U.S. Refuses to Join U.N. Call to End Anti-Homosexuality Laws

www.christianpost.com

UNITED NATIONS – Alone among major Western nations, the United States has refused to sign a declaration presented Thursday at the United Nations calling for worldwide decriminalization of homosexuality.

In all, 66 of the U.N.'s 192 member countries signed the nonbinding declaration — which backers called a historic step to push the General Assembly to deal more forthrightly with any-gay discrimination. More than 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality, and in several of them homosexual acts can be punished by execution.

Contrary to the title,it isn't just the US that is upset about this...

More than 50 countries opposed to the declaration, including members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, issued a joint statement Thursday criticizing the initiative as an unwarranted attempt to give special prominence to gays and lesbians. The statement suggested that protecting sexual orientation could lead to "the social normalization and possibly the legalization of deplorable acts" such as pedophilia and incest.

The declaration also has been opposed by the Vatican, a stance which prompted a protest in Rome earlier this month.

A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the Roman Catholic Church opposed the death penalty and other harsh repression of gays and lesbians, but he expressed concern that the declaration would be used as pressure against those who believe marriage rights should not be extended to gays.

Everyone against this seems to be in agreement over why it shouldn't go ahead;fear of what might happen if homosexuals are protected from being tortured and/or executed because of their sexuality.

The Islam faction has mentioned pedophilia and incest. Why? Those things have no connection to homosexuality whatsoever. And the Catholics are worried that gay marriage may become legal.

Sound reasoning,i don't think so!

How very sad that in this day and age that people still do not understand the major differences between homosexuality and pedophilia, and that people will stand by and let others be discriminated against just because of thier own irrational fears.

How embarrassing and shameful that the US stands WITH countries and other entities who embrace religion in their government to control their people. :shk:

I was about to post that.

Here we are, fighting the "terrorists" on one hand, and embracing the same backwards laws as them with the other. We're just carrying a different book.

Hey this is an opportunity! Finally we have something that the right wing Christian extremists in the US and the radical Islamic extremists agree on.

Where do we go from here?

Its very very informative and reveals truly where the US stands, and they stand with. But then I've known that for some time, oppressive systems have long interested them. Though they do double speak with the people, they set up the worst regimes including in the middle east.

And we all know the reason for that.
Some Christians want church and state to be one entity, that way they can force their will on others with impunity.

This is not a civil rights issue.

This is a moral issue.

Gays, quite frankly, start your OWN religion and make marriage between homosexuals and lesbians the OFFICIAL version of your marriage.

There is no reason to piggy-bank off Christians and try to break down their religion.

It's absurd, offensive, and reckless. And it also shows a lack of respect for others.

You should just create your own religion. There is no reason to try and hijack Christian philosophy of marriage.

Create your own, new philosophy of marriage which is between 2 males or 2 females.

Now, the United States has bigger problems which I hope they settle before they settle an elective issue such as homosexual marriage.

Such as, the war on drugs. Which is single-handedly destroying the minorities in this country.

Many homosexuals who are tortured and/or executed are not of the same religion. In countries were state and religion are one, your own faith counts for nothing,it is not the law of the land.

Homosexuals should not have to start their own religion in order to stop themselves from being persecuted.Women have not done that, black people have not done that, asians have not done that so why should homosexuals?

Torturing and executing what? You lost me.

Homosexuals should not have to hijack the sacred marriage philosophy between one man and one woman.

Women, African Americans, Asians....explain the connection between the homosexual movement? I don't see it, it's an apples to oranges comparison.

Gays want a Christian marriage...

but please, take some more time, thoroughly thinking out your next post I have a hard time reading your thoughts.

No they don't. They want a state marriage. Marriage CAN be religious, but it's a LEGAL union. This isn't about religion. It's about equal marriage rights and equal protection under the LAW.

Doesn't seem difficult to do.
Homosexuals are tortured and killed in many African and Middle Eastern countries.

Homosexuals should not have to hijack the sacred marriage philosophy between one man and one woman.

This isn't a thread about gay marriage, this is a thread about people being persecuted,by violent means.Do try and keep that in mind.

African Americans
Pretty sure i said black people.
Black people, women, asians etc have all been persecuted and the defense of such action has been religion.None of these groups have started their own religions to escape persecution. So,i ask again, why should homosexuals?

but please, take some more time, thoroughly thinking out your next post I have a hard time reading your thoughts.

Maybe you should re-read the OP.

No, it's a physiological issue. Moral assumes both good and bad, and also assumes choice. These issues do not factor into homosexuality. Ya is what ya is, and there will come a day pretty soon where your opinions will be be considered right up there with Jim Crow.

But it is a shame to see it out there in print.

here's why you are wrong:

if they simply wanted "state" (government) rights, they could get a civil union, which provides the same legal benefits, correct or not?

so, why are you fighting for "marriage" and not "civil unions"?

you are fighting to wed, to marry each other, right or wrong?

Homosexual's are not tortured and killed in civilized, modern, society. What occurs in the jungle is the jungle's business.

In the jungle, of course, not in society. In the jungles, much worse happens the torture, my friend. Take it from me. Much, much, worse.

Say African next time. Care to offer some evidence, where this is occurring most, (The Horn of Africa?) where? South Africa?

What do you suppose we do about it?

You think Saddam prosecuted gay's in Iraq? I am sure he did, so does the United States get credit from homosexuals? No, because the United States never does anything good, we are, despite our best efforts, always a disappointment to the homosexuals

but please, take some more time, thoroughly thinking out your next post I have a hard time reading your thoughts.

I will do.

Linking IQ with political views/voting records is a better gauge than physiology which is not very well understood.

From my perspective, there is much more than just good or bad. And I don't believe I chose who I love, I'm not that foolish.

I' like to think fate decides.

Which opens up the discussion.

Some? That seems like an extreme overstatement. I don't know any Christian who wants that type of government, and I live in the US. Maybe you meant to say five Christians want church & state to merge?

Incorrect.
In America married couples receive over 1,400 rights and protections, those in a civil union, whether gay or straight,do not.

Homosexual's are not tortured and killed in civilized, modern, society. What occurs in the jungle is the jungle's business.

So these so called 'civilized' countries should ignore what happens in the 'jungle?' The whole point of the UN is to protect peoples human rights,no matter where they are from.

Say African next time.

Why? Are Africans the only black people in the world?

Care to offer some evidence, where this is occurring most.

Joining the UN's call to end anti-homosexuality laws would be a step in the right direction.

I am glad we didn't sign it.

We are our own sovereign nation, we should have ZERO say in what other countries do, unless their actions directly affect our country. The UN as a premise is absolutely preposterous in terms of American sovereignty and our Constitution.

With that said, it's deplorable that we, as a nation, haven't outlawed these types of anit-homosexual laws for our own country.
