Oh GOD! MAKE SURE THEY DO NOT START TAKING RISPERDAL. Here is my horror story from someone who was prescribed (actually forced to take it) it for anxiety when I was around the same age as your Niece:
www.abovetopsecret.com...
You are absolutely right, they are now marketing it (and other drugs who now have lawsuits against them) for reasons it was not intended to be used for. Did you know medical marijuana is only legal in handful of states, but amphetamines (the same substance found in coc aine) is prescribed to children who are about the same age as a toddler? Even Risperdal that they claim isn't dangerous has been known to bring on bouts of d.i.d. and even cause men to lactate and gain breasts! Yeah, weird. Schizophrenic's it probably helps, I wouldn't know, but in no way did this help any anxiety or depression I had (which was normal teenage anxiety and depression). This along with being placed on zoloft and about 2 other pills made me withdraw from my friends, not date, not enjoy life, extreme anxiety to the point of feeling unconnected with the world, even hallucinate (nothing like figures or anything but certain light phenomena). A long while back after being on it for years I stopped taking it and finally got my life back!

If you want to understand how screwed up a lot of the people are in charge of medicating people with this drug, you need not look further than my story.

I've been working on a lawsuit now for the past couple years but keep hitting dead ends. None of the nurses want to come forward with some of the things that would go on.

I spent some time considering whether to respond to your post or to just leave the chip where it was. In the end I decided that I should tell you that the internet is the medical professions' biggest enemy and the hypochondriac and his mothers best friend.

I don't see the point to arguing with you about the issue of all the diseases that Risperdone is claimed to be the panacea for, you are already determined to disagree. The youtube clip was to illustrate that a mother taking a child to the doctor doesn't automatically lead to the conclusion that the parent is doing it out of care for the child. Whilst Munchausen's by proxy is a rare and disputable diagnosis, hypochondriasis and hypochondriasis by proxy are not.

As far as your niece being treated for depression, they obviously think she has a mood disorder maybe she is bipoalr.

Statements like this shows me how you jump to conclusions with totally no facts. By the way a lobotomy also helps with Oppositional Defiance Disorder. About 60 years ago if autism had been as pandemic as it is now , I am sure it would have been used as a treatment for the acting out symptoms.

Yeah, I can tell you spent about 2 seconds. First, I guess you just decided to IGNORE the doctors I mentioned and their creditials, along with the different therapies my son has and is still undergoing. That makes me a hypochondriac isn't that what you said? Oh wait, because I posted a link supporting my claim? Well where did you get your article? The internet?

I have an idea? Why don't you stick to the books, and I'll stick to raising my autistic child. Better yet, maybe you should do a few rounds with a 'Psychiatrist a real doctor' and get a better understanding of how psych drugs work!! And while your at it spend some time with some real autistic kids and tell their parents they are All hypochondriacs. Your bed-side manner truly lacks!!

More importantly, do your sister a favor. Forget you ego for a moment, call the prescribing Dr. Really don't understand why you didn't in the first place. Talk to him and tell him your concerns. Surely he will talk shop with another doctor right?

And one more thing, I didn't say your niece had bipolar I said maybe. But I still question why a clinical Psychologist doesn't know that an atypical anti-psychiotic is used to treat mood disorders. And thinks that All autistic kids are alike AND thinks by solving one issue of autism that they WOULD ALL BE CURED!

Yes, with your delightful bed side manner and your knowledge you will earn yourself quite a reputation.

Thank you jomina for your input on resperidone and backing up what I and the research I linked stated. I know you get it!!! We saw the same results.

Well I guess jomina just blew
Your argument regarding "parents who get their info. off the internet" argument right out of the water.

Guess their a hypochondriac too!!

ALL drugs are poison....

No study has proven that any drug is much better than using the imagination to believe that a sugar pill is going to help.
If your imaginations is going to help about as much as a pill, is it worth it?
I mean taking the chance?

Check out the list of side-effects for ANY medication. Even aspirin. Taken properly, drugs are poisoning your body and damaging it in some way. Check out the Health Canada Adverse Reaction database here. They say that the adverse reactions listed are only between one and ten percent of all those experienced. Allowing for patients neglecting to report it or the doctor not taking the time to fill in the form to report it; which is pretty much the case now. With the list of side-effects that can be experienced and ARE experienced, is it worth it? The odds have narrowed?

Then you have natures medication, THC or marijuana, that is so great in its qualities that the pharmaceutical companies try to mimic the drug in the form of Marinol and have failed completely. Why take a natural drug with NO side-effects and then synthesize it making it worse. Trying to create a drug based on a natural one and not succeeding, is it worth it? Closing in?

Some will say that THC has side-effects, but euphoria as a side-effect would be like saying a side-effect of alcohol is drunkenness or slurred speech. Do you call it a side-effect when you drink?

Some drugs like Strattera and Concerta can lead to the use of another drug to counter act the first. Example... Having to use another drug to control your bladder because you use Strattera and have no ability to empty your bladder which leads to ten visits to the bathroom in three hours. The bladder control drug has its own list of side-effects. Is this worth it? Odds are much worse now eh?

We should not use any drugs until there is a proper study done on each and every one of them.

Example... Ritalin has been around since 1954, that's 55 years people. Do your realize the longest follow-up for patients for ritalin has been a five month study? Most of these LONG ones have been recently. I say LONG because most are usually only about six or eight weeks followup. Not very long when they tell you that they actually don't know what these drugs do to the brain. Long term indications show that Ritalin as well as most other drugs that are for the same condition, control of the human spirit, have side-effects that can cause effects much later than the five months they followed these test subjects. Is this worth it? WOW! Are they working for you?

I'd introduce my loved one to THC before I'd have my child put on one of these mind control drugs.

For you that think about the legal system then... I would rather take them to the bar and introduce them to alcohol. At least the person has a better chance at life...

IMHO
Rgds

S&F Thanks

Quite honestly I have no idea why you are ranting to this degree, or for that matter generalizing what I said in order to come up with something to fit your conclusions. I think this may be a defensive avoidance reaction. Maybe you should be trying an atypical anti-psychotic drug? My guess is that you probably are on a mood stabiliser though, frustration tends to be one of the side effects.

Honestly for me to argue with you would be pointless. You don't appear to be open to this discussion. Nor do you appear to be reading what others have said on this thread on their experiences with the "mood stabliser" Risperdal.

In simpler terms:

1) I never implied that you were drugging your child because you either have Munchausen's by proxy nor did I suggest that you are a hypochondriac ;
2) I was stating that there are many mothers out there who lack parenting skills and have taken to mothering by Rx. There are also many mothers who are attempting to get control of their and their children's lives by addressing the psychological problems by suggesting a Dx to their General Practitioner and asking for relief.

For the conspiracy theorists on ATS here is an article on the fathers of kiddie drug peddlers ( makes me proud not to be a REAL doctor):

"A world-renowned Harvard child psychiatrist whose work has helped fuel an explosion in the use of powerful antipsychotic medicines in children earned at least $1.6 million in consulting fees from drug makers from 2000 to 2007 but for years did not report much of this income to university officials, according to information given Congressional investigators.

By failing to report income, the psychiatrist, Dr. Joseph Biederman, and a colleague in the psychiatry department at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Timothy E. Wilens, may have violated federal and university research rules designed to police potential conflicts of interest, according to Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa. Some of their research is financed by government grants.

Like Dr. Biederman, Dr. Wilens belatedly reported earning at least $1.6 million from 2000 to 2007, and another Harvard colleague, Dr. Thomas Spencer, reported earning at least $1 million after being pressed by Mr. Grassley’s investigators. But even these amended disclosures may understate the researchers’ outside income because some entries contradict payment information from drug makers, Mr. Grassley found."

New York Times

"Harvard child psychiatrist Joseph Biederman and and his ties to the drug industry are back in the news today.

The New York Times and the Journal are reporting that documents released as part of litigation show that Johnson & Johnson, maker of antipsychotic Risperdal, provided financial support for a research institute for pediatric psychopathology that Biederman wanted funded. Click here for a J&J email describing discussions about the institute and here for a breakdown of J&J’s goals and budget to support work on Risperdal for children and adolescents."

My ex is on Risperdal. He is a psychophrenic and it is the only thing that has put him in some sort of reality. I really think it is good for that but not depression. I had a nervous breakdown when my 2 year old was diagnosed with cancer. I suffer from severe depression and I take Lamictal, it is a really safe drug and it work's. Just a suggestion. Wish her good luck, from me.

Oh my....I am so sorry to hear about your 2 year old. I can understand being very upset from that. You are her/him are in my prayers.

I also would like to concur that I'm sure it works well for schizophrenic's. I would just be very weary of putting someone with simple anxieties or depression on it. For something like that I would consider Zoloft a better bet as long as it is monitored, due to some suicidal tendencies.

Hey, on an off note, certain video games help expand the brain. Of course you still need outdoor and social activities, but video games like rpg, adventure and puzzle games get the thought processes going, and racing or guitar hero-type games improve attention span, reflexes and dexterity. Not all games have to be bad. Just make sure your kid doesn't sit in front of one all day. I'm glad people these days are keeping an open mind. Keep it up!

Please think about this one a few times before you respond: even though someone who is completely out of control, say in a case of severe autism or schitzophrenia are probably better off taking it (but that's only because if I were that way I would choose to be sedated), depressed people who can still get to the bathroom should not. The only thing an antidepressant has ever done is provide apathy. I am welcoming anyone who has ever taken antidepressants, or something for depression, to please reply to this post if you've actually been made to feel HAPPY by these drugs. Of all the years I've been on them (and I've practically tried everything, some twice) I have never felt "happy" unless I had a reason to. The pills made me care less about my stress...it dulled my senses. That's why you see a lot of the word "zombie" on these posts. I can't even take them to get me over the hump if something terrible happens, because feeling sedated for so long has made me loathe them. If you want temporary relief of the pain of life it's just as well to start doing street drugs. At least weed has been around long enough, and has been been tested by enough people, to know ALL the risks and side effects. So far the wost one being that the smoke's bad for you. Ever looked at the transcript that comes with an antidepressant? Illegal substance is looking pretty good by comparison...well not stuff like crack, but you know what I mean. Basically, antidepressants are a crutch like any other drug. Everyone absorbs their seritonin differently...you can even heighten it or lower it by changing your diet. Exercise is good for stress. Breathing and muscle relaxation techniques are good for anxiety. Even rubbing a smooth pebble can make you feel less crazy. People have forgotten how to cope with stress and run to the first thing that can relieve it. It's a natural reaction, we all do it. But you gotta suck it up and punch life in the face. Screw being depressed and sedated, you don't deserve it!

I am sorry your family is going through this and you not being able to be hands on as much as you would like has to be exasperating.

My step-son had a bought of depression when he was 15-16 years old and my estranged wife wanted to take him to a psychiatrist. I told her he does not need a doctor at this point that what he is going though is normal. Sometime in late puberty, the body secretes the sleep-related hormone melatonin at a different time than it normally does. This changes the circadian rhythms that guide a person's sleep-wake cycle. This on top of modern teen peer pressure and the way the teen mind works was his problem and is natural. He just needed time, at most a good psychologist. I was talked into it anyway.

We went to this guy and I told him upfront my diagnosis. He asked me what my degree was in with a smug look on his face. He had no idea of the concept I was telling him and I asked him aren’t you a specialist with teens? Have you not looked into what Stanford University is doing in this area? He didn’t have a clue. I then told him I do not believe in drug treatment for most mental illness unless it is of an extreme case.

He told my son that he was not to talk to his parents about the doctor patient relationship and what they talked about in his office. After a month of sessions my son went into a deep depression and the doctor convinced him he had experienced a trauma when he was a small child and prescribed him a seratonin reuptake inhibitor. I was livid! I almost wanted to kick this guys but around the moon and back. Well I did want to I just didn’t do it.

My questions for members are these:

1) When will the world start saying this has to stop? Or will we wait for a whole generation to be hooked on one drug or another helping to make doctors and the pharmaceutical companies rich.

I wish I knew. It seems media keeps a lid on it for the most part because of all the dollars in advertising from big-pharma. Speak out like Tom Cruise did and you end up being ostracized by the media.

2) What will this new generation be like when they grow up? They have been drugged to become controllable.

If it weren't for my line of work and that Xenu thingy, and their intimidation tactics, I would so support Scientology . But NO! I think it's just time for parents to stop allowing drug companies to drug their kids.

You know the answer to that better than anyone on these boards. Scary isn’t it Myn?

My thoughts exactly about some of Scientology's approach to the mind. It had been derailed though hasn't it?

I wanted to make a brief comment about the title, "Risperdal - The drug companies are coming for your kids!". It's not your kids the drug companies want, it's money. The drug companies are coming for your money and kids will be the collateral damage as a result. Most of the time when a pedestrian gets hit on the street, it wasn't because they were being aimed for, rather that pedestrian was between the driver and his/her goal.

That was very profound.

The darkness in the hearts of some have no limits to the abyss they fall into. I often wonder if I was born in the wrong time, for the life of me I do not understand what some are capable of.

I wish for a better dawn.
