I think you forget they want us there to help fight the Taliban unlike in Iraq. The Taliban are the drug lords growing poppy to produce herion so they can make money. And the forces there are small and not every where.

WOW..

Thats an "interesting" pile of bull crap.

When the TALIBAN were in charge of the country ... they totally wiped out poppy production.. the moment we went in there to secure the country for the Unocal Nat Gas Pipeline... The country had a RECORD production of Poppy.. and every year since it has increased..

What kind of Logic is that???

Before we go in Taliban and no Poppy production.. We go in .. take out the Taliban and every year has seen record poppy production... and you blame the Taliban!!

I think anyone familiar with Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Iran Contra affair is not suprised to see this happen ..

This would cause a economic crisis like you wouldn't believe and the president would have some heads on the platter of his choosing after he ordered the National Guard to force the ports open. Every American would be hurt financially from this and its the dumbest idea yet.

I agree that we need to get out of Iraq and that Bush is prolonging it for his own reasons. The thing that does tick me off is that his little misadventure in Iraq is keeping us from dealing with the real threats to this country. We need to find a way to stop Bush without hurting ourselves.

A year after Assadullah Wafa assumed his position as the governor of the volatile poppy-producing province of Helmand, Mr. Wafa is being replaced at the behest of President Karzai himself. Gulab Mangal, the former governor of Paktika and most recently the governor of Laghman province, has been chosen to replace Wafa effective immediately.

Afghan officials have said Wafa was removed for ineffective leadership and for his failure to crush the influence of nacro-mafia gangs and the Taliban. He himself even requested to be transferred late last year. His new position is within the complaints department in the National Security Directorate based in Kabul.

This is from a Afghan Newspaper seem they think theres a Taliban and nacro-mafia gang connection to the drugs.
plus this headline from the same place "5 Taliban leaders break out of prison"
www.afgha.com.../6341

"Five senior Taliban leaders, four from Helmand and one from Zabul, escaped from Pul-i-Charki prison overnight, breaking reports from Kabul say."

Would you also agree that the way we have been "dealing" with the "REAL" threats to this country... IS creating more "REAL" threats?

And I am pretty sure Bushie is not alone in his reasons....

Yes, The Idiot is not worried about our security or he would lock down the borders and not have tried to sell our ports and security to a Arab country. Every aspect of the war on terror is fought wrong. Say 9/11 happened by the letter as Bush says it did what would you have done if you were President?

I'm all for ending the war as well, but I really do not see how the union should get involved. Their responsibility is the welfare of their workers, not our government's dealings overseas, but hey if it works more power to them. I hope it does.

So just who IS responsible for the government's actions overseas?

Or, to put it another way:

"Who Will Be Held responsible for our government's actions overseas?"

The short answer, although it might seem unfair to many, is: Us.

And many of us, those members of the union that, as a majority voted to approve this action (If the story is true) have begun to realize that thier welfare is being put at risk by this prolonged fiasco called the war on terror in Iraq/Afghanistan.

The world is small and conflicts tend to spread thier poison far from thier homelands.

It is not too far-fetched to realize that, as a dock-worker, you could easily find yourself on the frotline of the next WOT-inspired "terror attack".

IMO, the union is fully justified to voice its concern for its members and take whatever action it feels best expresses those concerns.

I disagree if they wanted to protest that they fear for there saftey they would strike til there was proper security to protect them. And not use the Mayday May 1st a amensty agenda holiday to do it.

Its funny how they say this

It is doubly important that this mobilization of labor's power is to take place on May Day, the international workers day, which is not honored in the U.S. Moreover, the resolution voted by the ILWU delegates opposes not only the hugely unpopular war in Iraq, but also the war and occupation of Afghanistan (which Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and Republican John McCain all want to expand).

They support Barack Obama it even says it on there web site they even have a pdf file for it.www.ilwu.org...
I think there niggedt thing is May Day, the international workers day, which is not honored in the U.S.

Right On!!

It's nice to see the unions grow a pair!!!

Now if we can get an actual Labor Party in America we might have something.

Don't be ashamed if you work for a living. Most of us do. You know who they send to fight their wars right??

Stand up and say no, hell no we won't go! Fight it yourself George and Dick we'll watch and tell you who won.

So a union that is supposed to look out for its employees is sticking its nose into politics, sounds about half stupid to me. They should spend more time looking out for their works and less time on things that don't concern their primary focus. Call me crazy but it seems absurd that they are going to adversely affect so many people for their own political ends.

They're only going to strike during the day shift. They wanted to strike for the entire day but cowardice prevailed.

la.indymedia.org...

In a February 22 letter to AFL-CIO president John Sweeney, ILWU International president Robert McEllrath reported that at a recent coast-wide union meeting, “One of the resolutions adopted by caucus delegates called on longshore workers to stop work during the day shift on May 1, 2008 to express their opposition to the war in Iraq.”

What most do not realize is that we are already fatally wounded by this war economically, and the powers that be want to start one with Iran?

I applaud their commitment by doing this. I see that people are showing their disgust for what is transpiring and taking an action step without creating a civil war.

Only way to stop a rogue group or government is economically, and not by war.
