eHarmony caves to lawsuit, agrees to pair gays

religionblog.dallasnews.com

A settlement Wednesday between eHarmony Inc. and the New Jersey attorney general requires the online heterosexual dating service to also cater to homosexuals, raising questions about whether other services that target a niche clientele could be forced to expand their business models. Hm. Its not as if eHarmony had a monopoly on online dating services. Or that there aren't myriad gay-specific dating services on the Internets. Should they be forced to handle heteros? Should McDonald's be forced to serve soyburgers to vegetarians? Should my favorite country radio station be forced to play Puccini?

What is wrong here?

Shame on eHarmony for giving up this battle. This amounts to nothing more than pure extortion and is pathetic. EHarmony broke no laws and yet loses a lawsuit. EHarmony is a private company and can operate however it wants.

Pathetic and an absolute waste of our legal system once again.

I can just imagine.

"Our personality algorith indicates that you are actually straight."

I don't think the lawsuit should have turned out like this; I'm not against gays at all but eharmony is a private business, what right do others hae to tell them how to run it?

It would be equally rediculous for someone to sue a gay dating site or a gay bar because they don't provide the same oportunities for straight people.

I guess people have finally learned a lesson from Jesse Jackson.

A classic shakedown leads to a settlement to avoid being label a racist or homophobic company.

Straight people ought to start suing gay sites because they do not offer straight dating. Give them a taste of their own medicine.

Yours is the perfect response.

I was going to respond more simply with, "What if they make a mistake?" I wonder if the "injured party" gets to sue eHarmony in that case, too.

I hear no eHarmony any more, only "dis-chord".

They probably have that in their clauses, they can't be sued if the marraie is unhappy.

Ultimately the 2 people chose to get married, and the site did not cause them to have the personality or do the things that lead to the marraige breaking down.

Just like Facebook didn't make the guy hack up his wife.

"requires the online heterosexual dating service to also cater to homosexuals"
That is absolutely absurd.
Its a private company.
A private business they can cater to whoever the hell they want.
Can you imagine a judge ordering people to let gays into there house if they don't want to?
That is what this is bordering on.

Wow.

I actually have nothing against homosexuals and support them in their relationships....but I think its WRONG for a PRIVATE company to be forced to do something they didn't want to do.

Guess this is like the "Fairness Doctrine".
I wonder if gay dating sites will now be forced to 'allow' hetros.

You know, normally when I'm "shopping". If a store doesn't carry what I want, I go elsewhere. So, not sure what the real problem is here.

My favourite people in the world are gays!!!

But as a webmaster, this lawsuit worries me. The whole slippery slope thing.

Let's pretend I have a website that caters to Pitbulls, and pitbull owners only. Offering them Tshirts of their beloved breed, and videos, and pitbull related content. This means Daschund owners can come and sue me, for not providing a section to wiener dogs!!

This bothers me. Do people not understand the meaning of 'niche', or providing targeted-content !?!??

Hi leo!

You mean you don't sue stores for not carrying the brands you're shoppong for? Maybe you should. and the rest of us, too - until all stores are forced to carry all items.

I wonder how many still don't get the point?

Ok. Conspiracy theory here.

What if eHarmony used this as a publicity stunt in effort to gather free publicity and make more money. Think about it. They are fighting against allowing gays in so they increase membership among those who agree with eHarmony viewpoint. Meanwhile all of this is playing out on the news off and on. eHarmony gains name brand recognition. Suddenly, they settle and now stand to profit not only from gays but also from straight people who agree with the gay's viewpoint.

just a thought

Crazy shame this is.

The can of worms has been opened.

I can't seem to find the details of the original lawsuit... just lots of articles of people complaining about how eHarmony was forced. I'd prefer to know the whole story before condemning either side. I guess I'm the minority here in that regard...

I am very surprised that this went through at all. I can't believe they can force a private business to provide service they didn't want to provide. There are so many matchmaker sites, so why not try another one if Eharmony is not right for you. There are gay matchmaker sites, too. I would think the gay sites would be more desirable for them anyway. This doesn't make sense at all.

Raven,
Thats about half of what the 'Fairness Doctrine' argument is about. They are trying to portray the use of public airwaves by contracted private services as a means to curtail whats broadcast!

I think I'm gonna sue Curves. Not that I really want to work out with a bunch of old ladies, just want some free cash and equality. This is ridiculous. E-Harmony should cater to the gays from a financial standpoint but should not be forced to if they don't want to. PC HAS GONE TOO FAR!

Wow America is free I mean if they wanted a gay site they should start their own and join one of the thousands of gay dating sites there are. Why should EHarmony have to change their business model. Wow .....
