Here is the California version of the lawsuit in PC Magazine with reference to the New Jersey lawsuit.

Somewhat unrelated, but nonetheless, I feel it should be said. When all of us smokers were telling you nonsmokers that creating laws banning smoking from restaurants/bars would erode a company's rights to run their business they way they wanted, you were opening doors for all sorts of legal controls put on how businesses should be run.

I don't think that is really unrelated at all. I think you make an excellent point.

What is wrong here?

Shame on eHarmony for giving up this battle. This amounts to nothing more than pure extortion and is pathetic. EHarmony broke no laws and yet loses a lawsuit. EHarmony is a private company and can operate however it wants.

Pathetic and an absolute waste of our legal system once again.

So much for freedom of association. Intolerance in the name of tolerance.

I'm honestly kind of repulsed by this.

I absolutely LOVE my gay friends, I also won't take this as an excuse to hate on all gays. Because not all of them were a part of this lawsuit.

That being said....I'm just speechless.... this is about as ridiculous as that boy getting arrested for "gas attacks".

It's been said before but I'll say it again, there are HUNDREDS of gay dating websites, just like there are dating websites specifically for people who want to date millionaires, just like there are dating websites for nerds and geeks (true story) there are dating websites for latinos, asians. Most have the option to choose whether you seek a male or female counterpart, allowing you to choose.

Now whether or not eHarmony chooses to do that themselves it's up to them they are a privately owned business.

I think a few gays got a little butt hurt (no pun intended) over all the happy couples being shown on the eHarmony commercials and decided to do something about it.

edit: remember Andy Rooney's little tidbit on 60 Minutes about race and discrimination? I see history does repeat itself

I'm wondering if the lawsuit was staged:

1. Helps distance eHarmony from its Christian roots; an image that has been used by other websites in their marketing ( "nope. Still gay: Chemistry.com)

2. Generates free publicity in the gay community, who may go there now out of loyalty or curioiusity.

3. Gives eHarmony camoflage with its christian supporters, mgt was "forced to open up." They can still claim verbally that they didn't want to.

the thing about eharmony wasthat when you put up an ad, there were only two category choices "man seeks woman" and "woman seeks man"

i'm straight, but i took my business elsewhere...

Oh this cracks me up... the report refers to the people using dating services as "niche clientele".

So heterosexual people are now "niche"? Go figure.

Anyway, I'm glad that this happened. Unless of course they want to put "Heterosexual dating service" in their terms of service.

See the issue here was that they simply didn't allow people of the same sex to be paired with eachother. They never advertised or in any other way hinted that this was a heterosexual only service.

Had they done so they would not be in court. But they wanted to "pussy foot" around the issue without speaking bluntly.

Good on the eHarmony for finding the error in their ways.
