First of all I would like to state that it is with much regret that I make this post, I enjoy ATS and always try to abide by the T&C and recognise
that it is imperative that we have such if we are to ensure respectful debate at all times.
However, like most people there are times and on the odd occassion certain things that I don't agree with or that need clarification.
But still the T&C have to be adhered to, I understand and accept that.
What I can't accept is being ignored and brushed aside when asking legitimate questions in a respectful manner.
In a recent thead initiated by a member of staff,
masqua, titled "Profanity and Censor Circumvention on the Rise" I asked why certain
'swear' words are automatically censored out and some are not and what would happen if someone uses one of the 'swear' words which isn't
automatically censored out?
Surely a perfectly reasonable and legitimate question, especially considering that warnings are being handed out as a result of the subsequent
enforcement of this part of T&C.
www.abovetopsecret.com...
I also stated that I fully understand the need for respectful debate at all times and that surely it depends on the intent and circumstances that a
swear word is used, they can be used to great effect when wanting to express the passion one feels about a subject.
And bear in mind just how passionate most of us ATS members can get.
But I don't want to be an active member of a site that allows swearing of all kinds, anytime.
There are the odd 'swear' words that I occassionally use here on ATS, but in my humble opinion, in the right context and not in an insulting,
inflammatory or derogatory manner.
Some get censorred out, some don't.
In addition Sceptic Overlord has used the odd profanity and indeed included a 'swear' word in the title of one of his threads, to great effect I may
add.
During the course of thread it was also asked what internet / text abbreviations are permissable.
As stated in that thread, I don't want to be a part of a site that allows people to say 'FU' or 'STFU' etc but I don't see a problem with
'WTF' or 'PMSL' etc.
Again, it's about context in my opinion.
So to summarise it was asked if it is ok to use words not automatically censored out, if not which words are not ok to use etc and what about internet
abbreviations.
Now I would have thought that clarification here would be best for all concerned ensuring consistency from all Mod's etc and making it easier for
them to police and for us to post.
Pretty simple really.
Only one problem.
That would require some sort of feedback.
After initially being told that things were under discussion, despite several prompts, we received no feedback for 2 days when then being told that
these things can take time etc due to 'real life' responsibilities of the staff.
I fully understand that and have no problem whatsoever with it, just would maybe like the odd post saying 'we haven't forgot about this, we're
still discussing'.
Another 48 hours passed and I then again asked what was happening?
Another 'super' member of staff replied stating that No Profanity at all was allowed, they are still discussing internet abbreviations and the
thread is closed!
Very abrubt and within the spirit of Deny Ignorance I must say.
Now my point is that quite reasonable and legitimate questions which arose from a staff initiated thread remain unanswered and no attempt whatsoever
has been made to answer these questions.
I have got the distinct impression that the Staff are either uncomfortable or unwilling to deal with this and would prefer me to ignore the issue and
let it go away.
Unfortunately I will not.
Whatever the answer is I will abide with it, whether I like it or not is irrelevant.
But a 'No Profanity at all on ATS' statement is not answering the question.
And I fail to see why there is such reluctance in answering such legitimate questions and why such an arrogant, condescending tone was required.
All that is being asked for is clarification and transparency, surely that is within the scope of 'Deny Ignorance'?
