red dots are non QCed data points I believe

What does "non QCed" mean?

I think he means "non quality-checked" or just raw data until it's reviewed.

Did anyone else see all that SHAKING of Old Faithfuls webcam at 3:08 est?

It shook for a few secs! The webcam shows that whole area completely full of steam - it is like a fog over the whole area. It is very thick today, it seems to have double the amount of steam.

I looked at the monitor there, but am not seeing any vibrations on it, but the webcam definitely went back and forth for a few secs.

Ye I was also wathing the cam there. My internet connection is really really good 100/100 (Sweden Halleluja) and I am very sure there was something going on either very strong wind or ground shaking.

hasn't been reviewed by the UT or USGS staff yet ... if you check the online ascii listing (below) you'll see the red are labeled "rrr" ,meaning Reviewed (i believe) , while the blue are labeled "ppp", meaning Preliminary (i suppose ..)

quake.wr.usgs.gov...

bear in mind that each GPS reading as an error bar of approx 5mm ... ( i believe it depends on the GPS satellite constellation configuration at time of reading) , [somebody want to jump in with better info ?? ] among other factors ... so don't panic if a single reading looks bad ... U need at least several days reading to be sure U have established a new trend (lies , damned lies, & statics ..)

This thing with the camera moving has been talked about before on this thread a few times. But briefly: the camera is attached to a tree. If the tree moves a little in a breeze, the camera will move, and especially if it's focused on something a bit distant then the picture moves. The more distant, the more the camera appears to move.

There have been times on this thread when people have commented on the camera movement and suggested it must be due to a quake, but none of the people in the images are at all affected at those times (as they would be if the ground were shaking), because it's just minor movement of the tree.

Beats me why they decided to mount a camera 20 feet up on the trunk of a tree but they did. Maybe it was seen as better than building a less "green" structure.

Regards,

Mike

I have a simple question for someone way more smarter than me, do ash clouds tend to disipate away from the poles towards the equator over time? Will the north Alaska slope be sunny a place to build a resort after a super eruption?

I am pretty sure it woud have more to do with the jet stream and the highs and lows pushing it around.

I think what i know of that we do not know since it has not happend before. Please download the BBC movie Supervulcano and see what they think.

My guess is that we will have a new mini iceage with temp. drops of 20-25 degrees celcius all over the world. After that the world will look totally different and desserts etc will change place.

But what about the resort, no topless beaches?

Edit : no really, do ash cloud from other volcanoes drift to the equater?[edit on 19-1-2009 by MoronMan]

LKWY is down this morning.

YTP has been full of little spikes all night/morning.

Probably we won't get an EQ map update until tomorrow, today is a holiday.

Eventually it would...there is a mixing of Tropical Jet Streams near the Equator...part of this is what helps Hurricanes to Form.

I seriously doubt it. Super-eruptions occur around once every 100,000 years on earth. They are a regular fact of life, in geologic time, and you never hear about this or that species that went extinct because of this or that volcanic eruption, with the exception of the mantle plume eruptions in Siberia and India that likely contributed to the mass extinctions 250 and 65 million years ago.

You hear about a genetic bottleneck caused by Toba erupting 70,000 years ago, but if a super-eruption were anywhere close to as bad as the Yucatan comet strike, we'd be able to point to many, many species that died out as a result of Toba.

Did ash from Mt. St. Helens go north of that latitude? Or longitong(SP)?

It went toward the equator over time, right?
