Installing GEE (Global Earthquake Explorer) in Ubuntu 8.04 (gnome 2.22.3 desktop)

Be sure you have sun-java6-jre package installed using the synaptics package manager (approx 30M)

Click on “Places”
Click on “Home”
Create a new folder called “gee”

Download tar.gz from www.seis.sc.edu...
Extract and put folders “bin” and “lib” in your newly created “gee” directory

Make a new text file called GEEstart in your home directory (the same directory you have your new gee folder in) and edit it as follows:

#!/bin/bash
cd gee/bin
export GEE_HOME=/home/lernmore/gee
./gee

(be sure and replace lernmore for your own name/account)

open a terminal, (Applications, Accessories, Terminal) type the following

chmod +X GEEstart

(that makes it executable)

Click on the new GEEstart file in your home directory and select Run

note: There may be an easier way to get it to run, but I couldn't get it to take editing profile or .profile. , and it was a no-go "out of the box".

You get the idea...

I may not know enough about volcanoes to be able to contribute to this thread, but I can help with this.

You need to create an account with a photo storage site that allows hotlinking ~ I happen to use and like photobucket.com ~ and upload your pics there and link to them.

thanks! will do!

Ok I'm doing the blink bit with YPP & YLT and the YLT site does show similar activity to YPP. But it's not immediately noticeable. Mind you its not a perfect match, but since YPP has cleared up a bit, it can be matched against it.

Maybe a new feature, maybe not, but *shrug.*

yes - it looks so odd - those tear drop drips every quarter inch or so

you know what would be really helpful ... ahem ... mr. homeland sec. or intern at utah.edu or usgs... could you put up some sort of blog or commentary on these oddities.

We're now at a point where we've been staring at your colored lines and GEEs blue squigglies so long, we actually do notice abnormalities - even with these distortions and down times... so could you just give up and tell us what's going on... Think of us as free researchers... remember your gov funding is evaporating like everyone else's, you need us

A very good point. How hard would it be to take one of these grad students, give them a blogspot blog, and update with useful info like: (theoretically) "You may have noticed some strange behavior on YPP today, it seems to be malfunctioning, we think it's just responding to the wind. We're going to take it down between 0x:00 and 0x:00 tomorrow for maintenance, so don't be surprised if it goes down for a while."

Or you know, an update on LKWY - since it's being watched all over the world.

This whole wait three days for an official generalized dispatch thing is going on as if the data isn't out there for everyone to obsess over. Look at it like the weather - sure, there's the National Weather Service. But there are also plenty of other respected meteorologists and people who just check their site for data, and use their data for their own sites. If a major piece of weather equipment (like radar) were to suddenly go out in the middle of a big weather system you can bet people would expect (and probably receive) an explanation. If it were to suddenly wig out and show a huge approaching storm that weren't actually there, they'd get the word out right quick.

The way the USGS sits on this stuff is breeding an atmosphere of distrust and paranoia. While there's a 99.99% chance nothing is going to happen, it's difficult to trust them when the communication is so poor and old fashioned.

on the other hand, if they're really worried, what else can they do?

maybe they can't warn about downtimes - because they're not doing them? Or maybe because they don't want to be caught in a lie - better to just be unclear. For example, if they are withholding info about worrisome activity - it may look better than directly lying about it.

Robert Smith has announced he's concerned. That's enough for me.

...what if...they want us to be worried. Maybe they are trying to spread fear, panic...in all areas - economy, health, politics (war), natural catastrophies...maybe that is the plan. And we are just helping them...

As much as its as valid as any hypothesis, I think we can look to the the stance they took with Sanders. He's a perfect example of the fear-mongering that would be 'acceptable.' The sad thing is if YS goes off in say the next week, he's elevated to cult hero, rather than just a laughingstock. But, the US Government said. "Down boy" and took legal measures.

So if it's fear they wanted, they would have left him up and let him do his thing.

My favorite quote from Men In Black.

K: A person is smart, a mob is not.

(I may have abused the quote slightly.)

Probably unrelated ....

Yellowstone Valley Electric

About 700 homes south of Laurel were without power for about two hours today due to an outage at the Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative's south Laurel substation.

The power to the substation is supplied by NorthWestern Energy through a transmission line that was disrupted, said Terry Holzer, general manager at Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative.

The power went out at about 2 p.m. and was restored at about 4 p.m.

The outage was the second in the past 30 days. The first occurred in mid-December.

Long as everybody makes a ton a money, it's all good, right?

Carefull to stay on topic here and don't get me started but,
what about YML, YMP and YSB?
What is up with those? I seen it come up a while ago but thought I better refresh, not much said there. Enjoy the speculating!

Gad, there's so many things it can be always.....
I'm bald from pullin' ma' hair out! LOL
Wind or tremor? NPS guy or U of U dude? Bigfoot or Moose? Etc, Etc,..

edit to add:
We are already scared to death! That's why we vote the way we do.
If people are here at least maybe they question the "official" news.

I won't quote Benjamin Franklin here, you can look him up if ya want.
(We're gettin' off topic but a good one nonetheless)
Thanks for all your opinions, ain't this fun!

I was wondering if we're fueling or dousing the fire too. But information is always power and it seems to me that it's conspiracy sites that got saturday's yahoo news article. obviously some editors still want to keep the story alive - somehow.

I also like it that we don't just let people get away with boldfaced lies or blackouts. Look at the scandals lately - I think that people are getting more skiddish - but just because we're all paranoid doesn't mean they're not after us
For some reason, I want to know they're coming. Not sure how it will help - but I don't like surprises.

If Yellowstone is in serious trouble and there is a gag order on Robert Smith (I'm sure Yahoo news wanted to interview him - he's been THE spokesperson in every other article.) Maybe he just said he wasn't going to sugar coat it. Maybe he's had enough time to review dec 26- jan 1st data and he's not willing to be as noncommittal to the press as HSec would like? I mean, right now, a panic would be the last thing they want. Right? Maybe they want to wait for poor Obama? Or maybe it's HAARP and they can make it wait for Obama? But if it is just natural, think of what just the threat (not even the volcano) would do, on top of the econ crisis (although it might make the middle east stop and hug each other?)

All I can say is, do you all remember that May 9th 2007 exec order - that would let Bush stay in power - please - please let this not be what this is about

Interesting story? Related? Yes it is! No it's not! Yes it is! Oh huh.
You decide. Just weird stuff and freaked alot of people out anyway
thinking it was earthquakes or military testing! Story is kinda fishy.

Doing a quick comparison of YSB to other sites, I think I can say 14:13 and 15:07(ish) there were quakes, I've not looked outside of YS yet.

The only quake for 21:12 (Utc time) was a 1.4 In Denali, AK , then there were three more quakes that were scattered across the globe.
A 3.3 in Puerto Rico didn't even register. (21:45ish) Figure 5 minutes travel time aprox. With no sign of 'ringing' either.

22:07.30 (utc time) there were no global quakes of any significance, so that one likely was a localised quake (to the park) of about 1.2(ish)

It wasn't as interesting as other bits going on today I am afraid

I've got GEE up and running now, thanks to whoever put up the tips about adding each station and channel individually, on the WY network. It's going to take a while to get used to what I'm seeing though, it's such a different view.

Excellent find! Gotta love the comments

But that doesn't sound good to me. Does anyone know where these are on a map - in relation to continuation of fault lines?

Mountain Home or Twin Falls County or Magic Valley - these are all in Idaho?

Hey - if we could see the Pwaves from the Indonesian earthquakes last week - I don't see why these 2 can't be connected.
