Why Do People Listen to Rush Limbaugh?

www.alternet.org

Despite the fact that he is bat# crazy, Rush Limbaugh continues to reign supreme over the GOP. The conservative talk show host has styled himself as the voice of the Republican Party, even as he spews hate-filled rhetoric and brazenly reiterates his hope that the President fails in his attempt to rescue one of the worst financial crises in history.

His posturing is met with only quiet muttering by more moderate conservatives. Meanwhile, politicians who vocally challenge Limbaugh end up slimily backpedaling within one news cycle.

Why does Limbaugh inspire a strong enough following among many conservatives to warrant public respect by GOP heavyweights, who, undoubtedly, also privately think he’s bat# crazy?

In a recent article on AlterNet, Deepak Chopra suggests that Limbaugh’s popularity has little to do with what he’s actually saying. Instead, what keeps people tuning in is Limbaugh’s style -- that particular brand of loudly blared bile perfected by conservative talk show hosts in their decade of dominance over the airwaves.

According to Chopra, shock jocks like Limbaugh:

... exist purely as steam vents. The common citizen gets to be pissed off by the millions, unrelentingly, without cease or solution, and in return, he is praised. To be outraged is to be morally superior."

Your anger strips away tolerance, sympathy, and regard for "the other." Hence the almost imperial bearing of Limbaugh, the bland certainty that because he never stops being angry, he never stops being right.

I've always wondered that myself.

A neighbor of mine listens to him nonstop... my brain would turn to jelly and dribble out of my ear if I tried that... perhaps that is what has happened since he seems to be going down hill.

If anything came out of this election is that people are sick and tired of the politics of division and hate yet if the Republicans embrace limbaugh's rhetoric and continue to be the party of no... the party of divison and hate... then they are going to continue losing elections.

Limbaugh... like Coulter and Savage, Beck and Hannity is on the far right and like it or not they have never been a majority and if the Republican party continues to cater and kowtow to them...

They might have to sell their elephant to a glue factory.

I think some people listen to him much like some love to watch the terrible auditions on American Idol. For a laugh.

I despise every single one of those people that you mentioned, but ESPECIALLY Limbaugh. The guy is an utter embarrassment to the human race, I can't believe that people actually buy into his rhetoric. He reminds me of the chubby school bully in elementary school.

I find nothing in him funny, just another hate spewer. If some people find that funny... that speaks volumes about them... not my sense of humor as some might claim.

Only on ATS are people unable to understand. Look people DO NOT have to be the same, think the same, act the same, etc. no matter how much we dislike it.

Not everyone wants to be on their knees when thinking about Obama.
Not everyone wants to accept that the homosexual lifestyle is ok.
Not everyone wants to accept that people DO have other skin colors.
Not everyone wants to accept that people follow different religions.
Not everyone believes the government is evil.
Not everyone believes animals should be treated like humans.
Not everyone believes illegal alliens should have rights in America.

The list could go on and on. People are intitled to their own way of living and thinking. If people want to listen to Air America (the liberals) then so be it. If people want to listen to Rush (the right wings) then so be it.

Both sides of the political spectrum have good points and bad points IMO. When we can learn to take all of the good stuff and meet in the middle, thats when things will start to finally work.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again:

The fact that this drug soaked fat man is the defacto head of the party of Lincoln, Goldwater, and Reagan shows you just how far the GOP has sunk. :shk:

I did not sign up to be led by this baffon and if this is the direction the GOP is headed (Who am I kidding, its already there) then I will switch for the first time since I was 18 to independant.

I think people should listen to all views when digging for the truth.

Even opposing views, how do you think science works?

If you shut out what someone has to say because you don't like what they have to say, you might miss something.

He has valid points, Obama did drugs too, so what.

The few times I have listened to him, he is so outrageous and full of arrogance, and spews so much crap, I wonder how anyone could listen to him. And yes, sometimes he sounds so ignorant, I do crack a smile.

I don't think any of us were asking anybody to be the same, or to look at things from our point of view.
I don't like the Repubs OR the Dems, and my dislike of Limbaugh has absolutely NOTHING to do with either party.
I just can't believe that some people are deluded enough to actually applaud this man as he makes an A** of himself.

Tell me what has he said that you think is full of crap?

I don't listen to him so I don't know.

List some quotes.

Let's get down to the real nitty gritty.

So what I am sensing here is most people don't like him because of his personality?

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Who the hell anointed Rush the de facto head of the Republican party? Besides Rush and the Democrats.

He's an "entertainer" and as much the face of the Republicans as Michael Moore is of the Democrats. In fact, maybe both those lardballs could satisfy their need for attention and do themselves some good by a stint on Celebrity Fit Club. Then Rush could head over to Celebrity Rehab while Moore goes to Celebrity Crab Fishing. [Okay, I made the last one up, but who wouldn't like to see a group of obnoxious "celebrities" potentially swept into the Bering Sea?]

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

Limbaugh represents everything that is wrong with the Republican party and conservatives in general. The fact that he has millions of conservatives listening to him only continues the stereotype of conservatives not having intelligence and an argument beyond "gawd", and rightfully so. Let's look at their arguments.

Against abortion. Why? God.

Against homosexuality. Why? God.

Against evolution. Why? God.

Against science. Why? God.

Yet they say they are individual freedom and captalism as I fully support. But what are their reasons for wanting those things? Anti reason. Faith. God. Definitely not because they are good but because some preacher somewhere convinced them that their God was in favor of these things. Yet if you look at the bible, it sounds much more like Marxism and socialism than it does capitalism.

Mr. Limbaugh is in favor of a theocracy, much like the one in Iran. Only difference is the symbol of their worship.

I am in favor of capitalism, property rights, limited government (limited to protecting my rights, not violating them), pursuit of happiness, individualism. People call me a conservative for wanting those things but I prefer not to be labeled in the same party where men like Rush Limbaugh are considered heros.

Same reason why people listen to Keith Olberman, Rosie O'Donnel, Joy Ward, Al Franken, Rhandi Rhodes and Ed Schultz. I have heard just as much hate from them, if not more. But i guess the left usually gets a free pass every time their talk heads stick their foot deep in their mouth, and spew their vile and hatred towards the right. and Rush does have a point. why does the left constantly view minorities as victims and as such, treats blacks and hispanics like victims and helpless? How is that acceptable? Isn't that racist?

It's pretty much a combination of his personality, his ideological views, and his extremely tiny little brain.

My Bipartisan Stimulus

Let's see what he has written.

There's a serious debate in this country as to how best to end the recession. The average recession will last five to 11 months; the average recovery will last six years. Recessions will end on their own if they're left alone. What can make the recession worse is the wrong kind of government intervention.

I believe the wrong kind is precisely what President Barack Obama has proposed. I don't believe his is a "stimulus plan" at all -- I don't think it stimulates anything but the Democratic Party. This "porkulus" bill is designed to repair the Democratic Party's power losses from the 1990s forward, and to cement the party's majority power for decades.

Keynesian economists believe government spending on "shovel-ready" infrastructure projects -- schools, roads, bridges -- is the best way to stimulate our staggering economy. Supply-side economists make an equally persuasive case that tax cuts are the surest and quickest way to create permanent jobs and cause an economy to rebound. That happened under JFK, Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. We know that when tax rates are cut in a recession, it brings an economy back.

Recent polling indicates that the American people are in favor of both approaches.

Notwithstanding the media blitz in support of the Obama stimulus plan, most Americans, according to a new Rasmussen poll, are skeptical. Rasmussen finds that 59% fear that Congress and the president will increase government spending too much. Only 17% worry they will cut taxes too much. Since the American people are not certain that the Obama stimulus plan is the way to go, it seems to me there's an opportunity for genuine compromise. At the same time, we can garner evidence on how to deal with future recessions, so every occurrence will no longer become a matter of partisan debate.

Geeee this could have been written by many of the people on this forum.
