I don't listen to his radio program. I've just heard small clips when CNN plays his remarks on their time. IMO, he's an opinionated big mouth but he has every right to say what he pleases as long as it's NON violent.
Words can be ignored or turn the dial. You don't HAVE to listen to his rant.

bye

This has nothing to do with the First Amendment!

They're not trying to legally make him shut up. They are expressing THEIR opinions of him. That's THEIR right, too, ya know, even if we don't agree with what they're doing.

I know I was dramatic, but let's not over-dramatize this by claiming First Amendment right issues...

Heh heh heh, you libs really do make it easy don't you? You people think you are so smart but when you open your mouth you prove otherwise.

This has everything to do with the First Amendment right to voice ones opinion. It's really funny how you are so concerned about libs voicing their opinion about Rush but deny the fact that his comments are also protected by the same amendment. Really, thanks for proving my point, lib. Maybe you ought to read the original U.S. Constitution, not the one published by DNC!

Also, it is apparent libs aren't worried about doing anything beneficial for the country and are only worried about petty bovine excrement in attacking a private citizen!

None of that or the other insults are necessary.

That is not what BenevolentHeretic said; she did not deny that Rush has the First Amendment rights. She said (I believe wrongly) that it is not a First Amendment issue, but nothing approaching what you are accusing her of.

Once again, this is an issue of free speech.

I think that Limbaugh is a pompous windbag.

But, I think that this type of speech is what the constitution means when it guarantees free speech.

It is important to realize that you can't stifle political speech just because you find it repugnant. Otherwise, the next time, it may be your freedom of speech that is being blocked.

So, let the windbag have his say and you can choose not to listen to him.

Im not a fan of Rush either, but I think he has every right to his opinion.
So I defer to Votaire.....

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

Where will it end, first Rush, then Fox News or web sites that have a conservative tilt? This is not the business of Congress to tell us who and what to listen to....I for one did not enjoy having to listen to all of the negative comments about Sarah Palin, who I happened to find refreshing and the onlyway I could stomach voting this year!!! The media NEVER gave her the beginning of a chance and therefore drown out anything that others may have wanted to hear or would have found interesting and gone on and developed an opionion. I may not agree with everything that Rush says, but I take most people and their ideas with a "grain of salt" and then go onto formulate my own ideas!!! I want to hear Rush and I want to read what I might be interested in---it is my right as an American! I don't enjoy most of Hollywood and their statements, but they have a right to say them, I don't understand why they are often given so much emphasis....who are they to say one thing and Rush can not say another?

Politicians can only succeed if el-Rush-bo lets them succeed. That's the obvious answer here.

Hasn't anyone ever told these petition makers that you're not supposed to feed the trolls? If you dislike someone's opinion you should just ignore it.

Well said and very true! So here we go, now that power has shifted.. The left is going to be just as absurd and crazy as the right once was..
Oh boy.. Does it ever stop?
When will these people understand they are.... never mind I'm preaching to the choir here.. And most ATS members totally get it.
Yet those left and right folks will stay at odds with eachother until the end of time. They refuse to wake up.. They would rather keep this crap up.

For 8 years they can dish it out.. Yet now.. Seems they can't take it..

More bullocks to get us at ends with eachother!!
And Im not defending Rush.. But geezz.. Do we still live in the 80's?
Things don't change much..

These people making this petition need to take a chill pill..

(I happen to notice this while Im sitting here at work, and have just enough time to make this post..)

republicans did not really dish anything out in 8 years. remember the democrats took over in 2006 and still say the economic crisis is republicans faults when they were alrerady the majority for both houses for 2 years prior

I forgot, it was only ok for MSNBC and CNN to hate george bush because he is a republican, but for a PRIVATE citizen to criticize Obama, it must be squashed. dissent is not allowed in a democrat controlled congress/president.

You FAIL.(my new favourite word)
I don't think anyone hates Bush because he's a republican....It might, oh you know, have to do with the things he did while he was president. You have some way to go if you're still falling for that repub vs dem crap. Or maybe you don't like Obama so your judgement is clouded. Anything that clouds your judgement, such as alcohol, is not good for you. That said I don't agree with this move at all. Rush doesn't like Obama so of course he wants him to fail. Is Obama's skin that thin that they need to protect him from the Big Bad Rush? FAIL

I think that Rush is a big bloated blowhard and anybody that gives any of ideas any thought ...............

But this action is stupid. Talk about free publicity for the guy :shk: What exactly will this get the group filing it? Nothing. It ensures Rush's rating for years to come.

This is why I think our party is better as an opposition party. If we had a reasonable Republican President we could oppose their party for their lies and talk about that stuff. But now we're in full control and I believe if we act on our rage against what the Bush administration has done during the last 8 years and act on our rage for these right wing talk shows then we'll be making a very grave mistake.

It's fairly obviously a fundraising tool. Nothing more. It's not meant to stop Rush from saying one thing. Quite the contrary.

An online petition of this sort is designed to do one thing - garner millions of new names and e-mail addresses for online fundraising.

I seriously can't believe anyone here thinks it somehow offends Rush Limbaugh's First Amendment rights to use him as a marketing tool. Nothing more.

Next to Karl Rove, then George Bush, there is no greater icon to use to raise money among Democrats than Rush Limbaugh.

As for giving him publicity, that's the idea. Every time he opens his mouth he raises millions for Democrats nationwide.

This is no different than the NRCC starting a petition against Mike Moore or sending you a flyer with Ted Kennedy on it hyperventilating "They a-comin' for yer guns next! - Send money!"

You know what? I had not considered that angle and Kudos for bringing it up
Rush is for Dems like Osama is for Neocons.

...this is one of those threads where I just want to post my opinion and not bothering to read what type of predictible post that will just enflame me.
...but I bet there was some 1st amendment postings and of course the typical misunderstanding that it is some unrestricted right....wrong of course.
...I can speak against Rush because I listened to his show 5 days a week for nearly 6 months back when I was young. I was a ditto head but I remember coming out of my coma when he wouldn't let up on Barney Franks, for being queer.
...Rush is quite frankly anti-American. He hates this Country but loves the money he gets from other haters. He would be the first person to crucify Christ if he lived 2000 years ago. Hannity, Coultier, and Rush are deplorable....but you O'Reilly haters are kindred spirits with the Rush lovers. O'Reilly is an honest to goodness right wing conservative that you can hate for his "spin" and his ideology but he "believes" what he says, and he does love our Country. (yeah, I can't stand him for the most part, but I'm not blinded with ignorance)
Rush is about Rush and his ratings, power, and fame. The truth means nothing to him and if he has any true moral convictions then only his closest friends know them. His hate divides this Country his lies "5 billion going to ACORN" causes retarded threads where we battle it out with venom and a minimum of civility.
...Here at ATS we should at the very very least have the desire to deny ignorance in common. Since I have joined I have seen the steepest of drop offs when this political season got going. So many of you grab your threads off of the Drudge Report. So many threads are started not with any desire to have discourse but rather to piss people off or make some political statement and unfortuneately there are some that think if they start something controversial enough they will get a bunch of stars and flags and diggs and maybe a parade.
Any thread about "Rush" is going to cause the Left and the Right to go nuts on each other like some sort of Israel v Hamas type thing. What does that do.....? Helps the hater stay rich and famous and employed.
I thought the "deny ignorance" was a catchy motto for this site when I joined, but as time has gone by it really is a great ideal to strive for. Because ignorance IS easy, and comfortable.... so deny it. fight it. you will be better for it, and those around you will too.

As much as i dislike this man, he's still got freedom of speech. The demcrats are witch hunting as far as i'm concerned.

If Obama is smart he'll put a stop to it.

Bring your pitchforks, torches and any farming tools: I see a mob a comin' and it ain't pretty! See what one voice could do? It made a group of people angry. Let's see what many voices could do to the really make 'CHANGE'.

You may want to take a look at the OP. It's the Democrats that are pushing this petition. So, it's still that "repub vs dem crap" as you put it.

Fail.

Anyway, I can't believe with what's going on in the US, they have the time to start a stunt like this.

This is the same congress who failed to hear our voices opposing the bailout, but instead choose to go after people for voicing their opinion?
These people are nuts!
