Gathering intel through communications is done by searching on key words and indicating factors including where the message originates, language used, order of words, nature of message and so on.
It's a very sophisticated system and doesn't rely at all on "special powers".

And when the intelligence community says (and they used to say this a LOT after 9/11) the levels of chatter have risen and the threat alert it high is that because they understood what that "chatter meant?" No. They couldn't decipher most of it, they just saw increased activity and assumed that might mean something was going to happen (or perhaps you believe they caught all those bad guys which is why nothing has happened!)

I do not think for one minute that Al Queda would have to plan a huge attack in India to get a message out. I also don't believe for one minute the U.S. intelligence agencies can intercept and decode all electronic transmissions. The mess in Iraq has provided ample proof that our intelligence is not that good at all! WMD anyone?

Not sure of the roaming, but still two groups behind held hostage (the attackers are said to be well armed / rocket launcher). Daylight coming very soon so the first light shots will be appearing, more damage & victims expected to be found.

Yes, there are... I'm sorry folks for misguiding this great thread. I don't mean to shift attention to where it absolutely does not belong. In reality, the Isreali forces are very well funded and capable as well. (I would put my finger there and towards the idea that it will be spun towards Pakistan)

I am still wondering about the report that there was a very large explosion (and I say this because it was reported in exception to the fact that HAND GRENADES are being lobbed regularly and this was reported as a "loud" explosion") in the hotel while the Army was inside...

This furthers the idea that these are elite forces. They are not going down quietly. They have laid siege to an ENTIRE CITY and are trying their best to hold it.

Edit - I would say a MINIMUM of 80 soldiers... Fits nicely with an elite COMPANY sized element... 16 units of 5 soldiers.

A 20-person NSW government trade delegation has been caught up in the terrorist attacks in India's financial capital Mumbai. The Department of State and Regional Development delegation is staying at the Trident Hotel, formerly known as the Oberoi, one of two hotels targeted in the attacks. A NSW government spokesman said the delegation was last heard from at approximately 6am (AEDT) and it was not known whether any members were injured. "I can confirm a 20 member trade delegation organised by the Department of State and Regional Development booked into the Oberoi hotel," the spokesman said. "We are currently trying to contact them. "The last we heard, they were being evacuated from their rooms but we haven't had any contact since then."

The Nariman House is a Chabad, only thing that can be "inferred" is that they are Jewish families, not country of origin.
