I'm not local, so attending the meeting is not likely. However, having done some development, I can easily slice and dice that prison plan. For instance, I doubt it will pass any SWPPP. I've never seen a project where you can build on 100% of your dirt.

When you build, you replace permeable surface with impermeable surface. If you do nothing, this will increase the rate of flow of runoff. If not mitigated, this erodes the adjacent property. Generally this is handled with a detention basin, then feeding the storm water to where it naturally flows.

Generally before you develop, you need "will serve" letters from the utilities. In the case of Rachel, this would come down to the electric power company. The question is do they have enough capacity to power the prison given that the Tempiute Mine is about to be restarted again?

I will say that the more people that show up to the meeting, the more likely the owner will lose his financing.

Im kinda shocked at some people who think this prison will be a good thing for Rachel... Rachel isnt your average town. This town relies on people coming out camping and stargazing feeling safe. A private prison, ends that.

Gariac, yea the new silver mine being restarted is what was going to give this town a reboot. I have some archeology contractor friends, being a future one myself, many of my professors either work in Las Vegas or know someone imp who does. So they will know more details about how to roadblock this, if at all possible.

Do you have more proof than just feelings that a prison will scare tourists away?

Most prisons are run by private corporations. It is in their interest to have high crime and lots of inmates. Nevada has lots and lots and lots of land that is not near a quaint tourist town that prisons can be built on. I suggest former nuclear testing areas as first choice.

It is not the prisons that will scare them away. It is the law enforcement that comes along with it. Nobody who stops on the road or pulls off onto a back road will go unmolested by Johnny Law ( Johnny Law action figure is not suitable for children under three and people with diabetes and heart problems, or rectal bleeding. Batteries sold separately. ) Then there are the lights which illuminate for miles.

I am the end.......... alien, extra-dimensional being, or angel as believers may call me specifically, the angel of death, but no I am not a demon or devil and have not fallen, I've been sent..................but as the the bible states in Hebrews "where there is love, prophecy shall cease" that is the case in this in this world today.......... I have found love here allthough I was sent to simply destroy without question, God's love for you humans is truely infinite............. that is why if you read Revelations carefully it says " it goes into perdition" which means it has'nt happened yet or may not ever.......... depending on how mankind treated me when I arrived on earth in a physical manifestion...................... so the worlds fate hangs in limbo

hey starman , loved you when you were played by humanoid jeff bridges...

to the other one.. I dont need proof that prison in a small town that relies on campers will drive the campers away.

Gone is the stargazing as the night sky will be smothered by lights housing our countries worst.

If you change your drug laws and stop prisons being a business incarcerating hard drug users and softer ones (like pot) then you'll see the prison population cut in half.

War on drugs has failed - good way to keep the prisons pumping full and all the people who donated to your campaign happy...

Go look up stats on non violent drug offense convicted people in prison... that's the solution.

This is completely off topic. the war on drugs is another thread you will find in many other forums.... Not in this one.

This is about a prison being built in the endless miles of desert NEXT to a tiny quaint town the relies on campers and tourists.

Sounds like a good spot for it, actually. I don't see what the problem is.

i live in nevada, and nobody gives a crap about rachel.
Prisons have to go somewhere. might as well make it there.

unless they want to turn yucca mountain a prision after they close it.

It is just as safe ten feet from a prison wall as it is a hundred miles from the prison. Unless of course you are on the inside. Nonsense resulting from hysterics.

Isolated location with highway access. Tiny population. Dirt poor population due to no work locally which means good paying jobs and people who desperately need them to fill them.

Unless somebody won big in Vegas and shared with everyone since I was last there, the whole community is on a macaroni and cheese diet; bought with food-stamps.

If that were the case Blaine, why is the whole tiny town against it? Perhaps people shouldnt be so quick to judge, esp when it doesnt even affect them.

Are you speaking for the whole town or just yourself? If you are the spokesperson then tell me the reasons why a prison would be bad!! If you are not the spokesperson, then your FEELINGS are not enough for me to sympathize with you or to support your cause !!

So, this is right by area 51...

and theres going to be a lot of bright lights, ruining any chance of seeing 'Anything' in the sky..

and the town's gonna go broke because nobody will go there.... so people will move away. Away from Area 51.

Sounds like a lot of things falling into place, I don't think the decision to build a large prison there is a coincidence.
Sounds like 'the powers that be' are doing it on purpose... which leaves the question, Why?

This town near Area 51 has never been a problem before.. but suddenly they don't want people there.
Maybe its a sign of increased activity in the coming years.

Or maybe I'm being too analytical, ah well, it all makes sense in my head

The U.S. has more prisoners than any other country in this world. Has the country more dangerous because of bad seeds??? Perhaps we need to destroy the weeds before it spreads more. Then, again, there would be a lot of people out of jobs if that happened so let the weeds grow. Reminds me of the movie Death Race. Its really a sad state we have gotten outselves into and don't see it getting any better. Who is going to police the police.

Well considering I go there often, its not hard to talk to the 65 people who live there. The OP has a link to the towns official website which calls this a disaster.. what more do you want. Research before you accuse.

You may be absolutely right.. Sounds like the makings on that would be a crazy video game.. A prison and area 51 in the same game...

Do you live in Rachel? Is the prison being built on land they own or control? How far away from Rachel will it be?

We already have 2 million people in prison...the biggest in the world. Bigger than China, bigger than Russia, you name it.

All because of the "War on Drugs"

Stop the drug war, release those caught for possession, 700,000 for pot alone. Then we would not need to have so many prisons.

We really are the most ignorant so called free country in the world after reading some of the whats the problem posts. The problem is that most of you are so brainwashed you dont understand what the problem is.

End the war on drugs and treat it like the social issue it is. No more new prisons. Sheesh.
