I just started seeing adds today. They are everywhere. They are also really annoying after being gone for a while.

So we know we cant use ad blockers, but why are we now seeing ads?

I think that is the question being asked.

And I am ok with them making money, I am of understanding however that once you contributed to a certain level you dont get pelted with ads, part of your 'terms and agreements' with ATS for handing over your blood sweat and tears ....so I am hoping its a glitch.

OK let's try this one more time by stating a true fact:

THERE IS ONLY ONE REASON TO HAVE ADS ON A WEBSITE AND THAT IS TO MAKE MONEY.

If you are experiencing more ads then more money is sought.

End of story.

Note that I make no judgment call on making money.

Given your flag meter, I can see that you don't know about this, but those of us with a substantial amount of stars & flags, thus showing quality contributions to the site, are exempt from ads here. Thus when we start to see them again, it alerts us that there is a problem with the coding.

Anyhoo, no more ads, so all is well...

Hi Hi -
I've got a question about quoting source material.

For a thread I'm developing: Teen Deaths Prompt Police Alert Over 'Choking Game' I would really like to post the lyrics to 'Missing' by Evanescence.

The hopelessness in this song and lyrics, go a LONG way to describing how teens are feeling and no, it's not just a gratuitous addition of a You Tube video, the lyrics are what I want to have stand out.

Is it possible to remain within T&C - and to post the Lyrics (with all due credit AND a link to the Evanscence Official Webpage)?

Thanks so much in advance
peace

Edit = bold

Why does ATS show ads of products I've been looking at online?

This happens a lot.

For instance, I have been looking on the internet for a new laptop.

When I logged on, on ATS, I saw ads of the very laptops I've been looking for.

The same thing with other products on other occassions.

How does the add on ATS know were I 've been looking on the net, if ATS is not allowing software that is snooping in my personal internet history, on my computer?

Can anyone explain, cause that is ridiculous.

PS, Im posting this here after my thread on The Board and Business forum was closed for this reason:

Please add yourt questions to the ATS Issues thread. There is a much better chance your question will be seen and answered there. Thread closed.

I see, so there is a bigger chance my question is seen and answered when it is posted in an existing thread, with 5000+ replies, opposed to it being in a new thread, wich appears on the front page with the question in the tilte?

That's real logical.

I thought it was harmless, now it seems that it needs burying.

Maybe the mod could've answered the question instead of closing the thread.

Hmm, my separate thread had four replies in 5 mins, here I still don't have any reply, so much for the BS reason why my thread was closed.

Well, what ATS and other sites that use advertising do, is use ad agencies. They don't select the ads themselves. They just embed a link (frame) on each page that goes out to the ad agency's server, and pulls an ad from there. None of the ad content is stored on ATS or specifically selected by them.

When your browser goes to display the page that ATS sent, it sends a request to the ad agency to fetch the image or flash animation or whatever goes in that frame. When the ad agency gets that request, they pick an ad from a stockpile of ads that they have been paid to provide, and send the one they think is most appropriate.

Now, when the ad agency gets that request from your browser, they also can get a 'referrer url'. That means they know that you're viewing a particular ATS page. They also get your IP address, and can optionally store 'cookies' in your browser to further identify you as a unique individual.

They don't just discard that information -- they store it in a database and use it to refine what ads they choose to deliver to you. And since many different web sites can use the same ad agencies, they build up a 'picture' of your online interests. This helps them deliver more specific marketing to you.

Note that none of this occurs on ATS's servers, or with any software that ATS uses or distributes.

Hope that helps explain it a bit.

Yes, I understand, but you can't tell me that it is not ATS that is allowing this software to run on their site and harass the members.

I find it extremely annoying, and ATS should do something about it.

If you think I can't tell you that, then you don't understand what I just tried to explain. The software doesn't run on ATS's site. ATS has no specific control over the software. It's purely a connection between the browser running on your machine, and a third-party ad agency. All ATS does is put a place-holder frame on their pages, with links to an agency that provides that ad content. Just like 10,000 other websites on the internet.

Isn't that exactly what I said, ATS is allowing this aren't they?

I don't care how many other sites are doing this, it is annoying and it shouldn't belong on this site.

Fair enough. I'm not going to argue that advertising isn't annoying.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Without it there would probably be no ATS.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.
