Found a site with alot of information on Contrails etc with links from NOAA and NASA and USAF etc. Not all links work but the info is solid. As an example here is a NOAA image showing contrails. Mind you this says very little about speed etc but is still neat and informatice none the less.

I was replying to a post that suggested the faster an object is travelling, the louder the sonic boom, which is wrong. I wasn't talking about visual acquisition or anything else, I was simply replying to the specifics of the post.

I have just tried a search of the newspaper's website, but nothing relevant comes up, old news I suppose. The artists impression shown here, is the same shape though, and when I saw the actual aircraft, it was only a few weeks after having seen the image in the newspaper.
That's all I'm afraid,

Horsegiver.

I'm not saying that you didn't see what you saw, OP. I think maybe you were seeing a replay with time lapse, making the contrail seem to move faster than it was. What I DO know about the U-2 and the SR-71 is that they fly above (as in above) contrail-producing altitudes and conditions once the mission is underway. What I understand about Aurora (and Aurora derivatives) is that the engines burn with very little visible exhaust signature and they fly mostly out of the atmosphere. Of course, I might just be full of shiite.

not really I think your on track with the info on contrails and where they form though that changes from day to day and its 100% accurate in where they will or will not form.

Completely agree its just hard to keep track of what is or isn't being asked some of the time. Thanks for clarifying Willard.
