Other minor earthquakes have been added.
It looks like those in the lake area occurred in the West Thumb section, so apparently not directly related to the first 2008-2009 EQ swarm location.

I went ice-fishing today and was glad to get away from the computer so I couldn't check the webicorders. When I got home I was glad to see that it was "All Quiet on the Western Front". It seems there was about dozen or more quakes in the flurry. I noticed the quakes in the lake were to the west as you've noted. It wasn't exactly easy getting Yellowstone out of my mind whenever the ice cracked. And the wiggling tip of my pole remind me of the up and down movements of the instrustment that marks the lines on a siesmograph. But when the fish are biting, it was easy to forget everything else.

The lake I was on made me think of Yellowstone lake. There's almost nothing more beautiful that a snow covered lake. Rock outcrops make it seem like another planet sometimes, and the expanse of nothing but snow, creates a feeling you're actually on a shimmering white desert. I wish they had a webcam at the lake. Well, there's reason to hope, they've got that stimulus money.

Man - I haven't seen a monitor like this before at YS!

This one and others have been pretty intense today.

lol It may be just me, but I think it looks kinda neat when it does that. Anyway, yeah, it's actually pretty common for it to do that, especially at locations like Mary Lake, since it's subject to high winds. And considering the storms that are happening here lately... it's not a surprise. The wind has been pretty insane. Not enough to get knocked down or anything, but enough to lodge random bits of dirt in your eye at inconvenient times.

"We're going to need a bigger boat." Err, I mean they're going to need a bigger graph. The USGS gauging station (sorry I'm Canadian, that's the way we spell it) at Yellowstone Lake has shown an accerlerated increase. At the rate of the current trend it should be breaking the 700 cfs level in a few days. Snow is in the forecast.

Dear Questioningall, I have seen this pattern before and read that it could be wind because it's on a hill. But the winds on the Weather channel have them to be light. I have no talent at deciphering the graphs accurately. The person to ask is Shirakawa.

There's one other interesting point about the water levels. The Yellowstone Lake swarm had with it a corresponding rise in lake levels and outflow. During the latest flurry of activity, several of the quakes were in the lake. And just like the Dec/Jan event, we see a rise in levels immediately after quakes in the lake. Of course most of this rise is due to melting after some warmer weather, but I don't believe it accounts for all of it. There is signs of great flucuation when the quakes began in lake. I don't believe it's coincidental.

I came across this video which might be of interest to a few here. Its very long but if you start off at about the 1 hour mark you will see the relevance.

Medium-low frequencies gradually blending into higher ones, with an irregularly (chaotically) changing pattern over time and no definite spikes. It also sounds like wind when played at a fast speed... considering the very bad weather (heavy snow, etc) it has to be wind!

This spectrum section of YML, Yellowstone is from today, from 0:00 to 18:30 MST:

This, instead, is how light volcanic tremor is supposed to look on spectrum, from the current unrest at Redoubt, Alaska (spikes are occasional little earthquakes or electronic noise), as constant and definite low broadband frequencies (usualy peaking at 3.5-5 hz) eventually waning over time:

Awesome info and just as I thought. hehe Thank you Shirakawa for the great info. And that was awesome, the spectrum. I've never seen anything like that! It's interesting to see various forms of analysis.

Hi QA,

actually they showed even more extreme traces back in December at the time of the swarm, especially on that particular webicorder. The page from Dec 29, 2008 is a good example.

Since then they have been much quieter, which made me wonder that apparently there hasn't been much in the way of strong winds in that area for a couple of months or so -- and there also hadn't been much in the months prior either.

Wind might explain a fair part of it, but I'm doubtful that it's the whole story.

Regards,

Mike

NOW - this is VERY INTERESTING!!!!!!!

Connected somehow ......... but not saying ANYTHING?

Explosion is city............ no explaination for it............. evacuating people????? HHMMM.......................

First here is a map of Bozeman..........

maps.google.com...:en-us:IE-Address&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7SUNA&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=us&ei=Mkqx SZ3dHI-Etge0kozEBw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=title

now here is what is VERY INTERESTING regarding Bozeman:

link to article: www.montanasnewsstation.com...

U.S. Senator Max Baucus has issued a statement about Thursday morning's devastating explosion in downtown Bozeman that leveled Boodles restaurant and destroyed other businesses in the area.

"Like all Montanans, I was shocked to learn of the explosion in downtown Bozeman. I pray that no one got hurt in the accident, and have full confidence in the emergency crews that have responded to the scene. Right now, my staff and I are working quickly to gather more information and determine where the federal government might be of assistance in this matter," Baucus said.

The explosion is believed to have originated at Boodles on Main Street. The explosion rocked the city shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday and could be felt in businesses surrounding the area.

Several businesses in the area have been destroyed. As far as we know, Boodles, Rocking R bar, the American Legion and Lilly Lu children's were destroyed.

No casualties have been reported at this time. Authorities are releasing no details yet on injuries.

Authorities have issued evacuations in the area.

Nothing in it says WHY IT OCCURED!!!! So why DID IT OCCUR? WHY EVACUATING PEOPLE?

The explosion in Bozeman was a natural gas explosion. Evacuations were to ensure no more injuries occurred because they had difficulty shutting off the gas and also because of air quality concerns. www.kxmc.com...

Update, found another article on explosion.

says natural gas, but then also says........... authorities are "looking" at a natural gas line...........

City officials were centering their investigation on a 12-inch gas line that runs a half-block north of Main Street, although the exact cause was still unknown.

bozemandailychronicle.com...

So they are looking at it,,,............ still does not say "For sure".... also what caused the 12" main line to burst then?...........

to me all questions..........

Sorry, my timeline of events is probably off here... so this explosion in Bozeman, MT happened yesterday morning?

Hmmm... and the 4.2 quake happened not too far from Bozeman, MT but this morning?

If it were the other way around, I would say that the quake cracked a natural gas line which led to the explosion. But it looks like the opposite, so it must be coincidence, of course. Pilot light went out or something... yeah, that's the ticket.
