As a northwest native, I don't live too far from Mt Baker.

We have cameras everywhere, and here is a link to a Mt Baker Cam.

Looks normal to me.

There was some interest in Mount Baker last year. The news article is gone now, but a snippet on another site was found:

Mount Baker - Something is Happening
May 1, 2007 | Seattlepi.com

Mount Baker is attracting attention. Not because an eruption is imminent, but because there is some activity beneath the volcano and a lack of understanding about it. A major eruption at Mount Baker would impact millions of people in Seattle and nearby communities. Scientists at Western Washington University are conducting field work and monitorning supported by a National Science Foundation Grant.

The month before this there was another article published: Geologists Study Beneath Mount Baker

Maybe something is building up in there.

Fantastic stuff thank you, trawling internet and Edu Archives...

For all I found this which is interesting:

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND VULNERABILITY ANALYSIS(HIVA)
Walla Walla County, Washington
Mount Baker erupted in the mid-1800's for the first time in several thousand years. Activity at steam vents (fumaroles) in Sherman Crater, near the volcano's summit, increased in 1975 and is still vigorous, but there is no evidence that an eruption is imminent.

Walla Walla HAZA Doc PDF

Got to like the Walla Walla name as much as mentioned earlier, should be in Australia m8

This doc though is dated in 2003. So if since 1975 the summit has been very active with the steam vents until then, who knows what the situation is like now, maybe there is steam escaping under the ice as described by the original OP, not seismic activity or an Lava Eruption but a heating of part of the cap and ice and melt.

But with the great responses so far does not look like, but we do need before we say all is well for sure to get a complete 360 degree report on it now and hopefully from the Air too.

... mmm this just posted:

What a Star thank you very much, and one for you too

I just was posting look above about the steam vents...

So what side is that of the Mount?

The Steam vent being shown in your time spaced Pics, is that normal to see them on the Top of The Mount from such a distance?

Do you know if that is the

Sherman Crater?

Certainly cant see a bald patch there.

Thank you again soo much, looking forward to your reply my friend.

So cool thank you, so you are seeing it then from the North east side.

Good pics but with the lighting and distance It is difficult for me to tell if there an Bald patch, but with your Pics and also a previous one it can be safely said that:

So The North and North Eastern Side look normal as can be, with no apparent melt so far or any Bald patches on the Snow/Glacier.

The sunset pic is wonderful
English Bay is that your boat to?
...........................................................................................................

Please guys post which side you can of the mount the N/S/E/W otherwise we call think there is nothing to this and have 20 reports of just one side of the Mountain and the other is showing signs of melt

WE well ATS and I would chuck this back to the original Poster for him, on This thread opening link, will either Debunk this in great ATS style, revealing the truth, or have a world exclusive on our hands by this time tomorrow.

Elf.

Edit for link and removal of self aggrandisement lol.

On a note unrelated to the thread topic, but relevant to all of us up here in this region, BRRRR!!!! How freaking unbelievable is it for us to have this crystal clear sky, almost no haze, bright sun all day, and sub freezing high temps? The wind coming down Snoqualmie Pass this morning had the valley experiencing single digit wind chill, but to look out the window you'd have sworn it was a beuatiful fall day.

It does look I must admit very stunning in that entire area, wow is all I can say.

And as you say it looks pleasant not cold...

We have Freezing Fog at the moment of my part of the UK

The thing I am having trouble with is figuring out what side of the mountain all of these cams and the few recent pics that have been posted are being gathered from. It seems like a lot are looking east/northeast towards the mountain from the west/southwest. I guess I'm just wondering if we are missing an angle (e.g. looking west towards the mountain from a point east of it) and therefor are not seeing the area of the potential 'melt.

I'm from California so I don't know the area too well and am just guessing.

Per my other post, can you tell me what direction these pics are being taken from? It seems like the steam pictured is coming from the far side of the mountain so I am curious as to where you were when these were taken/what side we are seeing.

Thanks for posting the pics btw...those are great even at that res. That is one beautiful mountain.

Soo close great for info, and sounds great, hope the snow isn't to bad...

So what face side can you see my friend?

Elf

It was too dark for me to get a shot by the time I got home today, but here's one from Mt. Vernon - probably about 30 miles as the crow flies. So my Camera is looking North East which would make this the the South West side of Mt. Baker - I think. Looking towards Canada. Appears to be the opposite side of the other posters picture.

Steam vents in our area are common activity such as this one of Mt Baker.

Here is a tour within a Mt Rainier Steam vent and a view at the top of the crater itself.

What is news to some, is standard day activity to others. Minor tremors, and steam vents, are common here as we are on a fault line.

You can be assured, that if there was activity that endangered the lives of the people of this region, it would be all over the news. Events such as an eruption dont just happen all of the sudden. There are warning signs and events that lead up to the activity itself.

Lastly, Wiki had a shot from the South East on their site. A marked different look.

I live in a town called Bellingham of about 80k pop., due West of Baker, less than 100 clicks. I think we would know by now if ANYTHING was going on there, as someone it seems is always watching. As far as getting pics from the East looking West to Baker, good luck. There aren't any significant inhabited areas in the direct Eastern side of the mountain, due to the fact it is mostly a rugged mountainous area. Unless someone has a death wish, people generally stay away from trying to go 'backcountry' until June or July, as people tend to disappear every year hiking on the Eastern side of Baker known as Artist's Pointe, even in the height of the Summer hiking season...

To give you an idea how remote this area East of Baker is, it wasn't too many years ago that they found a missing WWII bomber that had been lost since '45(?), found in that same Artist's Pointe area. Not sure of the year it was found, tho.

Best bet to see anything, is probably Google Earth, although you probably won't find much of anything to see except snow.

Thanks for the heads up though, since it is in the front yard.

Yep does seem to be a problem getting a Good shot from that side
I think though it's covered in the ones I add below hopefully.

The Downed Bomber is quite interesting too, I suppose the crew were listed as MIA, or do you know did they bail out?

reply to post by soma_pills

Thanks Soma for helping to get a good overall view of this, Ive been busy over the last day or two.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I have said in an earlier post emailed and tried to contact this Guy:

John Scurlott in association with Dr Kevin M. Scott - Aerial Photo's of Mt Baker Monthly

But he has not replied to my request to quantify this or to add anything.

Which in itself might show something being ATS lol.

I am surprised as I was trying to debunk the claims, and it would have given his business more coverage on the net..., and is true science on the subject he works on.

Also the Seismic activity page at the USGS which is meant to be updated DAILY for both Daily and the 10 yr plot I have already posted HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED SINCE JUNE 2008!

Also last year:

Mount Baker - Something is Happening
Mount Baker is attracting attention. Not because an eruption is imminent, but because there is some activity beneath the volcano and a lack of understanding about it. A major eruption at Mount Baker would impact millions of people in Seattle and nearby communities. Scientists at Western Washington University are conducting field work and monitorning supported by a National Science Foundation Grant.

Geology.Com May 07

Now the rest of the story does not exist on the site, and has been removed, so if any one can find an archive of the full story that would be great.

I am still not convinced we can write of the OP of the thread I linked claims as the above, lack of responses, the comments by some local People on the really difficult ability to view the West face.

So until we can get a West View, hopefully some view from the Air as the poster said is where it can be seen, updated seismological records , a Working (as the site is down?????) Mt Baker Observatory Link I think maybe there is something in this!

Too many unusual things going.

OP insistence.

Lack of response by those who photograph this even though it is in their interests both personally, professionally and scientifically to respond.

An unplugged from the Net, well general public Volcano Observatory
Mt. Baker Volcano Observatory

Previous reports from respected sources as Geology.com of an Unexplainable event happening there below the dome last year. With the story now not available in full.

An inability of us to get a 360 degree and birds eye view of events.

USGS not updating their stated DAILY UPDATES on the Volcano here:
Here USGS in association with University of Washington Pacific Northwest Seismic Network

So I am going to try and dig around more when I have time.

As said I am quite open minded about the possibility of something being withheld here due to the above!

Worried.

Elf.

Try and find that guy from the UK (I know narrow that one down) Anyway, he posted a thread not too long ago about his dad being called and asked to stay over the Christmas holiday in the US. His dad I believe was a seismologist or vulcanologist cannot remember which.

Apparently it was enough for these guys to ask this guys dad who is an expert to fly in and do it quickly. Don't know what's going on but they felt it important enough to have him there in a hurry.

Heya Elf,

Must applaud your persistence with this, for sure! You good conspiracy theorist you!

Have you been able so far to secure pictures from all sides of the mountain to prove or disprove the bald spot yet? Sorry, I've been submitting so many stories lately, ain't been able to keep up with this fascinating thread.
