On the other hand faking his own death might be in the best interest of his followers & himself.

If they were to 'fake' his death, which is highly possible, imagine the uproar from Al-Qaeda. Someone new in command might just let loose.

It might be in the best interests of the US to keep mum on Osama's whereabouts.

If Osama is publicly anounced as being deceased at the hands of the coalition, he will become a martyr, therefore possibly making him more powerful in death than he was in real life. ie. inspiring Muslim fundamental extremism for generations to come.

It is easy to kill a human, but it is extremely difficult to kill an idea or ideaology.
