Just been analysing the data, the reason why contrails have not been apparent is due to the air being way to dry for the water vapour to condense to visible ice crystals.
Examples and data taken from weather balloon soundings(air temperature followed by humidity in blue font)
21st April
404.0 7220 -35.5 57.6 9 0.04 295 9 308.0 308.1 308.0
400.0 7290 -35.9 -58.9 8 0.03 290 8 308.2 308.4 308.3
23rd April
400.0 7270 -34.3 -47.3 26 0.13 100 20 310.3 310.9 310.4
396.0 7340 -34.8 -47.8 25 0.13 100 20 310.5 311.0 310.6
As you can see, weather data during the week preceding the swine flu outbreak, actually shows that contrail development was extremely unlikely. That is why you never saw many.

I still notice them here in Kansas , although they seem to be spraying at a higher altittude now and laying more of n X pattern rather than the typical checkboard pattern.
