I can't remeber the exact craft but a plate was attached that gave a road map to earth. I believe it was Carl Sagan that was responsible and he later regretted doing it considering the potential for hostile aliens.

You're thinking of the plaques attached to the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft:

The Pioneer plaques are a pair of gold anodized aluminum plaques which were placed on board the Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 spacecraft, featuring a pictorial message from humanity, in case either Pioneer 10 or 11 are intercepted by extraterrestrial beings. The plaques show the nude figures of a human male and female along with several symbols that are designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft.

The Pioneer spacecraft were the first human-built objects to leave the solar system. The plaque is attached to the antenna support struts in a position that shields it from erosion by stellar dust.

The Voyager Golden Record, a much more complex and detailed message using (then) state-of-the-art media, was attached to the Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977...

...The original idea, that the Pioneer spacecraft should carry a message from mankind, was first mentioned by Eric Burgess when he visited the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California during the Mariner 9 mission. Together with Richard Hoagland, he approached Dr. Carl Sagan, who had lectured about communication with extraterrestrial intelligences at a conference in Crimea.

Dr. Sagan was enthusiastic about the idea of sending a message with the Pioneer spacecraft. NASA agreed to the plan and gave him three weeks to prepare a message. Together with Dr. Frank Drake he designed the plaque, and the artwork was prepared by Sagan's then wife Linda Salzman Sagan.

The first plaque was launched with Pioneer 10 on March 2, 1972, and the second followed with Pioneer 11 on April 5, 1973. Both spacecraft left the solar system in the 1980s.

The article doesn't mention whether Carl Sagan later expressed regret for the decision to send a "roadmap" to our solar system into the cosmos, but, then again, how much should one expect from a Wiki source?

There will ALWAYS be "fear based" people who will warn and shake their finger, pointing to the flat horizon, warning of the end of the world and creating a path that leads the monsters to our front door. Some of the responses in this very post attest to it. And it's nothing new, they have done it for centuries. If you are one of those people, you will always be one. The fear is in control and it can't be quelled. If you are not, if you are one of the explorers eager to take part in the growth of humanity, then you will forge ahead like those before you, the frightened ones won't stop you. But know that the others are riding along, cowering behind you, but with eyes wide with curiosity peeking over your shoulder with wonder, because in the end, they are the same as you, human.

Okay, I'm no scientist, ergo these guys are probably a lot smarter than me. But how would we ever know their goals, capabilities or intent without communicating with them?

And how long was Mr. Billingham involved with this project before he got the revelation that, "Hey, wait. What if they're BAD?"

Right. Any spacefaring species would be at the top of the food chain from wherever they hail from. I've never been comfortable about broadcasting our whereabouts such as with the Voyager missions. Anyway, I think it's prudent to practice extreme restraint when considering communicating with extraterrestrials. And lately I've been have second thoughts about disclosure. I know I'm going to get hammered for this, but I'm not entirely sure that full disclosure would be of benefit to mankind, especially given the wacky and irresponsible world we live in today. Does the human race really need to know that it is no longer at the top of the food chain and center of the universe? Our modern technology is at best about 300 years old. That's nothing compared to the possibility of encountering beings who are technologically advanced thousands, millions, or billions of years beyond us. In the spirit of Carl Sagan, a sufficiently advanced may have outgrown its need for violence and hostility. Still that doesn't mean they would wipe out all of humanity if given a good reason. Knowing that we are no longer at the top of the food chain would at best be a catalyst for more anxiety and fear being injected into the consciousness of our society. I'm pretty sure that we don't need more of that these days.

I think the odds are better than 50/50 that the aliens we contact, if any, will be hostile, at least at first...

My reasoning is as follows, the alien race is more than likely at the top of the food chain, in all likelihood a predator/hunter. That implies a certain mindset, a genetic principle to hunt. When two alpha's meet in the animal world conflict is inevitable. The same, it would seem to me, will hold true when two alpha species meet. Hopefully I'm wrong, it just seems logical to me.

Not that it matters, mankind is naturally curious, and a wanderer, and we've taken our first halting steps towards the rest of the Universe. There's gonna be unfreindly types out there, and freindly ones, too. I just think the unfreindly ones will be more common. Nothing says that they won't become freinds, but at least at first there is going to be alot of teeth baring and growling...

I am very inclined to think also that any advance civilazation in order to acquire the level of technology they would have to overcome the violence and hostility in their earlier stages or never had to live it in the first place.

May be violence and war its just a trait of our race, many of our technological advances have come through war, which later found their way to commercial use.

That is most assuredly not the case...

A civilization advances most rapidly when in conflict. Neccessity being the "mother of invention" and all that...

Kinder and gentler ain't neccessarily the way it's going to be, IMHO. Frankly, I hope I'm wrong, 'cause there's always someone bigger, stronger, tougher.

But I think at some point a type 3 or 4 civilization would have to come to understand than violence and war is just not the way. That type of civilization would have found a way to take care of their needs other than go out of their way to obliterate any othe civilization to get what they need.

Here we fight because of religion, oil and land. The last 2 things I don't think an advance civilization would have any problem acquiring.

That's just my opinion though.

Once again Scientists in (their field) of knowing trying to articulate or think (for you) the consensus, that man should be fearfull because its unknown.

If those Scientists were to take the same basis that made them arrive to (their) conclusion; they would be living on a rock all by themselves, with god only to pray to. lol.

When fear subsides they will be free to roam the Inner Halls of knowing.

I don't beleive Aliens are saints or whatnot, but then again, why would Aliens travel hundreds or even thousands of light years to kill humans? It's rediculous.

Maybe they do not travel lightyears and could be inter-dimentional and need this dimention to reach a higher plane. We could actually be trapped in this existance by them and not know.

But also like with black magic and channelling with other beings it is not exactly wise to be doing so, it never turns out good. Who says Aliens live on plantes? They could be space living creatures and can detect frequencies as a way of exploring, so what do we do? Say hi.

But when man explored America the Indians become ill with deseases, they might not have seen monsters but I bet some Sharks were around along the way.

Remember I told you ALL from the beginning that this 'SILENT WAR' is being faught right know, (belief system verses knowing) Ego vs. Love

Ignorance over knowing.

They are going to use the 'Common Consensus' as their tool for overiding your very Knowing. By planting seeds into your heads, then with enough repitition (Their thoughts) are now (your own). Like a closed box they know humans are prone to conditioned enviroment based upon the repitition, or routine, that comfort zone of the mind.

How you strike back at them are the same seeds that (they) try to promote using the people they know to influence you.

If they can get ONE ringer they think they got us all. DON'T LET OTHERS THINK FOR YOU, IT HINDERS YOUR LEARNING.

Since I was a kid in 62 this twilight zone episode was mind twisting as to whether there were hungry aliens looking to pickup a few good meals on earth for exchange of technology. I wonder if thats the deal our governments have today for technology.

On the one hand we have the 'Fear Mongers' wanting to think for us, and on the other hand we have the "Love Brigade" wanting to do the same thing. The 'Love Brigade' swears that the 'Fear Mongers just want to control us with a "False Flag", and keep us from being happy and spiritual. The 'Fear Mongers' are sure that the 'Love Brigade' is just trying to assure that we'll have our guard down when we're attacked, and may actually themselves have already turned to The Dark Side.

Really folks. Like most things in life, it's not either side here that is 100% on the money, IMO. Let's go do what humans do, explore. But let's be realistic enough to admit that any civilization we might happen to encounter, has the potential to be good, bad, or a little of both. We can't afford to be afraid of the dark, nor should we be walking into it with our eyes closed.

The only thing that is fearfull is not knowing from the human condition,
but once you know how a society of beings function you would know they work for the 'Source' and are connected to higher truths like we are. They would reflect back at us the very soul elements that make us Human. All those (other races) out there are to promote your thinking. But once the Gathering of Truth happens you will see they are very much in the same boat we are with only their guidance system (within) to help them unfold the Univereses at large.

A lot of humans are out there as 'Space Beings' now, They graduated to it.

Wouldn't you find comfort in knowing that is what you get to do promote yourself to a higher Being. A new body for a different consciousness. They are evolved souls. That is what is we are becoming NOW the upgrade.

Yeah, they could be. But then again, they might not. Its 50/50, like everything in life, it either is or it isnt. Theres no inbetween. Now... should one side stop us from exploring? Hell no, keep it coming. Benevolence or malevolence - who cares!

That statement is false there are alway's in between's. How do i know this you ask ?

Well i whatched Donnie Darko and he showed this theory to be bogus when they tried to use the love and fear demonstration on him.

this film dont lie what more cna i say!

LOL

Great. Then all those super evolved humans can explain to the rest of the aliens, the ones that evolved on some other planet, that we normal Earth people believe in walking softly and carrying a big stick.

I think this might work out fine.

I agree that extraterrestrial beings may not only be dangerous, but all together NOT what we think. Man seems to think that ET will be beings in spaceships, when they could actually be creatures that LIVE in space.

Mankind sending signals out into space is the equivalent of a man jumping into the middle of the sea, then pounding the water to attract any creatures that may be lurking in the ocean's depths.

Our past beliefs that 'we are alone' has skewed our reasoning that there probably isn't anything out there.

The other question is, if there is something out there (and there is) and we do not like what we see, how do we tell it, "never mind, just checking, go away now."

A quick test to see who is really dangerous.

1. What creature has put other creatures in gas chambers?

A: Aliens
B: Humans

2. What creature has committed the most genocide on planet Earth?

A:Aliens
B: Humans

3. What creature has conquered the Earth and all that is in it?

A: Aliens
B: Humans

4. What creature values material things over life itself?

A: Aliens
B: Humans

If you answered B to all these Questions then you just found out Aliens have not cause all the misery and suffering on this planet.
