[edit on 7/13/08 by LLoyd45]

I believe it's an attempt to "de-slack" the slackers, learn the value of the working world and the dollar.

Jumping to the thought of it being an attempt for slavery is a large leap of thought.
Hey, it's a conspiracy site, and we're all entitle to our own personal theories regardless of how fantastic or incorrect they may be.

Well that is true

I just found it odd how slavery was the thought made, don't you think that's a far fetch? I'm mean, you've all been enslaved by the Republicans and nobody seems to say much about that, is it because they're white?

I did not say I am against helping my fellow American. But being forced to, obliged to, means not being free. Why is that so hard to understand??? Freedom includes the right to be "selfish." Besides which...what if those hours Id spend doing mandatory community service were hours that would be the difference between my family having enough food to eat, if I had those hours to work for my own ends, instead? If I had the FREEDOM to do so? Is that selfish?

One of the worst problems today is people like you who think you have the right to make decisions for everyone else based on your personal values. The purpose of the constitution was to prevent that very thing!

I can't believe how one persons thought of it being an attempt to slavery has started to spawn the thread. This is typical white fearing another colour, and the white people seemed to have conjured the belief Obama wants slavery from who? They made it up in there heads themselves, wow....and it's spawning...just wow.
Now you're putting words into my mouth. I never said it was about race or color.. I said it was about the need for Power.

Why are you trying so hard to make this a white-black issue? I have no desire to be enslaved by either.

I would think most people would find the idea repulsive no matter who was doing the enslavement..

Nobody has that desire to be enslaved. But when you've been enslaved by a party for some many years, and never account for it, or converse about it then a new person has an idea that seems to have tastes of slavery you assume it must just that.

I'll stop before things get out of hand. And we'll see what happens in the future with the US, which doesn't seem it will last too long.

Granted, I think it would actually be GOOD for a lot of kids. However...we're a nation built upon the principle of freedom. Forced servitude to the government is not freedom.

If you mean service to one's fellow citizen would be good, that could very well be so. But service to special interest groups, government profiteers, etc.? No, not in the slightest!

$4000 dollars in grants for 100 hours of service?

Forced servitude?

Reading comprehension?

I like the idea of mandatory military service in a major way, doesn't sound like he is talking military but some of it at least would surely be.

Sorry but Isreal survives against all odds in a region it's despised among nations that atack it at every turn and mandatory military service is the main reason why.

I have kids and I have to say, joining the army is dangerous, might get you killed, a draft just as dangerous or more so, it's "hot" out there in that fight...

Mandatory service in a country of 300 million, would give us what a 20 million man standing army? Not the best odds of my son dying in a fire fight that way...

sorry but as long as war was around I say everyone contributes, everyone... it would make America almost invinceable, greatly lesson the odds of death, starighten out alot of troubled kids, provide every young person with funds for college and work ethic...right now you end up with student loans which is pathetic our money goes via social security to...the dead and crippled not the living and the fighting...

I dig it, like starship troopers...

The term isn't socialist, it's fascist... but that's okay, we need to learn to absorb what works from other cultures and systems and discard what does not...

Mandatory service would be great for the country and great for allot of kids

Wow! You begrudge poor kids getting an education, and the disabled and elderly the right to exist.. Yes, you sound like a person who's dedicated to the concept public service to me..

Great movie, but I really don't think basing a whole society on it is a good thing to do.

I sure hope you get more than your fair share of fascism then.. It'll be a real learning experience for you.

Well, if Obama gets elected, I hope you get a heaping helping of mandatory service then.

Actually it would be a $4000 tax credit not a grant. Having trouble reading there? Most college kids wouldn't benefit from this at all.

Are you saying that I am spawning race crap? That was definately not my intent ..... WHO is going to be enslaved is what I was looking for. Considering that not only is the black/white issue is predominate in the US, but that Obama's color IS a major factor in this election, what else is "restarting slavery" to be when the comment is about a black candidate supposedly rekindling slavery?

To assume the reader of the original "starting slavery" comment is going to think the concept of "power" when speaking of slavery, in this scenario, is wholly fouled.

Personally, I'de just as soon be able to snap my finger and everydamnbody in the whole world be color-blind.

You know, i don't like alot of Obamas ideas I have heard...

but this one just kind of makes sense...

I don't begrudge poor kids getting an education lol, just in retrospect, military service as oppossed to the 50,000 in loans I have left, many, many years later lol, it sucks.

I did some work in Isreal for a time, mandatory service works, a comparisson to starship troopers is kind of comical, but it wasn't much different than that, it was kind of cool working with them.. they had fun, it was a good time, a decent right of passage, they come off it better not worse of, learn alot of real world skills

and it's not as queer as a traditional military system, being with women all day made it, alot more like school for survival and combat as oppossed to... well, the only reason I never joined the service...at the time a sever lack of women around... not my thing

I didn't say being fascist was a good thing, just that taking what DOES work from any system is okay, a big service for the nation could only be good... it gets people involved and, I have seen it in action, it's more functional, sorry but the chicks looked hot carrying guns lol and... unlike college there was something potentially useful in rela life happening

I tease the college experience but... unless your there as a serious scholar, well, you know, 18-20 good years to go out in the mountains, do some jogging learn how to defend yourself, be dispensed to help people, learn to work, get in shape, learn to get along...

it's not a bad thing

Misfit: Would there be any black kids/adults in these various programs?

I think that would be best.

I took the comment of reinstituting slavery as being LLoyd implying that this would end up as a black president slowly putting white men into slavery, a reversal of the days of black people being enslaved.

I did not take it at all as meaning Obama's goal of enlsaving EVERYone as a conquest of power.

I never said you insisted it as a conquest of power. Now that you've explained that you were seeing Llyod implying that Obama would enslave whites (which Llyod freaked on me about) as reversal for what happened years back. One of you two is backpedaling.

Its a grant by definition of the word, its not a tuition grant. The only college students it wouldnt help are ones without jobs. My case stands.

Here's an interesting article:

bulletin.aarp.org...

"[W]e are going to grow our foreign service, open consulates that have been shuttered and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy," said Obama. "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we have set. We have got to have a civilian national security force that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded."
