well .. some activity at least gives us something to talk about..
\

Indeed this is true, something to talk about and watch, as it seems to be slowly increasing in activity over the past few days, towards the western side of the park... been monitoring several stations on GEE, and although they are small in magnitude, this does prove to be an increase in activity from the past few months.... could be leading up to something bigger, but then again, any kinda activity in a super volcano is interesting to watch

Anyone else monitoring the Yellowstone GEE stations?? seems fairly active tonight, with small eq"s in various places throughout the park...

Ummmm.... is she awakening?????

Yellowstone National Park - NASA's Landsat satellites have been tracking Yellowstone's underground geothermal activity, a deep heat that is stored 4,000 miles into the earth's core. But there are areas where these energy levels are becoming erratic. Old Faithful could be in trouble.

Up until recently, the heat coming from Yellowstone's underground magma chamber has always been the fuel for over 10,000 of the volcano's features: Old faithful, hot springs, geysers, mud spots, terraces and mud pots. But NASA is reporting that the Landsat imagery has picked up some unexpected developments outside the park's borders, also picked up by energy companies beyond the park's borders.

And then there is this....

The park had funded a study on the unexpected geothermal activity, looking for a new perspective on the developing event.

Ummm... excuse me???????

Robin/Eric ... I can't wait to see your response!

Um,yeah, something is stirring, but the government don't have the right equipment to keep an eye on things until 2013.

Nice.
Too little too late.

The Landsat satellite allows the scientists to recognize big changes occurring in the geothermal area, like Yellowstone. However, nobody knows what is happening or where due to the satellite's large pixel size in its imagery. But clues are being found regarding the interconnection of the underground geothermal events. The goal is to obtain higher resolution in future thermal data. NASA's next Landsat satellite, the Landsat Data Continuity Mission, will have a new thermal instrument on it for use in 2013 to add to Yellowstone's geothermal record. Whilst I do realize that this thread is all about Yellowstone and a super volcanic eruption ( I have been reading it since page one ...), I just wanted to say that I have just read a good book called Ashfall . Of course, I am a librarian ! It is about Yellowstone erupting and a young man's survival and consequent environmental effects of a supervocano eruption. Anyhow, more people seem to be aware of this potential catastrophe, and it shows when even a young adult book is on this topic!

I think Yellowstone is recharging with magma. There recently was some mini-swams, but now it's quieted back down. It did wake up. But only long enough to roll over and get comfortable.

for years the jelly hotspot moves north-east...would be silly to think that an next eruption would be on the same spot as 640.000 years ago......

puterman's avatar brought me to this thread, gonna start reading this monster, but just wanted to ask has anyone been looking at yellowstones seismography things today?, I am a total newb and have no idea what it means but the graphs look awfully busy. but again that could be nothing, I have no idea what Im looking at.

Thanks :-), have a good new year everyone

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Well finishing up 2011, here's the latest update. Odd that They were working New Years Days - and a Sunday to Boot ---

Yellowstone Recent Status Report, Updates, and Information Releases
YELLOWSTONE VOLCANO OBSERVATORY MONTHLY UPDATE
Sunday, January 1, 2012 12:08 PM MST (Sunday, January 1, 2012 19:08 UTC)

YELLOWSTONE VOLCANO (CAVW #1205-01-)
44°25'48" N 110°40'12" W, Summit Elevation 9203 ft (2805 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN

During the month of December 2011 (through 5:00 PM MST December 29) 68 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone National Park region. The largest was a magnitude 2.5 event on December 27 at 10:40 PM MST, located about 9 miles north of Tower Junction, YNP. A small swarm of 18 quakes located 5 miles north of West Thumb, YNP was recorded on December 8 with magnitudes from 0.3 - 1.6.

Yellowstone earthquake activity continues at normal background levels.

Slow subsidence of the caldera, which began in early 2010, continues. Current deformation patterns at Yellowstone are well within historical norms.

Please see: www.uusatrg.utah.edu... for a map of GPS stations in the Yellowstone vicinity. For a graph of daily GPS positions at White Lake, within the Yellowstone caldera, please see: pboweb.unavco.org...

@ hapablab - the instrument at Pelican Cone is not working correctly! It happenes from time to time with different insturment. They will get around to fixing it - might take till spring though

Guys and gals yellowstone is my department. Let me tell you about it. It wakes up heavily this time of year for a reason.

Also you should expect another big EQ in spring!

Of course this is my opinion of what I have to say.

Trust me dear, while you may be uptight about those instrument, they are nothing more than instrument failure. We have been here for a long time now - getting to know the mrs. we even started new threads because she went sleepy to sharpen our skills for when she awakes again. There are the Quake Watch Threads and Volcano Watch Threads. We have learned much! While I came later onto this Thread because I never knew it existed doesn't mean I haven't been watching every move for the past 10-15 years. Also, I ask you to trust me that there is a mighty fine group of Folks
here on this thread that if she were to move even the slightest with a single snore, We would be ALL OVER IT!!! We are the Quake Watcher, Volcanoe Watchers - and Keeper of Yellowstone IMHO. We even alert the paid folks various agencies to what is going on when things occur and They watch this Thread for information.. Because WE ARE THAT GOOD! - so take a chill pill and learn how to read the instruments - Puterman has a whole learning leason in his signature - or, you could read this whole entire Thread and learn more than most with degrees
Love this thread - Yellowstone Rocks!

lol, I love this reply, first I want to thank you for being so kind to me, I am almost afraid to post things because of the attacks some people can throw out lol, and second thank you for your wise input on this, it feels good to know that there are intelligent people on here who know exactly what is going on with that monster of a volcano.

What got me interested in it was a history channel documentary called "Apocalypse" lmao, they spoke about it and said where on the net I can look to see the seismographs, went there and scared the daylights outta myself, and also went to another site that made it more scary lmao,
I will stick to this site, and watch what you and puterman and all the smart ones who know what this means and I will no longer jump at a rumble, which here in Illinois I really haven't felt many, ( a little worried about the new madrid but I blame that on this site lol, read some scary threads on that one lol) though I did feel the japan one believe it or not, knocked my sugar bowl off the microwave (no one believes me but it happened the same time that quake hit)
So I will tackle this monster thread and read putermans thread too. ( I didn't know he had one on how to read the graphs!) so I am pretty excited now :-).

Thanks again and take care, have a great New Year too and many more to come!! :-)

Oh and almost forgot to add, Yellowstone DOES rock!!, and the more I read into the more I become obsessed!!
I wish the internet was out when I was younger I would of went to college to learn geology, this is amazing!
lol. its remarkable that there is such a thing as this and what it can do, and how people can walk around there knowing that its such a powerful thing and can potentially destroy this country, its frightening yet fascinating at the same time lol.

As already mentioned it's just the seismograph that went GaGa.

YS has been quite for a while now, not even a little earthquake swarm to keep us a bit busy for a couple of days.

ELE? ...whoah, damn I gotta stop watching documentaries, also that physicist Michio Kaku said it would only take out a part of North America lol, then again that was an interview on Fox News last year lol
