Without a proper cutoff command, propellant lines of the engine remained open, after it run out of fuel and stalled. As a result, the pressurization gas and remaining oxidizer continued escaping through the main nozzle and steering thrusters, causing the spacecraft to spin wildly. Although the engine was later cut off by a timer, the lack of delivered thrust also caused the flight control system to scrub the primary sequence for the separation between the reentry vehicle and the instrument module. Fortunately, a backup system did perform the separation some 10 minutes later, as temperature sensors detected the rising heat of reentry.

BB is full of ignorance. What is a school for? It is to educate....another way to 'deny ignorance'.

Many of us have, tried, to no avail, to school poor BB away from ignorance, into knowledge, through education.

Gorman, do you mean an anemometer? There are devices that can electronically measure wind speed, directon and pressure that are far more sophisticated, and much lighter, to be installed on a vehicle that requires every gram to be accounted for, prior to launch.

Secondly, how will the data from the anemometer....or the (harumph) Canon SLR camera, be transmitted back to Earth??? An Anemometer, at an airport, sends it's info via a wire....along the ground, to the receiving station. A Canon camera, either uses film, which you take somewhere to be processed, or it is digital, but it's recorded onto a memory card of some sort, which still needs to be put into a device to 'download' the info...

See? The problem is, we need to transmit, using very small-powered equipment, back to Earth. Everything has to be sent, digitally, over millions of miles.

And you think YOUR internet connection is slow????

Over 18,000 points for this thread. I think that is a slap in the face. I have put up what I thought to be intelligent or interesting topics and only get a few responses, I see other threads that warrant much more attention than they recieve, then here comes Big Brain, with a rant about Mars Phoenix not being on Mars, and he gets page after page after page, and more than 18000 points in less than a month! I have been on since Feb, and check out my points, and I am on here at least 4 nights a week!

space cadet.....I agree. For the record, I see B-B having less than 600 points, total. BUT, it's not really about points, anyway now, is it?

It's about denying ignorance. A mission I have failed, miserably at, in at least one case....in the case of B-B.

Why did I teach hundreds of people how to fly? Why did I become a Flight Instructor? Was it for money? Hell no! I was building experience and hours, to achieve my goal of becoming a professional airline pilot. BUT!!! I also cared, very much, about all of my students....I wished to impart my knowledge, best I knew how, so that they could learn to fly, and be safe at it.

When I was teaching, in the late 1970s, 'spin' training was not mandatory. I happened to think it was important, though. I made sure my students, even if we didn't do a full spin, knew what caused spins and more importantly, how to recognize an impending condition that would lead to a spin... because if you don't know the warnings, it can kill you. If we had an airplane that would not spin, then I taught how to recognize the preliminary signs.....but I also emphasized recovery techniques!! They go hand-in-hand.

I made sure, before I 'soloed' any primary student, that he/she knew the dangers of the stall/spin.

Moving on....these are basics, any pilot should well understand them. The rest, the other knowledge and skills, are built on that base.

What I am seeing, nowadays, is an apalling lack of scientific understanding....and this has been exhibited, not only by B-B, here at ATS, but by others on many different chat sites....even on the TV....especially as it pertains to space science.

While I am a fan of science fiction, I also tend to blame science fiction for this problem. Specifically, Hollywood's version of science fiction!!!

Kids, today (shaking head....) seem to either be tainted by what Hollywood movies have done, or just don't listen in Science class....or have poor teachers in said classes....not sure which.....

you CAN'T transmit low energy? have you heard of power conversion? I think I'm right on this: they take it, increase the power level, then convert it to a lower power level on Earth.

They did a thingy like that on the Titan probe. The main signal died, so they used another and converted the frequency to read.

I believe that's how fiber optics and the likes work.


Of course, if you think you can't transmit electricity wirelessly, be my guest. Live in the 90s if you must.

Well yes, all communication systems take the input signal, modulate it with a carrier wave then amplify to transmit it. Then the receiver does the reverse. You can use less power if you use more bandwidth too, as you can then use a lower signal to noise ratio.

And me, being paid to post actual facts on ATS? That'll be the day....

I think WW is just saying it's a slow and complex process, after all with mars it's a long way for the signal to weaken, and as such expensive and complex systems are needed. And in any case with an automated system speed probably isn't the most critical thing so that would be a slower system.

The formula IIRC (I should be able to remember, I had my communications module exam two weeks ago) is:

Speed = B log2 (1+S/N)

Speed is in kbit/s I think, B is bandwidth, S/N is the signal to noise ratio and log2 means log to the base 2, rather than 10 or e.

Shannon-Nyquist or something like that, one of those two in that things name at least.

If you don't believe what I have said, play the two videos at the same time. At the end stop the two videos about in the last frames.

Over the Shuttle fin on the left in youtube video, on the right in NASA's frauds' video, you can see the same little square stain.

The two videos show the same landing broadcasted from two different places.
