I just did a quick and dirty look at the elevation data at the northern end, It's tilting slowly upward. Yeah I think we've got some tilt action going on with the caldera.

You need to realize that what you see on Google Earth is a mosaic of satellite photos pieced together from many years of flyovers. Heck, I can look at my office right now and see that buildings that were built there several years ago do not yet show up on Google Earth! Just a nice cow path right where a building now sits!

The images you see are NOT real-time. They're just there for reference so you can see the basic terrain. It takes a LONG time to photograph the entire earth with high detail

So never imagine that you're seeing anything up to date when you look at the satellite shots shown in Google Earth. What you're seeing at any given location could be photos from several years ago. They just stitch things together. Sometimes you see blatant wintertime butted up against obvious summertime as the available sections are pieced together.

Still, it's pretty amazing, and neat to be able to see the terrain for any given place.

Tilt?? How much? What is happening? I believe last year there were 1000 EQ's at YS. Are we not already close to that number now? 900+ ???

I've visited this thread numerous times, and unfamiliar with some of the terminology, I sometimes jump in when nuances of scientific measurements are being discussed.

Is the shoreline of the lake changing/tilting?

In layman's terms, please.

Most have said their is either...a sinking/deflating tilt to the southern end of the lake OR as he's infering a rise/inflation of the northern end...which would fit if swarm has been moving S to N possibly from movement of magma/fluid/gas toward the mushpots...

That's the million dollar question. I could hope it's just water/hydrothermal changes, but even the paid folks can't tell us (or maybe won't tell us) if magma is moving. It makes me wonder if there a 'push' upwards in the northern area past the lake though.

Well maybe get ready for a BIG BURP from The Mush Pots if it's Gas sliding up that way

Can't other geologists get in there and check or are just government people allowed? We need to know if it's magma moving !!!

If we all pitch in to bail out Mr Sanders maybe he could tell us

Seems like we have some additions to Yellostone Fri EQ list as well. I see a m3.3 late Friday now, that is above the norm we have seen over the last week and I don't recall seeing that one before.

That one showed up great on most of the webicorders on Friday. Friday was a "good day" for actual earthquakes.

Not much wind, so the background was clean, and some very clear, real EQs.

Here's my animated GIF of all of the Yellowstone area webicorders for Friday.

You can see the one in question as the largest "red" one.

The thing is the tilt, if you will is in very small (for the most part) movements.

Picture a large kettle with a flat lid, filled with oatmeal. Rather than heat it all at once you heat one side of the kettle while cooling the other side. As the oatmeal heats up it starts to boil and 'rise,' pushing up that hot side of the kettle's lid.

Now if the oatmeal is thick and with little water it may not even lift the edge of the lid off the rim much, but it will raise it some. Tilting the whole thing.

Now if the oatmeal is really soupy that lid is going to go up and down like mad, with rapid changes in height.

If you glue the lid down with really soupy oatmeal in the kettle and then heat the bottom of it, it will blow the lid off in time, but first it will deform the lid/kettle.

Now Yellowstone's Caldera is the lid of a magma pot...
So any changes in a very short time are worrying.

I'm sure they would let in other 'certified' geologists into the areas to look.
After all the more minds looking at a problem would make for more data.

It likely will look like a USGS/Geologist convention there fairly soon if not now.

Nice analogy...oatmeal...everyone can understand that

@VX-7R Well it's nice to know even when USGS was holding out we were seeing these things and tracking them knowing something was going on even through their silence about all of it...good 4 us!!!!

Oh yeah is that area covered by web cams?
It'd be spooky to watch if it were.

Lots of faults in that region too... I'd rather see a gas eruption/belch than say magma creeping sideways (diking?) along the fault.

I believe most of us would like to see the the minimal burp/geyser scenerio only time will tell. But those charts will give Shirakowa & Mushy something to study later

Is there somewhere that shows the actual number of earthquakes that've happened at YS (other than here
) I'd like to see the "actual" number. 900+ was just posted above,is that right??!!

earthquake.usgs.gov... past 7 days

neic.usgs.gov... past 8-30 days

If you load the data into Open Office Calc, under paste special, you should be able to get it in a table format. then you tell the OOC to sort the data by state

Enjoy
