Fox Mocks Canadian Military

As Canadians mourn the loss of four more fallen soldiers in Afghanistan, a videotaped segment of an American TV talk show where panelists mock Canadian soldiers as slackers is making the rounds on the Internet.

The five-minute segment, which aired recently on Fox News late-night program Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld and later posted on YouTube.com, features American panelists suggesting Canadian soldiers need time off for "manicures and pedicures."

When most americans are hoping for Obama to repair their international image after the damage done by the Bush administration, here we have Fox news spitting on the sacrifices of our soldiers. How can anyone in the media not be aware that Canada has a ongoing mission in Afganistan? This has to be the saddest excuse I've heard in a while.

Public relations with your northern neighboors just took a nose dive.

Its already been discussed in another section of the site.

Red Eye is satire and the host is a former editor for Maxim magazine. Its not a news broadcast. There's a reason that they put it on at 3 in the morning. Its an entertainment program and nothing more.

vor78, why are you apologizing for Fox 'Noise'??

This is heinous, and NOT 'entertainment'.

Glenn Beck, blubbering on air like a child, now THAT's entertainment!!!

Red Eye is just an intentionally ridiculous show. The show is not intended to be taken seriously. They make fun of pretty much everyone and its not politically correct by any means. It would be different if it were Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly who'd said this, but it wasn't.

Red Eye has to be one of the stupidest shows on Fox news.

Its more like the pure crap found on the E! channel.

I checked the show on google, and found nothing saying the show is satire. A check on wiki says "Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld is a late-night/early morning CP show on the Fox News Channel.".

Even if it was satire, it was a poor choice of skit.

Does this look like a serious newscast to you?

They pretty much offend everyone.

I will agree, obviously this show is crap. However, the fact that they show trash is irrelevent to the fact they majorly disrespected the Canadian Forces. I have yet to see any disclamer for the show saying its a satire and not to be taken seriously. If im wrong, please someone point it out.

I don't know if they provide an on-screen disclaimer or not. Its been quite a while since I've watched it, so I can't remember. That said, I can't believe anyone who watches the show itself actually takes it seriously. The show is hosted by a guy who, at the start of every show, jokingly tells everyone that if they disagree with his monologue, they're worse than Hitler, afterall.

yes,, vor....IF Hannity or O'Reilly had said it, it would have been different.

BUT, they're just 'entertainers' too! they certanly aren't journalists.

This embarrassment goes to the heart of Fox.....especially those two we've mentioned. They both tend to be reactionary, even to the point of twisting the 'facts'....for ratings. The hyprocirisy is evident, over the years, as they've been called out numerous times...with nary an apology nor a correction. Valid journalists, when shown to be wrong, will issue a correction.

It has been suggested that if Rupert Murdoch could see a way to make MORE money by flipping to a Liberal format, he'd tell Roger Ailes to get it done!!

really....there is satire, and there is just extremely poor taste. I see the latter.....

I'm not defending what was said at all, merely pointing out that the show itself tries to be ridiculous. If you watch it long enough, you're going to be offended by it.

For anyone interested, here is the original piece that caused this controversy:

Well said and I agree fully.

"Sorry, we were trying to be funny" isn't a excuse for remarks like this. If a canadian made such comments, americans would be pretty fired up I imagine.

vor78, glad you linked that so I could see it. It further cements my disdain for 'Fox'.

There was NOTHING funny about it, never even rose to the level of 'satire' in any way.

What I saw were five ignorant boobs simply re-inforcing the impression that many Americans are stupid and insensitive and out of touch.....

After watching the video for the second time, I'm starting to think americans should be offended by this. Could anything make the US look dumber than being so ignorant about your closest neighboor and ally?

Fox News has made fun of Canada many times in the past as far as not intervening in world issues.

Even Tucker said everyone in Canada has a bobsleigh

Being a satire show is one thing.

Hiding behind the veil of "Comedy" and light-heartedness when making cracks about dead people, right after they die, is quite another.

Faux News has cowered behind everything from the Constitution to Satire to defending children's rights whenever they're accused of making a blatantly perverse and utterly tasteless remark.

What more should we expect from America's cesspool of mainstream media?

There's no doubt that its stupid. I just don't think its worth getting offended over, given the nature of that show.

These are the people they are belittling:

www.cbc.ca...

I've posted on this topic in another thread, it seems this incident with Fox has taken on a life of its own.

The Canadian Forces have a long and honourable tradition of bravery and sacrifice.

I'll say it again, these fools need a history lesson.

Deny Ignorance.

Just google it and see how may it offended. I even read a reply off a blog on Reddit from an american soldier who has trained with the Canadian Forces and was disgusted by these comments. Canadian Forces have been with the US from the begining in Afganistan and are the main force battling the Taliban for some time now. Of coarse Canadians will be offended by comments like this after we followed ol'GW into this war on false pretenses like many others who are no longer there.
