Bush sends American Military to Georgia for "humantarian" support

www.foxnews.com

A joint civilian-military assessment team was flying into Georgia late Wednesday afternoon, local time, to gather information on exactly what is needed, the official said. A second flight, with some initial humanitarian supplies such as sleeping bags and water, was to arrive after that.

Russia will not like this at all. Even if it\'s just for humanitarian purposes having our hardware there is inherently dangerous.

This is a dangerous setup. With American troops on the ground we're just one missile away from a serious escalation.

i hope this whole mess ends soon, because if one shot is miss fired it can get very very ugly fast.

This is what we do as Americans. We help those being oppressed. We are sending in humanitarian help for the people of the DEMOCRATIC country of Georgia. Whether Russia likes it or not, that does not matter. The people of Georgia now feel a little better that the Great USA is on the way to show Russia they can not just roll over countries for the purpose of showing who is boss.

Well, if nothing else, this is a direct challenge to Russian forces to let us in. Will be interesting to see if Russia backs down and lets the US military forces in or if they put up resistance.

Now THIS is where it finally gets interesting. Russia may or may not be still attacking Georgia, but their troops are most definitely still in the country. Maybe this will force them out.

I would say that we already have a serious escalation. Russia keeps claiming they are there to "help their citizens and keep the peace." The US is simply using the same "logic" (or BS - whichever you prefer). While having our people and hardware there is dangereous I think it would definitely hinder any Russian plans to completely overrun Georgia.

This article also noted that the President is sending Secretary Rice to Georgia for "talks" or something like that. Is Russia going to risk killing, injuring or capturing the US Secretary of State (and close friend of President Bush?)

These are scary times but I think this is a good move.

The Georgian president made a direct appeal to the Unites States for help. Whether it will be viewed as a 'ploy' or not depends on the conduct of those we send to provide it.

As for Ms. Rice's foray into the arena, THAT most certainly will demonstrate whether this is or is not simply a 'ploy.'

Hopefully, it will be a change from our usual 'back-door' tactics in diplomacy.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

The people of Georgia now feel a little better that the Great USA is on the way to show Russia they can not just roll over countries for the purpose of showing who is boss.

Its funny, because you know, I could have sworn the "Great USA" did exactly that in Iraq

Hypocrisy in action there....

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

There are no surprises. You can bet this action was expected. Putin knows Bush likes to put his fat face into everything. The only question is what are Putin's plans, and what did this action by the Americans have to do with them. Not that he's a man particularly likable , but when one looks into it, you can't help but admire his penchant for strategy. This is certainly no surprise to Putin.

Now here is a "twisted" thought that is a little off topic but I think I will mention it.

What if the US sees a massive attack on Iran as a way to "push back" against Russia. We (the US) could crush Iran and all of its Russian equipment and Russian trained personnel with a full scale conventional attack. We would then be sending the "big message" back to them without having to face their soldiers directly and risk a nuclear confrontation.

I have seen a number of reports of a large US/French/British fleet headed for the Persian Gulf area. I have not seen conclusive proof that these reports are true, but if they are there is REALLY a lot of firepower in this fleet.

Most analysts doubt that, and even if so, the price would be prohibitevely high, don't you think?

Rather than posting a big, long rant that will just get me riled up, I'm just going to post this one word that will make my point.

Iraq.

'Nuff said, so shut up.

buddhasystem -

You are absolutely correct. I am neither promoting this idea or saying it would be easy --- there is no doubt it would be a horrible mess or even a disaster.

I am just saying that maybe in that strange netherworld of strategic thinking it might be viewed as a possible course of action.

Were those sleeping bags and such left over from the Katrina victims? We should start looking in our backyard before we help our neighbors...

Oh really? The people of Iraq are more free now than as far as I can remember. Do you think democracies are built over night? The USA fought a war of freedom...lasting how many years????? How long before we reached status of world power? Things do not fix themselves over night. Please......Hypocrisy.... I think not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Why is it that we have common sense and Bush/Cheney does not, unless their actions are intentional and they want death for us all.

Although I disagree with your premise, I have to agree somewhat with what you say. Our government is not put in place to provide for us. I will agree though that WE have to look in our back yards. WE need to help our neighbors and family in these stressing times.....NOT ASK THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT for more handouts. In the long run....that helps NO ONE!!!! Except maybe the democratic party of course, keep people in a position of welfare and they will know nothing else. Once they know nothing else, they are part of the problem. How does it go.....give a man a fish, feed him for the night. Teach him how to fish you feed him for life. But then again most people on here would probably argue that would only create over fishing, in addition to global warming created by America...Hence I guess everything is our fault......no matter what.

Look up hypocrisy, I don't think you fully grasp it's definition

You were just rambling on about Russia invading a sovereign nation and how they're wrong to do it.

America falsified intelligence to invade a sovereign country, and there going for round two with Iran.

You say Saddam was dangerous and needed to be taken out, well I think Georgia's president is dangerous and needs to be taken out.

And, since you don't recall, or maybe you're just ignoring the facts, Georgia provoked Russia!!!!

How did Iraq provoke America?

I await your response.

Hypocrite.
