Strange Light/Object over the Bay Area [pics]

I don't know why you didn't see the explanation for this but they are aircraft contrails lit from below by the setting/rising sun. The underside (the side we can observe from the ground) is at a high enough altitude to allow the setting sun illuminate the underside of the vapor trail hence brightening the side we can see.

I live in the East Bay not far from where you saw this object. A few years back we saw the same exact thing. We were up on the university hill overlooking Hayward, early evening, and noticed the same type of object low in the sky, looking towards San Francisco. It was bright orange, appeared stationary, and was visible long after sunset. The only difference was I remember it being a little more horizontal (I think). We watched it for an hour or so, until we had to leave for home. I took a few photos, which I'll try to find and post asap. It was kinda weird. The local observatory cams have caught some weird objects similar to these zipping around low in the sky over town, too.

Thanks for the pic, that may have been possible if we had not seen the spotlight I had written about. i have no doubts that this was some sort of vehicle. My guess is it was some military high altitude thing.
