A big thank you to all of you who recalled i was an NIU student and checked to see if i was ok, to all of you that sent me u2u's or messages in the initial thread i made about the issue with kind words. there has been an outpouring of support, and as a member for over 4 years i cant tell you how touched i was by how much love you all have sent my way over the past 2 days.

but as we have seen, with every good act a bad one comes along as well.

the Westboro Baptist church has posted a huge statement on their website thanking God for the carnage at my College, thanking God for the death of each victim, and thanking God for the shooter. Why? because as they say "God hates F*gs." and our school has support groups for lesbians, gays, and bisexuals. so according to them, we deserved it because God hates us for not hating them.

on top of all of this, they are going to pickett each of the victims funerals!!!!!!!!!!!!! this makes me outraged and sad at the same time.
i cant believe it. as if we all havent gone through enough already.

i am a christian. an eastern orthodox christian to be exact. i used to be lutheran, that is what i was raised. but a year ago i converted to Eastern Orthodoxy.

Christianity, at least not the type i associate myself with does not support hatred of any kind...nor does it express gratitude to God for such things. and in keeping these teachings in mind, i am mustering up all of my strength not to possess hatred for the members of this so called church.

Go here to see Westboro's statement

I dont know what we can do to stop this. i for one am going to each of the funerals to support the families and shield them from this hatred as best as i can.

well iam an atheist. but to say it is ok for someone to be killed by a crazed madman and then associate it with their sexuality- even if it had nothing to do with it- is just wrong in mho. only reinforces my belief religion is eviland they force their belief on you. i thought religion was supposed to support human life not desecrate it no matter what that persons beliefs were.
how many students were black?
wonder why (the rev?) al sharpton hasn't said anything about it oh and jesse jackson
i would bet if a few black kids were killed they would be in there screaming
but i have no idea if any were so i can only surmise

Glad to hear that you're ok! My heart goes out to all the families that have lost loved ones.

As for the "church people", I'm surprised that they haven't been thrown in jail or sued for everything they have yet... The logic, or lack thereof, that they use to justify what they say and do and say it's how god feels is apparently beyond my level of comprehension. I would think the families could get a restraining order or something to prevent these "people" from showing up at the funerals. They've already suffered a great loss, and there is no reason for them to have to suffer more just because of a few wackos.

TO BIGFOOT:
none of the students who were shot to my knowledge were black. i know for a fact that none of those who died were black.
al sharpton and jessie jackson im sorry to say, only care what happens to the people they are concerned about.

in my opinon you being an athiest does not deflect from you having a sense of morality. my father is an athiest, he is open to the idea of a God, however currently he sees no proof and only believes in the theories of science. my mother is a devout christian..lutheran to be exact...and they have been married for 26 years as of this april. i believe in science completely as well as there being a God. i guess i took parts from both of them.

anyways...
we dont deserve this hatred being thrown at us. as a woman, as an american, as a christian, as an niu student, i will support the rights of my fellow human beings to love who they want to love. that is between them and God. none of my buisness. i will not HATE someone because of their sexuality. and as far as im concerned i think pastor phelps "doth protest to much"...he is hiding something.

These pitiful people had plans to come to Corpus Christi a few weeks ago to celebrate the deaths of three Navy men who died in a helicopter crash here. By the time they arrived, the street leading to the Navy base was filled with vets, military families and many other supporters. The WBC (Westboro Baptist Cult) decided not to picket and left the area.

These people are neither a church nor are they Christians. They are simply an inbred family cult that enjoys enraging others with their hate speech. Don’t buy into it. Wear your school colors with pride and just ignore them. They want you to react emotionally. Turn your collective backs on them and morn your dead. Ignoring them is the best revenge.

Those people are sick.

They give Christians a bad name.

Matthew 7:
21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

my being an atheist has nothing to do with this. i just do do not believe in an all being unproven god. that aside i believe those who have a religion are noble because they show they have belief in basic human rights- and also have very good morals and do good things for humanity. i do alsoeven if i don't believe in god
i feel for all those families- i lost my dad to a stroke- i can't even imagine losing a child to a senseless act of violence while at school
if that person didn't kill himself but did someone i love he would never make court
but my point was why if a religion values human life so much condone a horrific act against a persons sexuailty? not saying they were the target- but if the church did make that statement they should be dispelled
for the other 2 jerks why do they only speak up when it is people who are black killed? if they are so religious shouldn't they speak up for everyone and not just blacks?
and just what churches are they revs of btw?
not trying to turn the topic just wondering why religion is ok in some eyes but not in others? seems to me religion is only ok when it is pertanant for them to get you to try and believe their beliefs
which are ficticious.
and thank you for answering my belief in your opening sentence

It's funny, because they praise God's wrath, yet when one of their children gets smacked in the head with a drink, you don't see them rejoicing. Someone should call 'HYPOCRITE' on them.

In the video, one of the guy's very clearly says that if he saw someone get run over by a car, he would rejoice.

These people embody everything wrong with the human race.

i just know that sometimes on forums when someone mentions they are an atheist they sometimes get preached to and what not, and i just wanted to state right away since you already knew i was a christan that i respect your choice and feel you have a valid opinon with regards to morality.. because i know some do not feel athiests can be moral. i am not one of them.

that is a tough call phoenix
they were serving there country whether they believe it was right or not. some were most definitely wrong. others just doing their job so i really have no opinion on that. but aren't our troops doing the same thing?
and digitalgirl just because i don't believe in god does not make me immoral-ty for understanding that- atheism only means i don't believe in god- i would risk my life to save another person and have done so a few times when i was a fireman.

I swear those guys use their children for protection, if they didn't have innocent children with them, then somebody might have done something violent to them by now.

Why publicise them, why link their site? All you are doing is letting people know about them and giving them hits for their site.

They are probably delighted about your post. Just ignore them.

Your college can do the same thing--- turn out in so many numbers, that they cannot get near the funeral services.

OMG. These kids need to be taken away from those people. Hearing the words coming from those children's mouths?! I just wanted to wash their mouths out with soap! It was intresting that the kids didn't know the definiton of fags(sorry) and the one that did was sooo wrong! I just don't understand how people can be filled with such hate? Also, if they are so against sex why do they have so many children? Don't mean to get religious on you, but Jesus died for ours sins so we wouldn't go to hell. God forgives us, and loves us no matter what is what the bible teaches, not hate... maybe they hate themselves and are taking it out on everyone else?
