America needs to finally adopt the metric system.

People hate it because they don't understand it, which really isn't fair to metric because metric is so much easier.

That's not true. I hate it and I understand it. (I'm not going to get into the DTV thing, it's just an off topic argument) I've tutored people who needed to learn the metric system. I had a bunch of little memorization tricks and normally my tutoring sessions with other things did very well.

Metric flipped and flopped around and even when I got a few people to understand it they still hated it.

This isn't just some "oh everyone's ignorant" situation.

You don't have to memorize anything with the metric system, except the prefix symbols. In fact, it becomes second nature once you use it daily, which is why people hate it. It's like trying to speak fluent Chinese in America: it won't work. As soon as people are surrounded by meters and liters it becomes second nature. People hate it just because it's unfamiliar. But in reality, metric makes more sense. Why divide things up into 8ths, 16ths, 5,280ths, and other strange numbers when you could just have 10, 10, and 10?

Conversely, how much time and memorization is wasted on the English system? Pints in a quart? Quarts in a gallon? Fluid ounces in a gallon? I remember having to learn these and hated it. It's pointless. In fact, I would wager that Americans know the metric system better than they know the English system.
