Just ridiculous. Its like trying to make your house/surroundings germ free. If you give nothiing to your antibodies they cant build up a defense system. Soon people will get seriously ill just going to the shop because your immune sysytem so crap - or will you have to walk through disinfectant like you did around animals when Foot and mouth broke out. Maybe you will have to do that everwhere - the world smelling like a hospital - urghhhhhhhhhh.

I respect the no smoking rules and when I am in a smoking area and a non smoker seems to have to come an extra thirty feet to go by it , I just want to tell them quit gaggin and giving me dirty looks , you are on my turf . Really third hand ??? And now they are actually considering a fat tax too , boy glad I am skinny I am taxed enough with this habit I pitty the portly smoker. Get REAL . And have any of yall had the survey calls for smoking? another really wasted effort, asking how many people in your house smoke and then how many people live in the house . Hmmmm 5 persons in a home with 2 smokers who smoke in a single room designated . But they dont want to hear that , or that 3 are underage and not allowed in the smoking room.

I did have that happen to me with a survey call. They told me they were taking a survey on smoking, and asked if i would like to take it. I said sure. She asked me if I smoked. I said yes. She asked me if I was the only one in the house that did. I said no. She asked me how many in the house smoked. I said three. She asked how many live in the home. I said four. I said to her "Can I ask you some questions?" she wanted to know what for? I said "Well, i`m doing a survey on drinkers, and if you would, i want your home phone number so I can call you late in the evening and take my survey." She hung up.

Sheeple mentality at its finest.

actually, I think it's you who "don't get it"...the same additives that are put in the cigarettes are put in lots of other things....why on god's earth would someone think that those additives are perfectly okay as long as they are in an air freshener, or in your fabric sheets, ect....but well, are deadly to people when they happen to be in cigarettes? if they are deadly in the cigarettes, they are deadly in the other stuff also!
50 new man made chemicals a day??? that's how many applications are put to the fda!! personally, I think it's you who's the sheeple, you're willing to jump on board this little tidbit, just like that want you to, and ignore the rest of the massive problem!! the poisons are in everything! they had to get rid of all that useless crap when the refined the oil to make your gas somehow!
that's where it went!

Oh man, if only Bill Hicks were alive to see this. Might have some new material for his "non-smokers" routine.

RIP Bill. We need some clarity like yours in this day and age.

I place this under someone trying to justify their college education along the same lines as centrifugal/centripetal force argument. Yet no matter how many times I let go of the rotating yo-yo it always flies away from me and never towards me.

Your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate once saw a guy buy a pack of cigarettes, guess if you ever die then that would be a smoking related death too.

Personally I hope beyond all hope that the MSM takes this and goes on full "scare the crap out of everyone mode". Maybe then after we stop laughing at them will realize just how full of it all this has been.

And for the militant anti-smokers out there, might want to look up Prohibition and that one quote about those not learning from history are doomed to repeat it. Keep up the good work and maybe these bans will get put where they belong once and for all.

But here in the Communist State of NO-hio, a guy mentions to me that you cannot smoke within 30 feet of a building (the law does not state any sort of buffer zone by the way) as I am walking on a sidewalk. I respond calmly and flatly, "I am aware of the particulars of many laws, like the one legalizing concealed carry. Which law do you think you need to be more concerned about?"

I think that you have a very narrow view of the big picture. Smoking is one area in which the government can address your fears and play them against you. They tell you what is evil..in this case smoking..and play you like a piano.

Your car or the airplane that you just got off of pollutes more than my smoking will ever achieve yet no one is "banning" those things.

The only reason that the government went after tobacco is that they would not plat ball with Clinton. Read up on it.

Talk about being a sheep...sheesh!

I have yet to read the entire thread so sorry if this is a repeat but...

I know smoking is bad, and i don't care. In my honest opinion i would rather smoke then take the pharmaceuticals that are being pushed down everyones throats. If it took us this long to understand that inhaling smoke might kill you, how do we know that any drug is safe on a long temr basis? As for withdrawals, i know people who are taking antidepressants that they cannot quit because the withdrawals last for 3-6 months and include, "electric zaps," whatever that means.

Also if it took us this long to understand that smoking might kill you, then how about all the preservatives in our food? How do we know that will not have any long term effects?

We don't know any of this. We only know that smoking might kill you. There you go a solution to the problem of cancer and heart attacks.

Alcohol will kill you if an alcoholic but no-one cares about that. (not saying they should i am just tired of people blaming smoking for the worlds problems.)

If you want to ban something ban McDonalds, ban big pharma pushing drugs down peoples throats, ban coal plants, ban fossil fuels. Once you create a place that is safe in general then start coaching people on their habits. Otherwise let people do what they want.

I live in a city that recently enacted a smoking ban. People were saying things like "I should have a right to go in that bar without having to inhale smoke." YOU ARE GOING TO A BAR, YOU WILL PROBABLY BE DOING WORSE THINGS THAN INHALING SMOKE. Also IF YOU DON'T LIKE HOW AN ESTABLISHMENT IS RUN THEN DON'T PATRONIZE IT.

Third had smoke... What a joke.

30,000 deaths a year due to the flu
25,000 deaths a year due to drunk drivers
42,636 deaths from car crashes in 2005

To add to that in 2005 44,000 people died from overdosed to their prescription drugs.

www.betterbodyjournal.com...

Even more people die if you take into account allergic reactions, mix matched drugs. The Pharma comanies are just as big of killers as the cigarette comanies. Their guise is that they are doing good. If they are trying to do good why do the need to describe the symptoms of depression on a commercial for people to need their drug. Why does an asthma drug result in "asthma related death." yes that is a real side effect from a commercial.

Most likely smoker or not, you are going to die from something man made. Fix the whole problem not just a small part of it.

Not forgetting 'Second-Mind smoke' which is were you're thinking of having a cigarette, and your brainwaves flow through the electrically charged 'dirty air' to be read by your baby telepathically, the baby then will probably grow up to be a dangerous chain smoker.

Actually, this probably really is more dangerous than third hand smoke...

It is only a matter of time before you start to hear of 4th-hand and even 5th-hand smoke. I have never really understood the whole goverment stand on smoking. Look at all the tax money the get from the sells. If they were to lose that much money they would be in a world of hurt. It is like cutting your finger nails at the wrist. This lastest thing about 3rd hand smoke is nothing more than a bid to raise the tax even more.

Oh, Geez...puhleez! Ok, I admit I'm one of those horrible evil people who smoke. I keep my house and car clean. People come into my home and think no one smokes inside. I try not to, but that usually works better when the weather is nice. I am also respectful to those who do not like it and don't smoke in restaurants and other people's homes (unless they smoke there). Honestly, even tho I smoke, I can't stand the smell of it or the smoke in a poorly ventilated area.

These people need to get a life. I work in an office in a car repair shop. I am exposed daily to all sorts of stuff such as exhaust, gas fumes, carb and brake cleaner, the list goes on. I think the cigs aren't nearly as harmful to me as those.

And I still wanna know, all these old geezers I've known who've lived into their 90's smoking non filtered cigarettes didn't die of lung cancer - how?

They want to get rid of cigarettes because people aren't dying young enough.
All those extra chemicals they started putting into them was supposed to kill us off quicker than natural tobacco.

Considering that a positive effect of nicotine is that it helps people to THINK may have something to do with it.

Really? Seeing as how driving and industrial transportation has become all but necessary, I find it easier to blame the smokers who pollute the surrounding air for purposes of self satisfaction.

Obviously, pissing is required. Pissing on the street is or on the carpet is not.

I cant believe the lengths that society will go to. As if smokers, myself
included, are not aware that there is a residue on glass and the walls.
That why people clean their houses and cars!!

I would venture to guess that most don't care what residues are left
behind, while others don't know and some already know, so clearly
this warning is not for you. It is most likely to warn others about
people like you.

Yes, I've been to people's homes where this was neglected and it was
gross, but most people that I know and who smoke keep a clean house

Well that's just spectacular. Smokers are clean. They don't like that
yucky build up on their walls. I'm glad you cleared that misconception
up for us.

Strange and new to them, but certainly not to you. You are an experienced
smoker. The disease you will get certainly won't be strange and new
to you. But those who may care about their health and bodies, your
G'damm right it's strange and new
. They have every right to be scared
of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th hand smoke.

has the potential to get????

It's silly enough when people do something they know harms themselves
and others around them and act like they are the victim or minority.
It's a dirty, gross and addictive habit. The treatment you feel over this
is reflective of your habit. Gross and obnoxious, no?!

Smoking is the "blame all of your problems on it" vice that is a continuously
being attacked with out fail. I cant smoke in the airport, at my favorite

Waaaah, waaahhh
I can't smoke in public. Good!! Smokers have
ruined many of my meals and I can only smile knowing that my next
meal won't be ruined by an addicts selfishness. You'd light up on a plane
next to kid if you could, I bet.

Yet my car spews out more crap into the air every day than my smoking

Your car is not running in an airport or dining in your favorite restaurant.
I see the analogy you are trying to make. However there is too much
money in oil to completely resort to alternative energy. And we are all
simply expendable so they may benefit. The only reason they are scaring
you to quit is so that you may live longer and buy more oil, most likely.

Do you think that they will ban cars next??? OK, that will never happen..
it's better to take the easy way out and blame all of today's health

Nope, not a chance. But they should be less abrasive on the environment.
Agreed 100%. Also smoking has been restricted not banned. It's a New
Year, quit smoking and by a hybrid or something. Best not play the victim,
not yet anyhow.

Lemme guess!! third-hand smoke is worse than actually smoking and the only way to protect yourself is to smoke!

believe it or not I have heard people say REALLY stupid things like this in reference to secondhand smoking.

lemme break it all down for you.

1. your better off not smoking.

2. dont live in a enclosed space with constant secondhand smoke.

pretty simple for you folks? yeah, now go to bed.

this is a very easy fix folks, remember life is 100% fatal no mater what so lets start at the source, Ban life that way everyone is safe.
no more smoking
No need of gun bans
No more need to save the children
No more welfare
No more traffic
no more drunk drivers
No more wars

See how simple that is

Yes, I am a smoker, how else am I going to annoy the world without making a great deal of Noise, But I do NOT own an automobile, those things could kill you................................

They both suck! They are both gross!

It's more of a reflection of our government, not
non-smokers.

Non-smokers are not synonymous with driving
anymore than smokers are. That's ridiculous.

If I had a choice, I'd live in a world with non-smokers
and free energy.

That is surely not happening any time soon.

In the meantime, I will do my best to cut down emissions
and keep away from cancer sticks.

Perhaps we should correct the big problems instead of the small ones. Smokers don't outweigh the greater threats to our society.

Fix the greater problem and then coach people on their own. This "fix the small stuff" mentality only leads to fixing the small stuff and leaving the greater problems to do their thing.

If we provide ourselves with a world that has clean air, safe food, lower homicide rates, and so on, I will be happy to tell my neighbor that smoking is bad for me and them. Until then i will let them do whatever they want and I might join them for a smoke with my drink. Perhaps even after i eat my chemical filled meal and i take my pill that makes me happy.

Deal with it or go somewhere else. That's how it works.
