Who are they going to prosecute?

And if he had lived, don't you think the misery and ridicule he endured would have been punishment enough?

I don't support suicide, but I certainly support anyone's right to take their own life.

I don't agree with it, certainly not in this case, but I will fight to the death for anyone's right to choose what they want to do with their life. This is a basic liberty and freedom of choice issue and anything anyone tells you otherwise is simply an excuse.

It's stupid 'n-word's like this one that make so many new damn laws out of necessity that we can't walk down the sidewalk anymore without fear of getting arrested for loitering by some stupid f-ing cop!!!

IMO This is the kinda crap that is going to take down the internet or regulate it to the max!
Egging this young man, obviously crying out for help,to kill himself is a freaking crime and should be prosecuted as so!

If they try that, it needs to pointed out that the same thing could happen in a party, a park, in the streets....

The people whom provoked the man to do this are to blame. I had the opportunity to read some of the posts regarding this man and they were horrible to him. When I say horrible I have picked on people several times before and I read this feeling really really sorry for the guy. He tried so hard to fit in on this body building website and everyone including the site's moderator had provoked him to kill himself.

The 19 year old came out to several people on this forum telling them he was going to kill himself and every single one of them told him to do it. They went as far as making graphics of his picture saying "do it" and when it happened they showed no remorse by creating graphics saying "I did it".

If you want to know who is to blame for the mans death its the extremely cold souls on the forum bodybuilding.com. Additionally others should have called the police instead of watch the guy kill himself. I would like to think many didn't believe he was really going to do it, but unfortunately humans are so disgustingly sick (especially on the internet) most egged him on to do it.

No; but his doctors should be held accountable.

Ooookay. About this- I am a teenager. Although I don't watch webcams like this, I would 100% have called the police. That's it. I don't get it.
It's like that woman in NYC who was stabbed while like 50 people watched and nobody called the police. Everybody thought the other person would do it.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have said when you called the police? "Um, some guy somewhere on the internet is threatening to kill himself on a web froum...yeah, no, I don't know who he is or where he is, just do something about it ok? Bai."

Also, just out of curiosity, which police would you have called? The ones in your town or the ones in the stranger's town that you probably don't even know where it is?

Finally, Even if you called the police in that guy's town, how would they find the guy?

I'm not having a go at you, I just don't think people here realize how complicated the situation is.

Why does someone have to be held 'responsible'?

I mean other than the kid who offed himself, or perhaps his parents.

You're just not creative enough. There's tons of stuff you can do other than self immolation to get even. Just off the top of my head, you can get a job at the Congressional Cafeteria and piss in the clam chowder.

Remember the movie with Jodie Foster where she was raped and the men who stood around cheering on the rapists were prosecuted for that? It was a true story, and they did get prosecuted. How is this different?

edit for typo

The difference is suicide is not against the law, so there can be no charges of criminal solicitation.

Also it would be difficult to establish jurisdiction (are the viewers prosecuted by police in the town where the guy killed himself of the town they live in, or perhaps the town where the webserver is physically located?). It would be difficult to establish motive (did they reasonably believe it was or wasn't a hoax?). Hell, it would be difficult to even establish individual identities (you can't (easily anyway) establish identity from an IP address). It would also be fairly difficult to prove that the comments of the individual viewers actually caused the boy to commit suicide (and whether that is even a crime).

That is not to say all 1500 viewers and the website owners could not be sued in civil court for damages though. All bets are off when it comes to a civil case, just ask the RIAA.

Are you sure suicide isn't illegal? I thought for sure it was. Maybe it depends on the state.

I just looked it up and you are absolutly correct. Suicide is not illegal in any of the 50 states but attempted suicide is on the books as being illegal in 5 states.

Assisted suicide is illegal though, or at least questionable. That is what Kevorkian did his time for. Although I don't think 'egging on' is the same as assisting someone to kill themselves.

all computers have address and can be tracked for every site is looked at,
so If someone was egging this on I am sure there has to be a record of
who was a part of this crime.

i read this whole thread from start to end and up until this post was of the opinion that, although lower than pondscum, those complicit in encouraging the boys suicide are not ultimately responsible for what he did and that it would be a waste of time and money to pursue it.

if however, what you've posted is true, then maybe further investigation is warranted. it's one thing to not give a toss - it's a completely different story to deliberately and actively take a hand in another's demise. each case on its own merits in my opinion.

as to the boy himself - he was young, good looking and living above the poverty line ... those are all positives from where i'm sitting.
he also seemed to be intelligent ... another bonus. so it's a shame he felt his situation was hopeless and i feel for the pain he must have been in and the pain his family are no doubt in now. being an atheist i'm sure he's now at peace at least and can only hope his family finds a way to deal with their loss and move on.

That is true, but how do they know who was actually sitting at the computer doing the typing? They don't.

Rock star, Marilyn Manson, proudly boasts:

"Hopefully, I'll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity." (Spin, August 1996, p. 34)

Manson, an ordained "reverend" in the Church of Satan, mutilates himself on stage (1 Kings 18:28), rips-up the Holy Bible, and spews "blasphemies" against the Lord Jesus Christ. Manson's T-Shirts declare,

"KILL YOUR PARENTS" and "I LOVE SATAN".

Manson claims his album Antichrist Superstar came via "supernatural-inspiration":

"I heard this album as finished, I heard it in dreams . . . It was like the revelations of John the Baptist or something." (huH, Oct. 1996, p.34)

Manson's "hope" for Antichrist Superstar,:

"I think every time people listen to this new album maybe God will be destroyed in their heads. . ." (huH, Oct. 1996, p.37)

Manson's "blasphemy" is not just an act. Manson readily admits there's more to the show than meets the eye:

"I don't know if anyone has really understood what we're trying to do. This isn't just about shock value . . . that's just there to lure the people in. Once we've got em we can give em our MESSAGE." (Hit Parader, Oct. 1996, p.28)

Manson admits his childhood longing for Satan:

"My mom used to tell me when I was a kid, If you curse at nighttime, the devil's going to come to you when you're sleeping. I used to get excited because I really wanted it to happen . . . I wanted it. I wanted it more than anything . . ."(Rolling Stone, January, 23, 1997 p.52)

I think you've got to take everything Brian Warner (Marilyn Manson) says with a pinch of salt. The continued success of his 'profession' is dependent on controversy.
