Consider maybe these egyptians had either seen too much, or these Americans were very, very on edge...

Hmmm?

Carrying vital military supplies to one of the hottest conflict zones going right now, travelling through a VERY confined area where they can only travel one ship at a time, in a region known for using small boats as weapons/bombs, approached by a boat that failed to respond to all commands NOT to approach........ I'd have to go with "slightly on edge".

Why would a vessel laden with cargo from South Africa bound for Iraq need to pass through the Suez? The most viable route would be along the East African coast to the Persian Gulf

edit to add: Thinking about this point a little more, is there any indication in the story of whether the ship was headed Northward into the Meditteranean? If so, these South African MRAP vehicles could have been bound for Israel?

It depends on WHERE in South Africa she came from, where ELSE she stopped to pick up supplies, if she had an escort then where she met her escort. Cape Algulhas is also a pretty nasty area to transit, even in a big ship. You have the Atlantic and Indian Ocean meeting there. They have been known to get rogue waves 30 meters high in that region, on top of monster winter storms.

Regardless if it was a container ship or a warship, small arms or otherwise...someone's trigger finger was very itchy. This says alot about the tension and ''intelligence" that that must exist in the region. Maybe the story about Syria lining up on the Lebanese border and the endless talk about Iran is closer to the truth than MSM would have us believe.

Possibly a bit itchy. I am the last guy to stick up for the U.S. when it's caught being imperialistic, but I am not yet threatened by this story.

Look, if they truely asked the boat to back off and it didn't... oh well.

Well if I may; There was likely a memo put out that mentioned Hezbollahs 40 days of mourning had ended. I would have been on edge myself and would not have let them get to me if I'm carrying MRAPs and above the law.

consider this a false flag report by BBS. Move along.

You know the thing i dislike the most? is someone telling me that i need to move along because they think this or that, happening more and more now,

I will determine if i need to move along or not when i have all the facts i need, im sorry if this seems a little over the top but i have a mind of my own i do not need you telling me something is a false flag i can determine that for myself thanks..

It sounds a lot like black-ops para-military activity. Why would a cargo vessel fire on anyone? And why would it even have the capability of firing on anyone?

I would say that this ship, launched in 2005 and named after the Patriot Act, is full of military contractors, their equipment and weapons. It may also be a mobile operations center for CIA, Special Forces and who knows what else floating around in the Middle East disguised as a cargo ship.

You make good points, but the problem of piracy makes at least small arms a smart idea for any vessel in that region, as DL suggested.

Shar, could you please change your avatar? It's endlessly distracting, particularly when paired with posts like this one.

It's funny how American ships justify blasting away at folks just cause they MIGHT happen to float like a terriorist.

We all know about the Cole... but every wandering ship on the high sea cannot be catagorized as a terrorist plot. Especially when you are armed to the teeth in their waterways. What trigger happy militia was at the helm this time to bodyguard the cargo of dope headed for this country --Blackwater? -- LOL

Sounds like a below the belt scam by this Goverment and media outlets to keep the fear on ignorant Americans to me.

I think the growing pirate threat could have played into this as well as the Cole incident.

Currently, in places like Indonesia and the Africa east coast, pirates are raiding even large container ships.

There seems to be debate over arming merchant ships partially due to the fact that shooting in waters belong to any given nation falls under the laws of that nation.

Lonewolf stated that Global container is located in Garden City,Ny which is about 5 mins from me. Maybe I'll go there dressed as an Egyptian asking if they want to purchase any merchandise. It's outside in my double parked conoe.

For starters why would a little boat try to go up to such a huge vessel and sell them merchandise? If these guys wanted to buy stuff I think they would've went to the mall or some superstore not Ishmael in the Suez.

Alot of Cargo ships are armed for various reasons such as piracy. This guy must've had rocks in his head to approach them. Doesn't mean he deserved to die but if you ignore the warnings you pay the price. You don't see me going to the zoo and jumping in the lions cage to pet him.

I honestly marvel at what really goes through peoples mind.

How dare the evil Americans try to defend them selves? They are supposed to let all those poor people of the world just kill them, since we don't want to hurt they wittle feewings. America is too unpopular already, we should all just kill ourselves since we insulted some extremeists.

I doubt the terrorists would like what all you America haters are saying, if you were to say it to thier face, well if you did that you wouldn't be saying much of anything after that would you? Examples come to mind, Nick Berg, Daniel Pearl, ring any bells? Do YOU like to be talked down to, or have it implied you need help cuz your so helpless?

This story will change 20 more times before they are done with it, but only to try and save thier credibility later, they'd LOVE to print "American soldiers caught eating the flesh of new born Iraqi babies!" but, with no pictures to back it up there is no story and instead of hurting us, they look bad, that's the only reason they change the lies they origignaly printed, in hopes of stirring up some more America hatred.

Look how many Americans here are American haters! Hate the government if you must, not the brave men and women who have decided to defend liberty, with thier lives if need be, and lets not ask them to throw away thier lives just so we don't offend those you see as beneath you and needing your emotional welfair!

Well, i used to work on boats like that at a port in brandon, florida. They usually carried wood for fences and plywood and those cranes unloaded them. Those boats are mostly cargo hold.
If that helps anything.

As I like to say, " I'm white Christian and American, the worlds most hated species."

This is exactly what every country and people think. Just in case anybody missed the current events in the last few years.

I personally have lost my compassion and am sck of hearing everyone whine and stick up for everyhting and everybody else.

I live here and that's all that concerns me. My God, Family, Country and fellow Americans.

Amen brother.

You gotta stand up for yourself at some point, if your moral, and charitable, and do your best to love your neighbor, who's intrests are being served by hateing yoru fellow Americans?

Terrorists will use anyone to achieve thier evil goals, I'd shoot even if it was a mother and child and 20 orphans that acted like they were going to blow me up after seeing my warnings, I'd try to disable the boat and only kill the driver, but I wouldn't sacrifice the lives of many sailors, just to keep America from getting bad press either.

Well loyalists did the same thing in the 1770's, only they didn't fair too well after the war, it wasn't as pleasent back "home" in Brittan for them, or anywhere else the went in the empire. If I was an America hater I'd probably leave now, Canada will take you I think.

I wonder how big the egyptian "merchant" barge was because those container ships are huge. I'd imagine they'd be shooting down on the barge from at least fifty feet.

However, had they been suicidal terrorists I suppose they wouldln't have stopped their bomb laiden boat after only one of them had been shot.

First off this is sad yes but you have to remember that in todays world you can't take no chances what so ever.

Second you have to remember what happened when a so called civilian ship approached a U.S war ship before it didn't end to well for 26 service men and wemon. This is nothing and the reason i say this is because we did what we could to prevent it im sure and we can't take any chances in todays world so stop acting as if this is cruel because its not. its sad that someone had to die but its better then 26 more crew dieing.

.....There is a "Global Patriot" registered to the New York-based Global Container Lines and, according to the company Web site, the vessel trades between the United States, the Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the East Africa. Company representative Homruz Shayegan told The Associated Press by telephone from New York that he had no information on the incident...

..According to the Egyptian naval official, the ship had sailed from Dubai and was transporting used military equipment. It had completed crossing canal and was in a waiting area, known as the Zenobia Lighthouse, in preparation to enter the Mediterranean when the incident took place.

Fisherman and small motor boats constantly ply the waters of the canal looking to sell cigarettes and other local products to passing ships.

www.foxnews.com...

If this is true and they were just looking to sell cigarettes this is awful. But, 1 thing I would think that we would know that they do these kinds of things so 2 I would think we would know the difference. I wonder what type of warning we actually gave before we open fired and killed.

I just heard the owner of that little boat made a living by selling cigarrettes to various ships in the area. Its a well known fact in that area.
WE are getting too edgey, imo.
