his own political gain. It's far beyond 'opinion' it's outright treason.

Do you not comprehend or simply ignore the fact that Rush never said he wanted America to fail? I don't listen to the man myself, I feel that when I do catch his show that he gets a little repetitive.

But I can accept what he said and it wasn't that he wanted America to fail.

President Obama doesn't have the power to bring down America if his policies fail.

If President Obama's policies fail, America will continue to go on.

I thought it was hilarious but you see I have a sense of humor, something that you do not.

That was obviously nervous laughter. Obama was just being polite. He wasn't overly enthusiastic about the joke. If you had but a modicum of a social conscience you might have actually noticed. This has turned into just another opportunity for the self-proclaimed, stalwart, freedom-loving "defenders of the nation", the innocent, victimized Republicans, to expose the so-called, albeit obviously nonexistent, liberal elitism in Washington. This is unsubstantiated tripe; shame on the OP for devising such inadequate and misplaced politics! Get real. This thread is beneath the attention of everyone on this board.

Say what you want.

But if the shoe was on the other foot those who are saying it was just a joke would be saying how it was innappropriate.

But since it was about Rush, then that means that the Republicans are just being cry babies.

I don't paticulary like Rush, but even I think that it was not appropriate for President Obama to laugh at it. He can compose himself and be serious when wants to be. We have all seen it. I find it hard to believe it was a nervous laugh.

Considering President Obama himself has made it known that he doesn't paticulary like Rush.

I agree with you, as the leader of the nation it shows little class on his side. He should act as a moral leader. What does this teach young people? I remember during his campaign, he was the first presidential candidate that I can remember that says we should capture and "kill" suspected terrorist, or take em out as he continually says to this day. Again what does this teach young people. Not even Dubya said that. I know I will get flamed for that but bring them to justice would be a better term as a moral leader.

[edit on 10-5-2009 by timewalker]

What is Obama teaching young people?? At least he has sent a postive message of change and restoration of hope to America and the rest of the world, for that matter. Keep in mind, this is a friggin joke. Any kids old enough to know this is a joke are probably old enough to understand the reason why it's a joke. Rush Limbaugh can sure dish it out too. If he can't take it, he shouldn't be in his line of work. It's a freakin joke anyway.. The only people butt-hurt over this are right wingers and Limbaugh-hugging Dittoheads in general.

What is scarier is what Rush Limbaugh is teaching young people. This is the kind of conservative brainwashing that spawns corrupt know-nothings like George W. Bush. Rush Limbaugh is so afraid of getting defamed that he will not only attack anyone who doesn't agree with him. He will also belittle them and refuse to accept or admit when he is wrong (even if he knows he is). He's got alot of leeway on how to analyze and apply his anti-democrat approach. But anything that ever comes from a democrat, he will never agree with. So in alot of ways this defeated, modern approach to conservative politics has always just existed to counter ideas and principles of the Democrat party in general when it really hasn't done anything to reshape the landscape of American politics since Reagan. It seems that for the past decade, or so, it only exists to disagree with and counter Democrat principles and ideals. And, in this way, Rush Limbaugh only exists to disagree with and counter Democrats. Nothing less, Nothing more.

In the words of Lewis Black..
The Republican Party is the party of no ideas.
The Democrat Party is the party of bad ideas.

Republicans are making the Obama presidency a Partisan issue because they know that they are the unpopular party in the country and that they need to defend their image in order to save face (what's left, anyway).

The only reason this is even in the news is because the Republican party is already on the ropes here and because the Republicans have escalated Rush Limbaugh to such a degree of party authority (even though he is just a talk-show host) that now he is being joked about and the president laughs.. The red flags go up for people scared for the future of their sacred Republican party. At least we have a president with the ability to openly laugh at a good joke. Can we move on please? This is ridiculous and its being blown way out of proportion.

Pffft, it was just a joke. Though I can understand the sentiment that her loudmouthery and Obama's smirk had a whiff of 'black brotherhood' about it.

I don't like Rush Limbaugh, I don't like Wanda Sykes and I don't like Barack Obama; but this was just a stupid, unfunny joke. The crowd didn't seem too overwhelmed by her sense of humour either...

That said, it was a little close-to-the-bone for the PRESIDENT to be laughing at; but hey, that's 'CHANGE' for you huh?

Where?

oooooohhhh ... you mean all those people who showed that what you said about Rush wasn't true?
Those people aren't 'uptight rush babies' ... they (me included) just like to keep the facts straight.

I can't stand Rush.

But when people like you say 'he said he wants America to fail' ... well, that's just plain wrong and even though I can't stand the guy, that's a statement that deserves to be corrected.

THis is pure propaganda - if you disagree with the President - you are a terrorist, you should be tortured and you want America to fail.

Of course you oppose the President because he is a fascist, wants to deprive Americans of their freedom, and is a globalists shill - sorry wrong answer - off the the concentration camps for you.

What!!?? Wanda Sykes not funny? Didn't you see Pootie Tang!?

I mean just 'cause a girl like to dress fancy and stand on the street corner near some whores, you automatically think she's hookin'? Gots to say the nay-no my brother, gots to say the nay-no.

As for Rush, he's a bad biddy. He needs to be rejuvenated. He was juvenated before, but he lost it. Sa Da Tay...

I agree FM, the crowd felt uncomfortable I watched it a few times,

To be fair I bet Obama felt the same.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the majority of republicans dislike Rush? He kind of paints the entire party in a bad light IMO.

Obama should have just given a polite grin rather than show some actual laughter at another bad joke by Sykes. This particular event has always been a roast of sorts, but she took it to far with several of her jokes.

By booking her, this is what they clearly wanted anyway. You get what you pay for. If they wanted to keep the event mature and playful they should have booked Jay Leno or Jerry Seinfeld. They downgraded the event by hiring Sykes. That was their choice. Plain and Simple.

i'd also like to add that Barack Obama also laughed at:

Jokes about Barack Obama
Jokes about Michelle Obama
Jokes about Joe Biden
Jokes about Nancy Pelosi

So either he hates himself, his wife, his VP, and nancy pelosi

or he's just laughing at a funny joke.

Conservatives really need to get a clue.
