It's funny, you know: I was just thinking this morning that we need a registry of ATS translators and interpreters -- for the reasons already
mentioned. Online auto-translators are frankly not always very reliable, and are pretty useless if we have video or just audio in another language.
Now down to brass tacks.
I can translate and interpret Czech to English, and have a good working knowledge of Slovak. (While they are similar,
they are in fact separate languages; "Czechoslovak" is
not a language and never has been!) So, please feel free to add me to the list. Czech as
my "main" one, Slovak if we don't have anyone better qualified available. I could also communicate by phone/online systems with Czech-speaking people
and provide interpreting services if required.
Another important factor is that we definitely have members whose knowledge of English is very limited, but who might have something important to
share with our community. This could even relate to events they have witnessed or information/documents/diaries etc they possess that are not readily
available on the Web.
I also feel that this need for tanslators and interpreters exists throughout the more crucial parts of ATS, and not only within the aliens/ufos forum
boards. For that reason I'd suggest a clickable icon or notice on the main page. If we had a "click on a flag" feature on the main page somewhere,
when (for example) a Chinese speaker clicked on it, s/he would be taken to a special thread that would have all our translators' flags listed (again),
with a message in the appropriate language along the lines of:
If you have some important information for us here on ATS, please contact the following ATS member/translator.
This kind of communication could even be added in to the beginning of this thread. Admin can modify an old post, after all.
In the case of a new member who does not have the required 20 posts for U2U's, perhaps Admin could set up a means for these communications to take
place. It would be very unfortunate if new members did not pass on what they know because they didn't feel able to post possibly complex details in
English and had no way to let us know otherwise. True, they can write to a mod if they have less than 20 posts, but many may not know that.
I guess it could be done by having a special "Post in Your Own Language/Contact Translator" thread, which would allow members to do just that. It
would need to include instructions (with the flags) so they could do their post and also send a U2U to the appropriate translator. That might get a
bit messy but it's just an idea.
If you agree with my thoughts, it might be worth communicating with ATS admin to see what can be done. As far as I know, no other major conspiracy
site in the world offers a service where members can assist with so many languages. And who knows? At some future point, this could be a crucial
factor in getting information out to our mainly English-speaking members.
I also agree that members who are offering their services as translators/interpreters should be identified by having something below their names. eg:
ATS Translator/Interpreter:
Spanish & Portuguese
Anyway, I'll leave it with you.
Best regards,
Mike
