I don't have a problem with the less intelligent people on the forum. It is easy to spot a thread created by such a person and it is also easy to ignore. I have a much harder time with the intelligent people who are here to cause trouble, troll or are so sure of themselves that they will not listen to any opposing viewpoints. That is the type of member that I have the hardest time with. Then again, I am sure there are people out there that think the same thing of me.

I wonder, OP, if you mean intellegence screening or just trying to weed out the members that don't agree with you. IMO some of the seemingly not so bright can still make valid posts and have interesting opinions where those that think they are smart ramble on and on just trying to seem smart.

I'm sure if they implemented a IQ test on ATS I would pass or get a perfect score. Thanks to the tutelage of Mr.Google. So an IQ test online is kinda flawed in the first place.

A moron could know something you don't, so who would be stupid. And my IQ is over 133 or was that 13.3 well it's over one of those numbers.

Well, if that test was in place, I doubt very much this thread would have appeared for anyone to respond to.

Seriously, did you actually think any of this through or did you just think it sounded good? What do you think such an implementation would achieve? A nice little elite club? You know, like the little elite clubs the bulk of this site rails at day-in-day-out?

That sounds such a great policy for a conspiracy site. Instead of collating information and spreading the conclusions, let's restrict who can actually contribute or even hear the 'truth'. That's a little self-defeating for a site like this isn't it?

Some of the people that might actually need to hear this information? I know, let's stop them from hearing it all together! I'm sorry, you're too dumb to matter!

Also, how would this guarantee the quality of posts would improve? Even academically smart people can be dumber than # and there's nothing in the Internet Troll Handbook that shows how 'intelligent' people won't troll or wilfully disrupt a message board.

Similarly, intelligent people can also be deluded, obstinate, irrational and just idiotic. A high IQ score doesn't take any of that away.

IQ tests measure precisely one thing...how good the participant is at taking IQ tests.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

I for one don't know where to stand on this issue. One hand you could potentially have the site weed out plenty of idiots who make useless threads that contribute nothing.

No. Definitely not. Personally I wouldn't post here if such a thing was bought in.

Elitism sucks.

Just because someone doesn't have a high IQ does NOT mean they don't have the right to opinions, or beliefs. And just because you may not believe what some people type, it does not mean that everyone shares your disbelief.

And just remember that, one day, one of these "idiot" people may be right.

Think about how you'd have laughed on Sept 10th 2001 if someone told you that people were about to fly airliners into major US landmarks.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

I know a lot of stupid 'smart people'.
An IQ test means nothing.

Thats quite a statement to make,my brother's father in law is a nucleur physisist and built the nuetron bomb,my brother said he bought a new Volvo turbo, was bored took the engine apart, had to get my brother to drive to Pleasanton to put it back together,so does that mean he has a low IQ?

No they should not, how do you think this forum manages to stay alive and manage to earn some chash? It's the comercials they have on the site.
Because it's clasified as a big board it earns some cash.Alot of members and visitors for this site means more income. Now I don't know what profit the owners of this site make, but I know a part of it is alocated for maintainance and upgrades.

I think that is the most absurd suggestion.

I believe this site is meant as a sharing platform of ideas, knowledge, and experiences. Just because one person is not privy to the same education as another person, does not make their experiences any less interesting.

What better way to bridge the wide grey than to have a place where we can freely discuss and exchange some of the thoughts and ideas that we all have; regardless of race, culture, genger, IQ, religion etc.

I hope your suggestion doesn't serve to get the backs up of those people who may feel like they can't articulate as well as others, or who are so excited about sharing their idea that they care not about the grammar or punctuation of their comment.

If it is about you not agreeing with what they have to say, then I am reminded of a movie quote.

The American President

You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest.

Cheers

I agree with people who say that I.Q. test scores don't mean a thing.
Some of the smartest (book smart) people I know, can be some of the dumbest (common sense) people I have ever met.

Two more examples why ATS should not do this, look at forrest gump and rain man...
There are different types of intelligence, knowledge, wisdom, etc.
It's ATS's diverse range of people and types of intellect that drew me here in the first place.

There is a group called Mensa that goes by minimum IQ guidelines. Maybe interested parties should try there to get an exclusivity fix.

Couldn't have said it better.
That being said, my real reason for saying ATS should not do this, is the same as schrodingers dog's reason

. . . to include an age range of near 8-80

Coincidentally that is also my IQ range.

Us dumb people are people too!

If this goes through, (Fat Chance!), I want a grandfather clause for moderators.

I would hate for Byrd to have to work the forums alone.

I don’t think introducing an IQ test, would be such a good idea, because there is always going to be someone out there with a low IQ who may have had some type of relevant experience, which can add to the knowledge of a particular topic.
I also believe that intelligence can be measured in many different ways

I think an anti-troll test would be more appropriate than an IQ test. Someone could pass an IQ test but be dumb as a rock, and on the flip side you could have someone not meet the minimum IQ score who is actually pretty darn smart. Plus I figure even smart people aren't smart about everything all the time. Someone might know more about a certain subject than I do, but the next subject we talk about I may be more knowledgeable. If one or the other of us didn't pass an IQ test to be on here then we would never benefit from learning from the other person.

Oh dear. I should get my coat, go out back and fire a gun in my mouth. My IQ is only 110. I must be a total retard compared to everyone else here, a right proper gamma minus semi moron, that's me.

The Uni I attended sent me to be tested for dyslexia & I got an IQ test as part of that process. All went brilliantly until it came to the interpretation of shapes, patterns & graphs ... and that's where I got a zero mark.

I don't think the IQ test means a great deal, tbh, but I would say that, wouldn't I ?

There has always been only one criterion for membership - adherence to the T&C, which can be very simply boiled down to, "Don't be a jerk".

What we're looking for is on-topic, polite discussion. Do that, and we're fine. The cream will rise to the top. Sometimes it originates from a genius, and sometimes not. Sometimes topics will resonate with you, and sometimes not.

Everyone is welcome to explore and participate as much as they like, as long as they can do it in the manner defined in the T&C.

Ever read the book, "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten"? I highly recommend it.
