Here is the reuters article: Big quake hits Indonesia's Sumatra region

Snippet:
The USGS initially said on its Web site there was quake measuring 8.0, and then a short time later said there was a quake measuring 7.9 at slightly different location. It was unclear if there were two quakes.

Sorry didn't know this was up already.

Last report was short but saying buildings down. Let's all say a little prayer that they are okay.

Tsunami watch or warning is now in place.

Reports are confusing at the amount.

The quake has the potential to cause a Tsunami

CNN just quoted this lastest eye witness report;

(if true, its chilling)

people are running out of their homes, screaming and running in every direction

the report is said to be coming from near the coast.

BBC news literally just said that the quake was upgraded to an 8.2.....

what does that mean upgraded??? that was the word they used.

I hope this doesn't turn out to be really bad.

They say they picked up a two foot Tsunami but they don't know if this is how it is going to be or if this is just building into a larger one.

It can take up to weeks to get the final magnitude and location of a quake. For instance, the Boxing Day quake was listed as 8.9 and 9.2 between the U.S. and the Euro-seismic agencies.

Upgraded just means they think they thumbed it wrong the first pass.

Unlikely to have had anything to do with it. It was massive for a conventional weapon, but hardly a quake-triggering boom.

The tsunami warning has been issued for as far north as Iran and Pakistan???

o_O

I don't think so.

oh right, thanks for clearing that up for me guys, guess I was under the impression that when a quake is detected and recorded, the strength was known beyond doubt.

CNN just reported that its now apparent that a tsunami would have hit by now if it was going to. very good news indeed. also, some buildings have collapsed in south-west sumatra, no reports of casualties as yet though...

business acquaintance in Singapore was having dinner when they felt it. He said they were told to go back to their hotel and stay put.

oh and btw anyone remember how long after the initial quake did it take for the tsunami to start hitting land in 04?
