The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

It seems when every time the name is brought up in the forums ever ones claws come out and I.Q. points drop. No one is truly listening and merely ready for a fight.

Had you started this thread in a manner that was not overtly rude and biased, then I sincerely doubt you would have been taken to task. But you didn't, and now you're whining because you were called out on to the floor over it.

The mere fact you refer to people who do not share your perspective as ones whose "I.Q. points drop" as quite snide and self-serving.

You are more than welcome to criticize Obama as you see fit. However, I suggest you stick to real issues of merit and not just mudslinging thinly disguised as constructive criticism. This way if you are taken to task, at least you'll have a leg to stand on.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

Regardless of what you may personally think, this is an outstanding thread! I laughed several times while reading it. I have to read more!

By the end of this thread, I was actually sympathetic towards the OP, who has a definite right to express an opinion on tackiness of anyone or anything. Furthermore, I believe the OP was sincere, with no ulterior motive.

I think this belongs in the "Metaphysics and Psychology" forum, because it is one of those subjective arguments that can probably never be resolved, or at least not very easily.

#

For the record, I must be tacky, because I think the first family looks great! That is my opinion. Next time I buy a suit, I am going to go for the Obama look. Count on it!

There's a part of a book (I believe it is Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk) where he talks about how everything has to be fashionable nowadays. He mentions how all the images of Jesus on the cross are of him very fit and with no body, altogether looking very good (except for the blood of course). So it's really no surprise that people are attacking the family's fashion sense before he even gets into office.

And just to clarify, I'm not a big Obama supporter either.

The line you quoted refers to Obama's name causing chaos in the forums as a whole and does not refer to this post. However it is obvious my I.Q. dropped in my own post as evident in my rather nasty reply to a certain poster. This is not who I am. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Please, lets kill this.

Superficial people that are insecure about making a purchase that might not appeal to those of the same ilk, would be so shallow to take notice of how one is dressed.... I am not one to go out and purchase new clothes because some metro sexual cowboy riding a Chinese built Moped doesn't like my 11 year old Hawaiian shirt, bell bottoms.boots and pith helmet....Be a slave to the merchants, if you like But I am so cool to look at, and like to express my individuality.... Besides, The Barack Obama Family, looks even better than me. and that says a lot. Really I look very Cool . _javascript:icon('

they have one car too. i think they live modestly. their dress reflects upon that. in the age of consumerism and debt, that's quite a thing.

The guy hasn't even been in office for a week and you're ripping his wife and daughter's appearances to shreds.

What a waste of space.

It was evident from your post you voted Republican and are looking for anything to rip on. (Sour grapes).

Obama will have a long hard road ahead of him trying to mop up the many messes our last President made.

I began to notice his wife's lack of taste and style with a little help from my girlfriend. Now it is all I notice. Shes puts her children in horrible dresses that look like they were purchased from Walmart and the old lady at the door smacked some bows on them on their way out. Why the hell did she not look put together during his victory speech? She looked like a crack whore in a thrift store frock or worse, hired help. If you are dumbfounded by concerns just compare her to Mccain's wife. Any questions?

woah.
you think that it's White House policy to trust the individual's taste to how they are presented to the nation and world?
you don't think they have stylists that dress them for certain occasions for certain purposes?

you dont think the gray was there via a publicist's choice of knowing it indicates "wisdom" and "experience"?

you don't think that the dull, conservative styling even for a Dem, in Office, isn't a STAPLE of every other First Family??

their cornrows will come and go.
ust like Hillary's "southern" accent when she was visiting southern states.
just like Obama's "ebonic-esque" twang to his speaking delivery comes and goes according to whom he's speaking to.

just like his eloquent mixture of said "ebonic-esque" and "well spokenness" emerges when there's a more refined mid to upper class white audience.

IT'S ALL P.R. - it's a refined SCIENCE.
they pay people fat sums for this type of advice, training and styling.

where have you been?

and how come you only see the light reflected off the surface of the water, and not the leviathan underside of the icebergs?

lay off the CNN/FOX/ABC.

take a few red pills.

p.s. that necklathe she wore on electhun night wath fabuluth.

That WAS a designer dress according to my girlfriend. She just read a news article about it, it's a little pricey. I agree with the OP 100%, historic moment in American history ruined by horrible taste. When I turned on the ol' boob toob and saw her standing there I started cracking up. Not a good statement for the new first family. My dogs are better dressers than Michelle. All that said, I wish them luck and success and hope Obama doesn't ruin the country.

When all attacks against President-Elect Obama fails, go for his family and little children. That's pretty classless of you. Never let ignorance and pseudo-racism get in the way of a good troll-created thread.

On a talk show recently Michelle said she bought her clothes from J. Crew catalogs. J. Crew is fairly upscale; their clothes are popular among preppies and yuppies; they tend to be conservative. She is (or was) a working professional and her clothes are quite suited to her occupation. IMO the little girls always look adorable.

Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan both came from great wealth and their whole lives centered around their appearance. People reporting on Jackie never failed to mention the outfit she was wearing and what designer had created it. Image was what they were about. Michelle Obama does not strike me as that superficial. Reporters have better things to focus on.

I think the whole family is very attractive in a wholesome, all-American way. That is a good image to project.

Considering your avatar, I really don't get ya. Please read the whole thread to find out how I voted as well as the point I was trying to make. As for a waste of space it's funny you deemed it necessary to make 4 posts here. I have apologized and conveyed a desire to bring this post to an end. Your post however compelled me to post again.

Everyone saying "leave the kids out of it": Why didn't the liberal media leave Sarah Palin's kids out of it? When the negativite press coverage of Bristol Palin was abounding, your excuse was that Sarah brought them into the "limelight". Well, guess what, Obama's family is in the "limelight". It was the same thing with Joe the Plumber. "He's in the limelight now, so we can do a background check".

As for Michelle Obama's clothing, who paid for it? Hmmmm? Remember, that was an issue with Sarah Palin. And so was the issue with Sarah Palin's family flying around with her. Turns out, it is common practice for the State to cover menial expenses like that; but still, it was an issue.

The OP has every right to draw an opinion and I am dissappointed that he apologized. Sarah Palin's family was called every name in the book and now that there is a little "turnabout", the same name-callers are crying foul.

Amazing.

HypnoAsp - I appreciate the fact that you apologized. I hope you actually learned something in the process.
I hope you admit (if only to yourself) that you might have some issues about race. Hear me out.

I was thinking about this last night... "Crack whore" and "hired help" notwithstanding, if your criticisms of Michelle were not about race, I don't think there would be 2 racial disclaimers in your first paragraph...

IF it were not racial in nature, then why even mention race or prejudice? There is no automatic connection between race and being "tacky". At least not in my mind...

Your first paragraph is like saying, "I really don't know how to put this without seeming sexist, but don't you think feminists are really stupid"?

I appreciate the fact that you apologized, but I hope you really listened to and understand the criticism of your OP.

i rest my case. surely you have better things to do than dissect the first lady's fashion choices.
having said that,
this thread has attracted some truly ignorant people:

"At least state dinners will be more interesting. How many foreign dignitaries have ever had Ox Tails, Collard Greens, Okra & Tomatoes, Banana Pudding and Lemonade for dinner."

now, i know you didn't state the above quote, but this is the most racist thing i've seen on this thread.

velvet death, you don't have a clue. and if the first family happens to choose that menu, then so what? they are common in menus eaten by many races, particularly southern diners. what's your standard dining fare? oh, wait let me guess: bigots' stew with a side of ignoramus gravy slathered on your biscuits and washed down with some ice cold redneck moonshine? boy howdy, sounds deelish!
