Israeli troops mobilize as Gaza assault widens

news.yahoo.com

AZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Israel widened its deadliest-ever air offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers Sunday, pounding smuggling tunnels and a central prison, sending more tanks and artillery toward the Gaza border and approving a reserves callup for a possible ground invasion.

Israeli leaders said they would press ahead with the Gaza campaign, despite enraged protests across the Arab world and Syria's decision to break off indirect peace talks with the Jewish state. Israel's foreign minister said the goal was to halt Gaza rocket fire on Israel for good, but not to reoccupy the territory.

With the two-day death toll nearing 300 Sunday, crowds of Gazans breached the border wall with Egypt to escape the chaos. Egyptian forces, some firing in the air, tried to push them back into Gaza and an official said one border guard was killed.

Hamas, in turn, fired rockets deeper than ever into Israel, near the Israeli port city of Ashdod.

Killing continues and chaos abounds as this story unfolds.Israel has the goal of stopping Hams rockets for good but not reoccupieing the territory, does that mean they plan on utter destruction of Hamas forces?

Hopefully they will stomp out Hamas for good. Only good can come from that. I don't agree with the way the current day Israel was formed, but that all took place before I was born and now they have their own country and they are doing what needs to be done.

To answer your question, yes I think they are going for the complete annihilation of Hamas. As in kill everyone that is Hamas in Gaza. Hamas wanted war with Israel and now they are going to get it and I don't think they have any clue what Israel is capable of. Now they are about to find out it seems like.

Seems like that is there only option if they go in. To leave Hamas in power will only cause similar problems in the future. Unfortunately, most of Hamas will flee to Egypt before Israel ever gets to them. Guess they can flee to fight another day. If I was Israel I would bring Abbas in and lots of food for the people.

what does THE PRESIDENT think about this? You remember him? We got like several hanging around all freakin laughing about it because they know they're safe.

has it ever occurred to anyone besides me that the palestinians and the jews are BOTH innocent?

think about that one while you decide who to blame.

this is really causing me to become very angry with the controllers of this world and their Machiavellian tactics. Open your eyes and if your solution is to wipe any human out in this equation then congratulations on earning your sheepskin.

Both sides are guilty!! I'll repeat Both sides are guilty! it's easy to for some to sit back and place blame on one side or the other from the comfort of home where you are safe and warm, but remember that real human beings are dying here this is real! and slayer is right this is going to get real ugly very quickly.

both sides have been manipulated by outsiders. who are the outsiders? because they're insane and we're insane for letting them get away with it.

it was a bad idea in 1947. it's always a bad idea when some think they have manifest destiny over people who have occupied their homes for generations.

this is stupid, it's always been stupid and the world is stupid for putting up with it.

Yup! your right, the media is controling how the world vievs the sittuation, through deceptive and distorted stories, wich in turn favors the favorite and people start "cheering" on the obviously stronger of the two and want to see the "little" guy get kicked when he's down, the problem with this analogy is that real killing is happening and the "armchair' quatrerbacks are cheering it on.

Hamas needs to get better control over his people. You guys are are taking the easy road, war is wrong, Israel should stop, the US is just watching it happen (don't get me started). This is happening right now, does this look like something that Israel is about to stop. No. Maybe they should stop, call a cease fire and start the whole thing over 6 months from now.

Israel is not going to give back the land. The Palestinians are going to be angry. Israel has a population which it is obligated to defend. Hamas has people firing rockets just after the cease fire ended. We had that thread and it is right here Palestinian rocket misfires, kills 2 girls in Gaza. Where were the people complaining about loss of life then? Yes loss of life is bad but it happens, and it is bad whenever it happens. People like to talk about the media being one sided.

People are talking about Palestinian militants being against the Israel government and Israel targeting civilians. Israel is sending in SF to hit planned targets, it's own troops on the ground. Palestinian militants are lobbing rockets over the boarder.

People will demonize the US media while directing you to watch some anti-Israel youtube video, and then insult your intelligence. Me myself, I prefer to take everything in and realize that there is not one truly unbiased media source out there.

This is not directed at the OP by the way. This is just how I see the matter. Anything resulting in military action such as this is going to result in the loss of life. The loss of life is so unbearable that I don't have words to describe it. What we must focus on is what can happen at this point given the situation.

We have a intelligent group of people here. I think it would be interesting if we had a thread in which people would pretend to be Israel and others would pretend to be Palestinians. On this thread people would attempt to work out some kind of negotiation. If it ended up in a firefight I would be quite disappointed.

Yes you are correct in that, what are your views on what could happen at this point in the situation, Israel could ground assult Hamas and send many refugees into Eqypt, or just completely wipe them out? I'mean this shows that a ground offensive is close and think about all of the innocents.

Well the Gaza has been unstable at best. In all honesty it hard to say. Democracy is great but when on party is forced to violently take control after an election it loses a bit of it's meaning. Despite who the people chose in the past I don't believe Hamas is the best leader. If he was given more power what would he do with it?

The major issue here is that Hamas was a leader who was democratically elected but do to issues in the area could not lead in a democratic manor. When the people elect a leader who is going to lead it's own people through violence then that is what they are going to get. I cannot expect Israel to sit there and take rockets because I know I would not tolerate that from my own government.

If Israel can get food to the people and secure the area then that's what needs to be done. I would rather a few thousand people be killed today for thousands more to live tomorrow, even if it was my own life that was taken. This may be a swift end to the problem rather than a conflict that would go on for years and kill more over time.

I like your idea about a thread. You should make one asking for solutions only. It would be interesting to see what members would suggest.

Yes, you are very correct when you say both sides are guilty. Innocent people are caught on both sides of the fence. However, I feel Hamas must go if there is to be a chance at peace. I don't know if militarily is the way but we may soon find out.

Thanks Jam I feel like the argument over who is right and wrong is beaten onto the ground, I think the answer to the problem would involve a cease fire agreement as well as some land being returned to Hams in exchange for complete demiliterzing of the Gaza strip for starters.

interesting how the media completely believes palestinian media...and didn't have their cameras on when all those rockets were exploding inside israel for the last 3 weeks. the palestinians are dying because hamas keeps trying to start a war with israel, and they have succeeded. my sympathy goes out to the innocent palestinians who just want peace.

I think it should be given to Jordan or Egypt as a temporary territory, kinda like Guam and Puerto Rico, in addition to the land Israel had agreed to give up in previous talks. Once Jordan or Egypt whip the place back in shape, they could hand it over to the Palestinians to run themselves. Not that yours was a bad idea, but I wouldn't give nothing to Hamas.
