Cancer Expert warns employees on cell phones

www.cnn.com

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- The head of a prominent cancer research institute issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff Wednesday: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The issue that concerns some scientists -- though nowhere near a consensus -- is electromagnetic radiation.

The warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Herberman is basing his alarm on early unpublished data. He says it takes too long to get answers from science, and he believes that people should take action now, especially when it comes to children.

"Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," Herberman said.

Good, now all we need is for this to be told to the general population.

*sees a Verizon commercial, followed by an AT&T commercial*

I'm starting to lose hope on this issue. The phone companies will never allow this to be known by everybody.

Then use a headset, either bluetooth or wired, or use speakerphone. It's just a cell phone people, relax!

If the cell phones don't give you cancer, something else will.

You still end up carrying the thing in your pocket right near your family jewels!

I've never felt right about mobiles - I spent 2 years working for Orange in a call centre, right next to the blooming mast day after day, constantly on my mobile as well cos it was so cheap as an employee - 5 years later my head is still full of ringing, I wonder if it would go away should all the masts and phones turn off... Or if I find a cave up a mountain somewhere.

I think hes full of it.You would get as much radiation from pc monitor or tv or the sun.Microwave coms use the skin effect in which they don't actually go through you they go around you.And the small voltage received and transmitted by a cell phone is so small. All the tests they have done have shown no increased risk of anything. You could get more harmful effects being close to high voltage power lines.

That's what they said about the tobacco companies back in 70-80's too.
Maybe a warning label is in order.

Sadly I doubt it. Chances are all you'll find is Bin Laden

Sigh...I'm really disappointed by some of the comments on cellular telephony by a few of the ATS members...I mean, for a group of people that are so inquisitive, and, well, mistrusting, of "the mainstream" - and cell phones are as much a part of the "mainstream" as you can get.

For example, "Then use a headset, either bluetooth or wired, or use speakerphone. It's just a cell phone people, relax! "

The above quote simply demonstrates ignorance (which we're supposed to "deny", remember?) - and I do not intend that as an insult to the original poster, either. First, a wired headset *may* be preferable to Bluetooth - however, the radiation will likely travel up the wire, and the phone is still positioned near your gonads, and your hip, which is where a lot of your red blood cells are produced.

A Bluetooth headset is even worse, because it has to maintain a wireless link with the phone - in addition to that, it radiates even farther into your head due to its positioning when you're using it.

Speakerphone? Potentially better, but it still depends - and remember, if you're concerned enough about using a cellphone to take what you think are precautionary measures (the aforementioned) - you still encourage the proliferation of cellphone towers to maintain a wireless network - and you can't use a headset for one of those!

Oh, and using a cellphone in a car creates a faraday cage effect - the phone has to put out far more radiation to pass through all that metal and get a signal. There was a study in Japan by a scientist concerned that the net effect of so many passengers in train cars using their phones to access the internet simultaneously created levels of radiation exceeding official safety guidelines (which, according to an assessment of around six hundred studies by the BioInitiative Report are already thousands of times too lenient).

And as for whoever said "I think hes full of it.You would get as much radiation from pc monitor or tv or the sun.Microwave coms use the skin effect in which they don't actually go through you they go around you.And the small voltage received and transmitted by a cell phone is so small. All the tests they have done have shown no increased risk of anything. You could get more harmful effects being close to high voltage power lines."

I think you're full of it, no offense intended. Firstly, do you know what kind of radiation you're talking about? I have measured over 2000 microwatts/square meter from someone's phone when it transmits to make a call. I am talking about pulsed, information carrying radio frequency radiation. You will not find that kind of reading from a PC monitor or a TV. Nor from high voltage power lines - though you shouldn't hang around them all day long, either. By "skin effect", are you referring to the "thermal" effect, by which "safety" standards are created?

If so, you are relying on scientific buffoonery - an outdated model which basically says that if your tissue or organs don't heat up past a certain point, it's safe. Of course, this treats your head as a plastic bag filled with water - no brain inside, no chemical or electrical impulses, no cells, minerals, pineal gland, mast cells, neurons, or your body's entire nervous system to sum it up nicely.

You guys have a lot of learning to do. As to the guy who issued the warning, I say, maximum respect. That takes guts. Eventually, people will have no choice but to heed warnings like that. Do yourselves a favor, and wake up now. Please.

They've been saying this for 8 years at least, why is it a surprise to everyone. Hey, guess what. You're holding a crystal receiving and transmitting high frequency waves. Oh wow, its right next to your brain. Hmmm, I wonder what the effect of that will be.

No its just I didnt fall for all the cool Iphones or whatever.

Also for the people that say Monitors and whatever else gives cancer also...

I might agree but its not like a monitor can pop popcorn for ya like a celphone can.

It should be noted that electromagnetic radiation has an accumulative effect. So while monitors don't produce as much radiation, we're exposed to far greater periods in front of our monitors compared with our cellphones.

WoW you know nothing about frequency, no offense. The general population knows nothing about frequency. Since I know it like the back of my hand Im going to shed light on this and it will most likely fall on deaf ears once again.

What about 2.4ghz bouncing off your skull at .5watts dont you understand?!?!?!

How can this be good!?!?!

I just want to scream at people, its so obvious to someone who knows about frequency and its affects. There was a study done in Austrailia that proved 2.4ghz at .5 watts over a period of time caused a 50% increase in cancer. IT DOES CAUSE CANCER ITS BEEN PROVEN!

This doesnt mean you cant use a headset (not bluetooth), this doesnt mean you cant talk on your cell a couple times a day. It simple means DONT GLUE THE DANG PHONE TO YOUR EAR!

Its really that simple, everytime I see some girl driving down the road yapping away I know she will prolly have a brain tumor by the time shes 40 (if she doesnt die from poor driving first). Because its those people that talk on their phones 24/7. I mean they get this hot ear effect, I dont even know what its called because Ive never had it. This is all common sense.

And your monitor DOES NOT cause cancer LOL. Seriously people.

We have something called PAR, which is personal acceptable radiation.
This is all based off of 1960-1970 government studies. The reason this is surfacing now and worse will later is we'd be shutting down broadcasting stations if the public actually knew the effects on them.
And the government doesnt want that nor does big business so there isnt going to be another study. The reason most scientists wont arent together on this is because they believe those studies because its what they were taught in school just like me.

They believe non-ionizing radiation does not cause cancer, and I believe they are full of crap! When you hold it to your skull its gonna cause cancer. Sorry end of story its a wrap plz drive thru!

Hope you all enjoyed my rant

Well the radio band is at a far lower frequency than visible light...

Well I'm sure it's not. Where did I say anything to the contrary?!?!?!

I didn't actually say that monitors causes cancer. For starters there are different types of monitors. The old CRT does produce radiation unlike LCD monitors. Anyway the point was the cumulative effect of radiation. Maybe you can prove me wrong on that point. As for the rest of your rant, I agree with you.

Oh sorry that was not directed at you. It was at the general public.

The whole monitor issue is well, most of them are 60 to 75 hz.
Thats far to low to cause cancer, mess with the eyes a lil maybe,
but we talk on a scale just below that.

2.4 ghz is way out of the scale you can hear on and its like a very
high pitched scream. This is the second thread Ive seen on this.
I might do a write up with some picture over it so people understand.
The key is wattage and how close it is to you etc....

The higher the frequency the worse it gets too.

The ADS system they are gonna use on crowds is thousands of watts and its 95ghz! Retinal detachment anyone?

Well there's small amounts of X-rays plus your forgetting the raster scan which is at 12.5 kilo Hertz. Okay, admittedly the x-rays are very low (unless someone removes the lead shielding) so ummm, nevermind

A write up sounds like a good idea. There's lots of misleading to downright false info out there so it would be good to get some real info from someone that knows what their talking about.

You'd think with that much power you'd fry people to a crisp, retinal detachment eeew

edit due to balls-up

The popping corn videos were a "Viral Marketing" strategy for a Blue Tooth headset manufacturer. The CEO was on CNN talking about it.

It was a HOAX. People should really perform research before posting.

Anyway, that doesn't make cell phones benign, but it does make your statement patently false.

There is no need to shut down broadcasting stations which are located far up in the air.

The danger of radiation from a transmitter is inversely proportional to the distance one is from the transmitter.

Think of it like a motor on a boat. Right next to the motor, the water is churned like nobodies business. 25 feet from the motor you get a wake

50 feet from the motor you might get a slight variation in water level.
