Hi All,

I just went to the USGS site to get more info and found this map that shows the location of the quake.

It is located pretty close to land, which has me worried that the people wont have enough time to get to safety if or when the tsunami hits. I am trying to track down more information right now.

Probably an aftershock of magnitude 7, BIG quakes will give big aftershocks.

Hi All,

Here is a link to CNN's
report on the quake. There seemed to be some confusion there as to whether or not there had been one or two quakes reported. The USGS spokesman said they only recorded one quake, but the Alaskan and Pacific tsunami centers reported there were two quakes.

I am still searching for more info.

I hope that everyone there will have enough time to get away, or even better, there isn't a tsunami.

No-one wants another Boxing Day event.

Yeah,

CNN/BBC have reported two quakes, both extremely large.

The whole Indian-Ocean is on alert.

They've changed it back to just one quake now. I don't think anyone knows for sure yet.

That map doesn't look right. Padang and Palembang is on Sumatera island, not Java island where Jakarta is.

Here's a report from a Chinese daily:

Earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia

10:33, September 11, 2007

An earthquake with magnitude of 5. 7 rocked eastern part of Indonesia on Tuesday, no report of casualty or damages, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake struck at 08:56 Jakarta time (0156GMT) with epicenter at 447 kilometers northeast Ternate of North Maluku province and at 87 kilometers under seabed, an official of the agency said.

Magnitude 5.7? That's much lower than what was reported in American news...

Edit: It seems the Chinese daily was reporting a foreshock.

Reuters and AP both reported a strong quake less than an hour back near Sumatera. Odd, I didn't feel a thing.

it's night time there isn't it? That might make evacuations difficult for many
I really hope there isn't a tsunami with these earthquakes. I'm sure there will be several aftershocks too. Hoping for the best in the situation is all we can do. I remember the boxing day tsunami, it started it out as a small event and as the hours went on, so did the severity of the situation.
