Yes, there was a power down of the World Trade Center the weekend before 9/11. I believe it was for the whole weekend. Lets hope this is no coincidence.

FPL spokeswoman is saying it "significant equipment failure"
Says 700,000 affected at the peak. She's not saying any connection to Turkey Point.

"system worked perfectly to protect the system"

and they haven't completed their investigation.

Does anyone recall the thread posted here in the past 48 hours or so where they were concerned something was about to happen in Florida? I tried the search engine at the top of this page but did not find the thread. I did not open it but remember seeing it just the same. Now I am interested...

I'm surprised I didn't see it. I would have agreed with him. If you find it please help me find it; If it turns out the post doesn't exist... GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!

I live in miami and my apartment is right next to FPL. The power plant is like 50 ft away from my door. There was an explosion around 2 hours ago. I was in my living room and saw sparks and fire coming from the power plant and then there was a big explosion. The power just came back on.

So now that it's been a few hours can you still see smoke, burnt material, or emergency personnel on the scene? Can you get a picture?

Theres no smoke or anything. I heard sirens a few times but no one ever came.

news is scrolling at the bottom of screen "homeland security monitoring blackout closely"..."fear of looting as nightfall nears"

right north of me is 79th street. they're showing a live feed. Horrible intersection...

I'm a little pissed by that headline. Why do they think that looting is automatically going to happen?? Are we really that barbaric in South Florida? And it's not like we're all in a total blackout.

and since Homeland Security is monitoring, maybe I did indeed hear fighter jets fly by earlier.

This is something to be very worried about...no lights at nightfall! This could resemble a scene from the movie "Escape from New York." before it's all said and done. I hope not. Good luck to the folks in Florida as the evening approaches.

Just remain calm and prepared... it's the United States... stuff happens. Here's what FPL wants out (from their site).

"Florida Power & Light Company reports that it expects to restore service to most customers affected by the current outage within approximately two hours. Customers who have signed up for the On Call service may not have the use of those affected appliances for an additional hour. The system is being restored in a systematic process to ensure its safe operation at all times. The company does not have a cause for the outage, which is affecting several hundred thousand customers but the system responded as designed to ensure the outage was contained. We ask you to please call us only in an emergency situation so we can keep our lines open for emergency calls."

it's not going to be like that. FPL is saying power will be on to most by 5:30pm and like I said above, it's not a total blackout. Many areas still have power.

I havent went through and read all of the posts...

But I live here in South Flordia. I was in English class when our power went out which of course us kids didnt care so much since we got out of school work.. haha. It lasted here for about two hours..

But it started getting sooo hot in there and we were trying to call our parents to pick us up and stuff and none of our cell phones would work to call out, only text and occasionally a few calls would come in but you couldnt call out.

All of the metro movers (like a tram) and the metro-rails (like a train) shut down and like me, thats the way most of us get home from school.

Finally some of us got a hold of our parents to pick us up. But man, the traffic is soooo bad. And the stop lights wasnt working...

Too bad it didnt stay out till tomorrow also
.... then we would have gotten out of school. lol

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says that the two Florida Power & Light nuclear reactors at its Turkey Point power point 30 miles south of Miami automatically shut down. Two other power plants farther north -- the Crystal River reactor and St. Lucie twin reactors -- in the state continued to operate, although officials at those two facilities noticed the grid disturbance.

Kenneth Clark, a spokesman at the NRC regional office in Atlanta, says the two reactors were automatically shut down and in safe standby.

FPL in several media interviews estimated that power should be up statewide within 10 hours.

"We don't know whether the grid disturbance caused the units to shut down or that their shut down caused the grid disturbance," said Kenneth Clark, a spokesman at the NRC regional office in
Atlanta. He said the two reactors were automatically shut down and in safe standby.
"There are no safety concerns. The reactors shut down as designed," said Clark in a telephone interview. He said both reactor continued to have offsite electric power. He said two coal-burning power plants at Turkey Point also shut down.

Im going with the idea that this was some natural oops, with no conspiracy to add too it.
Now thats my opinion.
That being said, heres my attempt at devil's advocate.
Much like the power down at the WTC,many things could have been done during that time period.
One could wonder what bad things were being done or set up during this power outage.
I suppose time will tell of course.

Well today is the 15th anniversary of the original WTC bombing. How do you explain THAT! (It is, but I'm joking with you) I did see something suspicious on a webcam in miami though.

Could have depending on other parameters.

"Shutdown of nuclear reactor for safety reasons triggered the outage."

Same answer as above.

"Bad weather caused the outage (no bad weather in broward, hot and gorgeous, only now a little cloudy)"

Lightning, rain etc. can cause an outage far from your area and you would be affected due to several things.
I'll touch on those when we have some more information.

"and I keep hearing the Miami mayor, saying it was "technical" and not an emergency."

Thats a common response from someone who doesn't know zilch about electricity or a bulk power system.

And . . . it's not an emergency until it happens to you.

Public servants make some funny comments sometimes.
My favorite was when the Energy Czar in the 2nd big NY outage and surrounding areas said, "I had no idea such a thing could happen."

Anybody in the biz knows it could happen given the right set of circumstances.

Don't sweat the nuclear reactor going off line, they have multiple small local generation units on station as well as incoming lines to supply power to the reactor and to assist in getting generation units on line.
A safety device for the reactor.
As well as you can't make electricity unless you have electricity.

30 years + in the biz....

I just got this confirmed by a Turkey Point employee my girlfriend knows. He said "all power plant safety measures worked exactly as expected", and there is no problem at the plant.

So if anyone's worrying about a meltdown or anything like that, you can relax.
