www.politico.com...

Chief Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell confirmed to Politico that Department of Defense officials cautioned Barack Obama's campaign that his planned visit to wounded American troops in Germany could not be political in nature.

"Sen. Obama is welcome to visit Landstuhl or any military hospital in his official capacity as a United States senator," Morrell said in a brief interview. "But there is a DOD policy which governs campaigning and electioneering at military facilities that would have to be respected if he were to visit. That distinction was relayed and made clear to campaign, and they made a decision on their own based on that guidance."

Part of the DOD policy is no media, and no entourage, only a military still photographer.

No media hype? No photo op? NO VISIT!

Obama clearly made the decision not to waste time visiting the troops if he could not gain from it politically. Very sad.

One thing is for certain: it pretty much nixes the idea that the military asked him to cancel. Obviously, that's not true.

The furor over this is his own fault. His campaign should have been aware of the rules and regulations in place for such a visit long before his plane ever touched down in Germany and if they didn't like it, they never should've scheduled the visit. It certainly wouldn't look anything close to as bad as this now does.

Too bad a majority of regular Americans will never learn about this. I'm sure his groupies in the MSM will report that the DOD told him not to go, not that he couldn't gain any MSM political points by visiting the wounded troops. Sad indeed.

Maybe, but then again:

In the air flying from Berlin to Paris, Gibbs spent 45 minutes spinning the press over the course of three media availabilities in an attempt to clarify what appeared to be dueling reasons for cancelling the trip: statements both sent out last night by the campaign.

Source

The rest of the article is basically what we've already heard, but the fact that they've held three press meetings trying to quell this story shows that his campaign is quite concerned about it...and that the media IS paying attention to it.

This could, could be the huge, election defining gaffe that the McCain camp was hoping for.

Even if they could prove Obama intentionally didn't visit the troops, it wouldn't derail his campaign. It might smear it for a couple of weeks, but most of the American voters have memory spans that rival a goldfish and come election time they will have forgotten about it.

This is very disturbing and it is getting out in the media. I'd already heard the details on both TV and the Radio. I think this proves he has no interest in the soldiers who risk their lives for us. No matter how you feel about the war to have that attitude about the soldiers and then want to be Commander and Chief?

Another thing I noticed last night while watching a tape of his German Speech is that he really did not get a very enthusiastic response. I think the people were there for the other activities.

He is also slowly dropping in the national polls. I know its too early for the polls to mean anything, but at least it means he is not having that hypnotic effect on everyone. In fact its a statistical tie in all but one of the polls I checked this morning.

Wow, while I'm typing, Obama is getting pounded on the news for not visiting the soldiers and they are mentioning that this trip did not help him in the polls. They are also discussing the fact the Obama campaign is saying something different than what the Pentagon is saying.

I love this, the commentator just said "he is measuring the drapes in the Oval Office a little early"
He has been pretty arrogant. I started this adventure willing to vote for him and changed as time went on. Now I'm positive this person is as phony as they come. Anyone who can not see through this transparent megalomaniac has either been hypnotized or is not of reasonable sensitivities IMO. I know its because they want change and so do I, but I think they are jumping straight out of the frying pan into the fire on this guy.

People need to shake their heads and clear the hypnotic effect he has had on them and then truly study him. Study who he associates with, what he says, how he acts and what his plans are with an open mind.

above is a good satirical piece on the whole obama love fest. we shouldnt place our politicians on pedestals they exist solely to represent the people and need to learn they are not the boss ,they are the employee.

As someone who isnt american i hope whoever it is that becomes the next president is the best man for the job, i think america is a good country with good people who deserve an honest representative and if obama is that man then good luck to him the same goes for mcain.

Thank you my friend. I'm very touched by your kind and considerate words. It's not everyday that a non-American citizens feels the way you do and says what you said above...especially on this forum. In fact, many legal citizens of the U.S. can't find such kind words to say! I wish the best for you and your great nation as well!

I hate to interrupt your hate-fest, but if anyone cares about the real reason, it's out there.

Barack Obama scrubbed a planned visit to see wounded American servicemen and women in Germany because of concerns raised by the Pentagon that the stop at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center could be seen as a political event, according to Obama's campaign.

Although the Illinois senator visited troops in Afghanistan and Iraq on the first part of his overseas trip, those stops were part of an official Congressional delegation, and therefore deemed apolitical. The European tour, which included a speech in Berlin last night before an enthusiastic crowd of 200,000, is funded by the campaign and as such is not official government business.
...
"We learned from the Pentagon [Wednesday] night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event.Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perceived as a campaign event ... and decided instead not to go."

But carry on with your hopes that people don't have the capacity to understand this and will think Obama hates our troops or wouldn't visit them unless he could use them as a photo op.

I just wanted to inject a spot of reality. But slam the back of your hands onto your forehead and shake your head slowly at the horrors this man has wrought on our poor servicemen.
And then remember who put them there in the first place.

The DOD already told Obama he is more then welcome to visit the troops as a U.S. Senator if he would like to but not as a presidential candidate. The have a policy against it. Cindy McCain was also denied a troop visit for the similar reasons. Despite the DOD's offer to allow him to visit without the campaign armada Obama has decided not to. This has nothing to do with hate and if you would use your head for something other than a hair farm you would be able to see that clearly.

Have a nice day liberal and have fun being brainwashed by the left wing media.

That's exactly right BH, like the OP said. No media hype? No photos? No visit! How would a, "stop" be seen as political unless there were pics of the visit on the cover of, oh I don't know, say the Washington Post?

You're usually a lot more honest in your observations...

What a great find, and here I thought it had something to do with his religious views.

It goes to show you, Obama doesn't care about anyone but himself and the power he seeks.

The simple gesture could have benefitted his image without the MSM Cameras.

I guess these wounded troops just aren't important enough to make a schedule stop for.

Well, I just hear this crap spewing out of Obama's mouth about the care of the US Serviceman. About how he's going to help them with this program and that program. Guess it wasn't worth the stop if he couldn't have a picture taken for his website, showing his concern.

Obama is like any other freakin' politician out there. He sees the US military as nothing but Kevlar that can mow the grass.

From BH's own source...

"Senator Obama had hoped to and had every intention of visiting our troops to express his appreciation and gratitude for their service to our country," retired Air Force Major General Scott Gration, an Obama adviser, said in a statement.

Washington Post

First her source is the "Official Obama Playbook" (Washington Post), but more importantly, look at the area I "bolded" in the article...

WOW!!!!

Talk about SPIN

No doubt, and how true. A retired Obama AF advisor. Give me a break.

That's one thing about Obama supporters, they'll take Obama's words off his campaign website and profess as if it were fact.

What Obama says is Law.

Is it really that hard to see through this guys "great pretender" BS? If he is this arrogant now, imagine how arrogant he would be as POTUS.

Obama wants to be dictator of the North American Union. The American should not let this happen.

Yup. It's from the Obama campaign and the Washington Post, so it has to be the truth. But, it would definitely hold more credence if it came from the New York Times.
