Medics tell Press TV they have found traces of depleted uranium in some Gazan residents wounded in Israel's ground offensive into the strip.
Norwegian medics told Press TV correspondent Akram al-Sattari that some of the victims who have been wounded since Israel began its attacks on the Gaza Strip on December 27 have traces of depleted uranium in their bodies.

Effects on cells and tissue exposed to DU
...There is special significance to the word “ionizing” when describing radiation in the form of alpha and beta particles and gamma rays (photons). Alpha and beta particles are charged particles that are emitted from a decaying DU atom at speeds approaching 10% the speed of light. Because they are charged (“ionized”) they can fracture molecules without even colliding with them. The effect is similar to that observed when a magnet is brought near a pile of iron filings. The ionic charge on the radiation particle can displace bonding electrons in nearby molecules as it whizzes by, creating in its wake free radicals, DNA cleavage, etc. Because of this, one beta particle, for example, may adversely affect dozens of cells before it finally actually strikes a molecule and comes to rest. Alpha particles, being larger, don’t travel nearly so far, but they have twice the ionic charge as beta particles and are thousands of times as massive. So when an alpha particle actually collides with a molecule, the results are cataclysmic and often result in cell death and the release of dozens of free radicals into neighboring cells.
Gamma rays are not charged particles like alpha and beta particles, but are photons of electromagnetic radiation. A gamma photon must actually strike a molecule to cause damage. When a gamma photon strikes a molecule, its energy is absorbed by the electrons in the molecule, placing the molecule in an “excited state”. The molecule releases this newly obtained energy by immediately shooting a bonding electron (identical to a beta particle) into the surroundings along with another gamma ray of less energy than that of the original gamma ray. The released electron acts like any other beta particle, but it has originated some distance away from the original irradiating source of DU. The new gamma ray proceeds on its own new course until it too strikes a distant molecule and the process repeats itself. This goes on until all of the energy originally present in the first gamma ray has been used up. Thus one gamma emission from a radioactive atom can result in the production of many beta particles in a zig-zag track throughout the tissue, and each beta particle leaves its own wake of destroyed molecules.
...g. With these assumptions, we can adjust the total number of radiation events calculated in step 4 to determine the number of radiation events that actually reach surrounding tissue and cause damage:
For Alpha Radiation:
0.2% (5.2 events/sec) (60 sec/min) = 0.6 alpha radiation event per minute
For Beta Radiation:
80% (10.4 events/sec)(60 sec/min) = 499 beta radiation events per minute
For Gamm Radiation:
100% (10.4 events/sec)(60 sec/min) = 624 gamma radiation events per minute
Thus the total number of damaging radiation events to penetrate living tissue from a 0.34 mg body burden of depleted uranium will be approximately 1100 events per minute, 1.6 million events per day, or 578 million radiation events per year.
Because uranium is ubiquitous throughout the natural environment, approximately 90 :g of uranium, on average, exists in the human body from normal daily intakes of air, water and food. The biological distribution is approximately 66% in the skeleton, 16% in liver, 8% in kidneys and 10% in other tissues. Due to the presence of natural uranium, a suspected intake of depleted uranium cannot be confirmed by techniques which measure total uranium or uranium-238 only. Depleted uranium is detected by measuring relative amounts of the isotopes on samples such as urine or hair, or on a person in a whole-body counter. Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) or Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS) measurements on urine or hair are approximately a million times more sensitive than whole body counting techniques.
Allegations that Israeli forces have used chemical and biological weapons date back to the War of 1948. In March 2003, the highly-respected BBC television network presented Israel’s Secret Weapon, an investigation of Israel's development of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. The BBC reported: “The Israeli army has used new unidentified weapons. In February 2001 a new gas was used in Gaza. A hundred and eighty patients were admitted to hospitals with severe convulsions….Israel is outside chemical and biological weapons treaties and still refuses to say what the new gas was.”
"On June 10th, 2004, the two clinics in Al-Zawiya treated 130 patients for gas inhalation. The patients were children, women, old people and young men. Dr. Abu Madi related that there was a high number of cases of [tetany], spasm in legs and hands, connected to the nervous system. Pupils were dilated. … Other symptoms included shock, semi-consciousness, hyperventilation, irritation and sweating."
Thus reads a report by medical units serving the West Bank village of Al-Zawiya, where nonviolent resistance to Israel's impending wall has been extraordinarily resolute. According to the medical report (procured by the International Middle East Media Center [IMEMC]), "the gas used against the protestors is not tear gas but possibly a nerve gas."
Israel has admitted using phosphorous bombs during the war against Lebanon last summer, just days after being accused by an Italian television documentary programme of using dense inert metal missiles, which are highly carcinogenic, against the Palestinians in Gaza in July and August.
After previously claiming that phosphorous bombs were only used to mark targets, Israeli cabinet minister, Jacob Edery, has now confirmed that "the Israeli army made use of phosphorous shells during the war against Hezbollah in attacks against military targets in open ground."
Israeli occupation forces are using a brand new chemically contaminated ammunitions to finish off Palestinian resistance fighters, a Palestinian doctor unveiled.
"The Israeli forces use chemical-contaminated ammo, which makes the skin of the victim fall once touched," Dr. Mohamed El-Hashim, of the Health Department in the West Bank town of Qalqiliya, told IslamOnline.net.
A Palestinian minister accused the Israeli government of using illegal chemical weapons in the occupied territories.
"Analyses carried out in laboratories outside Palestine have shown that Israel has had recourse to banned chemical weapons and depleted uranium" in the Palestinian territories, environment minister Yussef Abu Sofia told reporters in Algiers Wednesday on the sidelines of a conference of Arab environment ministers.
Depleted uranium (DU), which is used for armor-piercing bullets or shells, is
an extremely dense and hard metal that can cause chemical poisoning to the
body, according to the Campaign Against Depleted Uranium Web site.
