Does anyone know if there is any rise of volcanic gas in the park? Or any information anywhere pertaining to any volcanic gas at the park? It would be nice if we could access information on this subject. It would be especially nice if it could be accessed at the YVO web site - after all YVO should be just that!

volcano-pictures.info...

As far as I know, YVO doesn't have real-time gas measurements, but I imagine somebody would do them in cases like this. I guess we will have to wait for more information on this matter.

I would like to know (from the siesmologists at the park) how many earthquakes a day does it take to constitute a swarm? How long of a period of inactivity does it take to declare a swarm over...thats the more appropriate question at this time I guess

There's informations about that in this paper (warning though, it's rather technical):
www.uusatrg.utah.edu...

Start reading from page 5, "Swarm identification".

[edit]
Ok, I'm posting it directly:

To identify swarms in the Yellowstone catalog, an algorithm designed by Waite (1999) was used. This algorithm specifies swarms based on the inter-event times and distances based on the swarm definition of Mogi (1963). A swarm is defined if the following criteria are met: (i) the maximum of the daily number of events in the sequence (Nd) is greater than twice the square root of the swarm duration in days (T):

Nd > 2 * sqrt(T)

and (ii) the total number of earthquakes in a sequence Et is at least 10.

Jah. Watching PB.B207 on GEE and it's just one teeny little shimmy after another, about every 30 seconds to a minute.

Once the live YMR seismogram looks more like it did before the swarm, without all those little microquake bumps in it that is, you'll know it's over. As long as it's "crackling" like it is now, there's activity that needs monitoring.

I know you guys hate this kind of playing around with what should be available data!

HAARP has deleted its records from 2010-1-11

Daniel Solis 2010-01-23 23:33:37

A very unusual deletion can be observed in the archived data of HAARP
instrument readings from the day before the Haiti earthquake.
Perhaps it is a matter of time until it will get fixed with a simple copy-paste
operation, but I have made screen shots of it).

Set the date in "Chart Archives" below the today's graph to 2001/Jan/
11 in the window below the graph and see for your selves. It is the only
instance of such an occurrence I have discovered by looking through
other historical dates. Perhaps some other deletions have already been
fixed, I can think of date like May 12th 2008 or December 26th 2004.

Just a glimpse of the page linked shows this guy has done his homework on the subject.

Also check patents related to HAARP to understand the technology of
reversed piezoelectric effect in which earth can tremble when energy
is applied to ionosphere. Scientific references will be underlining
this further in this post: The patents are from greater part owned by
a LARGE defense contractor:

Alright,it's too technical for me! Just wanted to let you know that someone on the other side of the fence,so to speak,is having the same frustration that some of you here are experiencing.

Maybe this will be useful for future reference! It couldn't hurt!

Here's a geologist's opinion about the current (and apparently waning) earthquake swarm:
A little bit of Yellowstone earthquake perspective

I've also tried to make more advanced charts with Gnuplot. There's much room for improvement, but I much more can be done compared to OpenOffice Calc. In the bottom two charts, the clearer are the colors, the more recent are the earthquakes.

If I understand correctly, the caldera’s surface layer is moving ever so slowly to the southwest over the underlying magma chamber. Stands to reason, I think, that the greatest concentration of tectonic seismic activity would be at the point of that surface plate making contact with the southwesterly lip of the chamber. While this area could see magma related seismic activity, I see no reason to doubt that the current seismic swarm is tectonic in nature as the more knowledge state. Now presumably this is less worrisome than a magma related event but whom really knows?

That last one was just shy of 3.

The swarm may well be waning... But it sure aint' over.

Yeah, everything was pretty quiet then it starts to bubble until, crack, a small quake releases the pressure then quietens down again.

I know people say there is no magma movement but that is how that last one looked to me. Like a pressure cooker just allowing enough steam out to keep on going quietly.

This just in, somebody woke up the Earth, standby to be busy, right up to the "State of the Union ", check the 24 hr heliplots, they are starting to hummmmm.... Been too quiet, for too long I think, Just a hunch, and right now hunche's are looking as good as anything else. Time to avoid any poorly constructed concrete structures for awhile....

typical continouing stress on the rocks... pressure building up till it releases....
i'll keep with my opinion that magma doesend have to flow to build up pressure so no harmonic is to see...

But what causes the stress on the rocks? Isn't this tectonic movement due to the fact that all this rock is 'floating' on a sea of magma?

is there data of temp. chancing in the soil located at the EQ airia..

I can imagine if magma gets hotter it expands moore....

magma gets it feed from underneath if pressure raises there it will also be at the top were its blocked by the rock...but without flowing...

recenyly they discouverd that the chamber is filled 20% moore than they expected... perhaps its filled up already...

Thanks for the info. That is what I meant with my pressure cooker analogy. The activity leading up to the 2.9 reminded me of a lid on a boiling pot of water when it rattle around on the rim before the water pressure builds enough for the water to break through.

I think another M2.9-3.0 just occurred.
Hmm... we are getting close, energy-speaking, to the last big swarm.
