I was reading that theirs still a lot of people with out
then read Disney is with out power as well
hope no body was on the rides at the time

last time we were with out power for a day it turned out
that there was a crack in the insulator which during the night
got frost on it and in the morning when it started heating up
the water got in through the crack
and poof no power

don't think that that happened there though just a thought

About 4.4 million customers across South Florida were affected, Florida Power and Light Co. officials said. The outage struck shortly after 1 p.m. ET as scattered thunderstorms passed through the region. Stan Johnson, a spokesman for the North American Electric Reliability Council, said eight power plants were off-line across the region.

see he said 8 plants were out.

So how do you lose 8 separate power plants? This really stinks. I know storms can do damage, but come on...half the state? This squirrel must be super powered and radioactive with superspeed.
Having had to drive home through NYC through the 2003 outage, I hope everyone, unlike me, listens to the radio and not their CD player or IPOD. I had no idea until I was home for about 15 minutes...

Pretty good excuse for the airline that I'm flying out of Denver.

The plane that was supposed to take me out to D.C. Was coming from Florida and its delayed for 2 hours!!

Ironically as part of my trip I'm going to Jacksonville hopefully they are not affected by this.

My trip already started bad, too funny that I told my boss to fly on Sunday and he said no, now we going to miss a meeting. He can't even look at my face.

Hey All, checking in from Western Broward County. No power outages here. I was at school picking up one child when the news broke, after getting him, I went directly to my other son's middle school which was on a "soft lockdown" and took him out for early dismissal. We're home, got our back up power supply and cell phones charging.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened at Turkey Point that triggered all of this

Well, seems like a nuclear reactor has shut down. That intern effected the 8 power plants. Shut down for safety reasons it seems.

MIAMI (AP) - Florida's largest electric company shut down a nuclear reactor south of Miami for safety reasons Tuesday, causing sporadic power outages covering large portions of the state that could last well into the night. More than 3 million people are affected, the state says.

Nuke plant shutdown spurs Florida outage

Nuke plant shutdown spurs Florida power outages

MIAMI — A Florida Power & Light spokesman says the widespread power outages affecting Florida today started when the company shut down a nuclear reactor south of Miami for safety reasons, but did not explain further.

Spokesman Bob Coleman says the company shut down two nuclear generators at its Turkey Point plant south of Miami.

He told St. Petersberg cable news station BayNews9 "When that happened, the entire state of Florida began to run low on electricity."

He estimates that power should be fully restored statewide within 10 hours.

Today is a nuclear all-skate in every story it seems....strange days.

Peace

I am also hearing reports now that a major power line conduit that stretches along "Aligator Alley" has had an issue. Alligator alley is the stretch from Broward county west across the state of Florida. These power lines are absolutly huge towers that have huge power capacities that pump power in/out from southeast florida. These are the kind of towers that when you stand under them, you can feel and hear the power going through them. Major power conduits.

so far I've heard "tranmission line" failure that triggered the outage.

Shutdown of nuclear reactor for safety reasons triggered the outage.

Bad weather caused the outage (no bad weather in broward, hot and gorgeous, only now a little cloudy)

and I keep hearing the Miami mayor, saying it was "technical" and not an emergency.

Even transmisssion line difficulties or sub-station troubles can cause overload on the grid... protocols kick in'... sometimes regions are affected... lights go out. An 03 clip...

I live in miami and my apartment is right next to FPL. The power plant is like 50 ft away from my door. There was an explosion around 2 hours ago. I was in my living room and saw sparks and fire coming from the power plant and then there was a big explosion. The power just came back on.

Well, this does not bode well.

Time to kick up terror a knotch, huh? Could be. Of course i cant be sure, but its food for thought.

I have a knot in my stomach and i dont live in Florida.

Who in the world can make a rationalized informed guess?

1)Its real. Something malfunctioned.
2) Sun >>>>>kill shot
3) Al Qaeda put out a power grid (B00!)
4) Iran, Russia, China? Electro Magnetic Pulse?
5)Cheney, Bush?

Such times we live in!!

Officials are reporting that it could take several more hours to get power back up in Southern Florida.....nite-fall in Miami without power? Yikes!

The other thing that is weird is, Why shut down a nuclear power facility if there is no danger to it? Makes me think that maybe that there was maybe some-type of computer virus running throughout the system....time will tell.

My thinking exactly dgtempe.

It will be very interesting to hear what officials say is the reason "A Nuclear Power Plant Shutdown'. There had to be a possible overload at stake for a protocol such as this to be implemented. Has this ever happened before? Could be hacking by those that are our enemy and are testing our infrastructure for cracks. I'm getting ahead of myself, I know. Will wait and see.

What a year this is going to be folks!

local coverages are reporting anywhere from 2 to 10 hours before power is fully restored across the state.

Seems many places are coming online right now.

Now that is an interesting theory. A computer virus scheduled to take down a few plants...this would be a great dry run since you can blame the storm and not the computer equipment.

Weren't there a series of bizzare power outages at the WTC in 2001 some monthe before 911?

Just thinking aloud........probably nothing more than a glich at a nuclear power plant.........!

I'm in Miami, and my lights flashed, cable went out. I think much of it, so I took a bath. As I'm in the tub the wind starts howling and planes and copters are overhead. Then I come out and hear about the outage on the news. I'll see what comes of it. Explosions don't suprise me...

So now that it's been a few hours can you still see smoke, burnt material, or emergency personnel on the scene? Can you get a picture?

Does anyone recall the thread posted here in the past 48 hours or so where they were concerned something was about to happen in Florida? I tried the search engine at the top of this page but did not find the thread. I did not open it but remember seeing it just the same. Now I am interested...
